Greatest Drummer Eva!

Ok, listening to Lateralus at volumes that liquified my spleen today hit home that Danny Carey is a pretty awesome drummer by anyone's standards. Has there ever been a better rock drummer? The only guy that I can think of that I like better is Keith Moon, but that's because he was just freaking awesome in every way.
Anyone else? Who's overrated? Who's underrated?

uh - a guy by the name of Neil Peart perhaps??????

He's in a little band called Rush.

He probably blows away any drummer on the face of the Earth.

I happen to think Jon Theodore of The Mars Volta is pretty sick. Guy is a machine.

I second this for precision, complexity. John Bonham for more of a raw, thundering, soul-stirring sound. I mean, c'mon...The Hammer of the Gods!!

Re: Greatest Drummer Eva!

Carey is a fantastic drummer. But there are plenty of drummers who are as talented as he is. Especially in the metal genre, where today's drummers have absolutely incredible double bass drum speed. If you want examples, for speed try Fear Factory. For odd time signatures, try Meshuggah. As good as Carey is, those guys are insane.

Keith Moon was tremendously overrated. He was a great character and he was wild on the drums, but he wasn't particularly innovative or fast.

And for those who say Peart, he was a great drummer in his times. But today's young drummers can do things that Peart could never dream of doing (not that they're as innovative or influential as Peart was).

Too bad he's dead and the band broke up - but believe it or not Pete DeFreitas from Echo and the Bunnymen was amazing - perhaps one of the best drummers from the alt rock genre.

check that - the band is still around but.........

I think it's fairly easy to argue that any answer other than Niel Peart is incorrect.

And if you think Neal Peart is incorrect, and you say anyone other than John Bonham, you will have a difficult case to make.

Had the OP not specified rock drummers, I believe the correct answer would be Gene Krupa, seen here in a drum-off vs. Hamilton & Hamilton.

Have you even heard metal made in the last decade? Dozens of metal drummer blow both those guys out of the water.

It'd be like saying Jesse Owens is the greatest sprinter of all-time. He was great in his time, but today's sprinters can get his times easily.

Same with Bonham and Peart.

Re: Greatest Drummer Eva!

I've got a friend who majored in percussion and he told me that the drummer from Fear Factory uses a timer (I forget the exact jargon) so that for each pedal he presses, two sounds are created. Basically, he's creating a double bass drum sound while only having to use one pedal.

Sorry, I guess it was not obvious what I believe makes a drummer "great"; it's not all technical skill.

I had never heard that story. Judge for yourself:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=zL-Sbpw0j...mond%20herrera

He does use "triggers" though. Instead of recording the actual bass drum sound, his bass drum tells an electronic drummer to make a bass drum sound. Wiki says he does that because a natural bass drum sound would be too muddy.

when I opened this thread I didn't really expect to see Elvin Jones or Art Blakey on the list. Its the same thing whenever guitarist threads like this get made and once you say john mclaughlin the conversation should always be over, except that few people have listened to him to know about his pwnage, same goes for the kit

As far as rock drummers go, few people know that Phil Collins is a freaking vat-grown drumming automaton. This is him in a drum war with Chester Thompson.

in general I would never put a big band drummer in the top ten for jazz. The nature of a Big Band vs a Small Combo group helps hide a weaker drummer in a big band where he'd get exposed big time in a combo

And for those who've never heard Meshuggah, here's a really crappy music video they did: http://youtube.com/watch?v=z5A0q63_g...arch=meshuggah

Don't watch it (it's just the band air drumming and air guitaring), just listen to the drums in it.

Early Genesis (especially the Peter Gabriel-led stuff) is great. Slight hijack, apologies.
