UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
is there any way around this extremely stupid policy?
We must buy these cards that give no benefit or break for food. Might as well be paying by credit card or cash, but the school has guaranteed that you must spend X dollars (forgot what it is, but its significant) at their cafeterias. SO GODDAMNED STUPID |
Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
You're new to college, aren't you? At my school, the minimum meal plan is 14 meals a week, and on average, my dorm used ~7 meals per person a week. No option to reduce this, and when it was brought up in the student government, the food service said they couldn't afford to allow a smaller meal plan because they couldn't pay for the food if everyone actually used close to what they paid for. It's all a scam.

Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
There was an issue with this at my school, but I graduated before it was resolved. I can't remember the exact details, but it boiled down to a use it or lose it policy with the meal plans, except there was apparently something in some bylaws somewhere about how the money from the mealplans was to be kept in a trust for a certain period of time, and there was a process students could go through to get their excess back. The rub being no student was ever told of this process, and was just told they couldn't get it back. I'm sure it worked out adverse to justice, and they eliminated those bylaws.

Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
Should have moved off campus if you are not a freshman.
|
Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
As freshman, we have one plan. It includes 3 meals/day, 7 days/week.
|
Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
my college has all freshman on the "unlimited plan." basically, whenever you ever eat off campus, you are paying for two meals. such a joke.
|
Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
At my college you can go and lower your meal plan and get the cash difference. 1 meal equals $6 or so of food, but when refunded you get $9 for each meal.
Free $3. |
Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
Im a UCSD third year living off campus.
I think u get 1800 bucks for the whole year (unless they just changed it) Learn to ration ur meal points (unless u plan on buying more) otherwise you will end up like i did in the first year. I ran out of meal points by the end of second quarter and ate PBandJ for the last 3 weeks of school. The best food overall is at OVT. ERC has good sushi. Muir has good sandwiches. Revelle sucks for pretty much everything (sorry if u go there) Warren has good sandwiches 6th is in the boonies |
Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
In addition to the meal plan being dumb, my cousin told me that when he was there (7 years ago), if you don't use up all your meal points theres only 1 place you can use them at the end of the quarter to buy overpriced random stuff like lava lamps.
Is this still true vq? and do you know anything about food at Marshall? Oh one more thing...do they allow George Foreman grills in the dorms? I assume they would but my Dad said they might not for some reason. I'm planning on getting the one from Amazon that El D mentioned in another thread if that matters. |

[/ QUOTE ] Ur cousin is correct, extra meal points can be used to be crap that u dont need. Ocean View Terrace (OVT) is the Marshall dining center. Each college has its own. I think it has the best food out of all the colleges and it is also opened the latest which is reallllllllly nice when everyone is just up late [censored] around. If u want the dinner special get there before 8pm, becuase it will run out. Breakfast burritos (u will get tired of them but they are good for a while) sttart at 9pm. You will hate OVT by ur second year. My roomate first year had a george foreman grill and it was cool. If need be just hide it. Dont bother buying silverware and plates. Just take them home from the dining halls. Bring sandals for the showers unless ur in the apartments, in which case those are newer and cleaner. The girls are generally ugly. |
Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
Mean plans are the biggest scams ever. The solution is to go off meal plan as soon as you're allowed.

Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
HAHAHAHA, I went to UCSD...10 years ago?
DOn't worry...your meal points are redeemable for stupid stuff at that warren place...god i forget whats its called. anyways, at warren there's a place tahts like open till 2am and they offer a lot of stuff for your remaining meal points. |
Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
Damn, all of you guys are screwed. I get unlimited eating from 7:30-7:30 every day and 10:30-11:30 every night. The only restriction is that I can't go in more than 14 times a day.
All covered by scholarship [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] |

And yeah, I heard george foreman grills are allowed and a great idea. I def. plan to buddy up with someone with a rice cooker, george foreman grill, etc. etc. |
Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
Our min is like 400 for the year for students living off campus, 3000 for freshman, and 2600 for others living on campus (something in that area). I don't get the point of it, other than for the university to make more money. *shrugs*

meal plans suck everywhere

Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
They are needed so those coddled mama's boys don't get scurvy when they leave home. It's a sad sight, I've seen it happen.
|
Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
UCSD, huh? pretty hot girls there. I'll take a couple meals of your hands per week if you'd like.
|
Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
Not even, compared to SDSU, UCLA, or USC.
|
Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
Sounds like you might need to 'develop' a food allergy or come up with some off the wall dietary requirement.

Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
also whatever you do, don't waste your college days playing poker. i know many people that did or came close to it. you wont regret getting out and meeting people, so get off the cpu the first few weeks of school.

Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
Our University Cafeteria let us order pizzas for 'take-out' using our meal plan. At the end of the semester we'd just use up our remaining meals ordering pizzas and gave them to the homeless peeps downtown.

Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
Meals plans are the biggest rip-off of college, maybe second after book prices at the official University bookstore.
My freshman year me and a friend figured out we could buy a supersize double quarter pounder w/ cheese meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner, monday-sunday and still be paying less than we were charged for our meal plan. |
Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
The whole point of the UCSD meal card is not to force you to buy UCSD money and spend it at UCSD. Its for parents that are paying for their children's school and food. This way the parents charge up their kid's card, and that kid has to use it on food. You know, instead of drugs, beer, crack, hookers, poker, etc.

Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
i work for a major university dining hall. i do much of the financial stuff. lemme do a little breakdown here. this is all supposed to be confidential.
students are required to purchase at least 14 meals a week.(ive had people call and complain that this is either FAR TOO MUCH[understandable imo] or FAR TOO LITTLE[which i could not believe]) this averages to 2 meals per day or 3 meals per weekday. i believe the average cost per meal in the plans is somewhere around $6.40. looking at financial sheets, the food cost per patron served is $2.44. i suppose the other costs are administrative costs. i think we turned a very very small profit this year, but there are a ton of other costs, equipment, labor, etc. i imagine the numbers arent too far off. and to make meals for people it seems entirely necessary to have them pay beforehand so that you may properly prepare to make the correct amount of meals. rj |

I would much prefer a private group do it, and they can worry about budgets etc. and I'm sure provide an affordable, and quality-effective service. If Uni food wasn't so [censored] and unhealthy I would have no problem with the system at all... as it is, it seems they just need competition and then a good alternative - where I can pay who I want to for what I want at the price I want - will emerge. Its cool if they want to have a possible meal plan for the mommas boys and other assorted people that want/need it but it sucks for everyone else, which I think is the majority. |

Most restaurants of any kind spend more money on labor, overhead, etc. than they do on the actual food. That's part of why portion sizes are so huge at restaurants (doesn't cost them much more, but you feel like you're getting a better value) and why McDonalds can let you super size for 50c or whatever. Obv the corollary is that you can save a lot of money cooking food yourself instead of going out and paying someone to cook it for you. |
Re: UCSD meal plan: [censored] you
I heard if we eat what we're supposed to eat - 3 meals a day - we run out as early as winter.
