Speeding ticket
My finace got a speeding ticket in washington state. In the "defendant's signature" aknowledging that she "got the ticket but not admitting guilt" the cop never made her sign it....is this enough to get her off?
Can she just ignore it and then say...hey I never signed getting it? |
Re: Speeding ticket
There's got to be a better legal forum somewhere online where you can post about your personal problems...

Re: Speeding ticket
Man it is a speeding ticket not a multimillion dollar law suit. Just pay it. Your fiance was probably speeding anyway.
Talk about getting worked up and spending a lot of time on what, $150!? |

[/ QUOTE ] In the state where I live, there is a line where the defendant is supposed to sign the ticket, but if there is no legal requirement to sign the ticket. It won't go away just because she didn't sign it. In fact, if she just "ignores it," there is a good chance her license will be suspended. That is much worse than a simple speeding ticket. You might want to try contacting the prosecutor's office. They might be willing to give you some sort of diversion agreement where she pays some money and the conviction won't go on her record. |

Rika,
Pay the ticket and play poker for like an extra 20 minutes one night to pay it off. |

Re: Speeding ticket
Thanks Leonid and mpslg that advice helped a LOT.
As far as everyone asking why I just don't pay, it's the points on the license we can't afford, not the money. I've already lost my license once (had a FZR 600...so standard) and my fiance is well on her way (has to drive 2 hours a day on the freeway...so standard again) I know we're young and stupid, and we both just don't care about a $122 ticket. The insurance doesn't even bother us, it's the fact we're both getting close to losing our licenses (well, me for the 2nd time) |
Re: Speeding ticket
You both need to learn a lesson, which you obviously haven't so far. Being young is no excuse for stupidity or breaking the law. It's probably good you both have a heavy foot because it sounds like you'll need it to pedal your bicyles around when you loose your licenses.
I don't speed and I have no sympathy for those who do and whine when they get caught. Sorry. |

[ QUOTE ] I don't speed and I have no sympathy for those who do and whine when they get caught. Sorry. [/ QUOTE ] You seriously go exactly the speed limit or under? [/ QUOTE ] Yes. Seriously. If the speed limit is 70, my cruise is set at 69 or 70 mph, not one mph over. My question is simply, "why speed"? For me, getting somewhere 5 minutes early is not worth the cost of the ticket and the increased cost on my insurance. Another thing that has always amazed me about following the speed limit, is how many people are so appalled by it and so willing to bash you for it. I can't think of any other law that people are so happy to admit they break and are almost aghast that others don't. What do you gain by me speeding? Ridiculous. The OP and his girlfriend are breaking the law. They took the risks, now they are suffering the consequences. |
Re: Speeding ticket
I speed a lot, but usually because I'm running late to things (terrible I know). I do like going the speed limit though because it saves on gas. If it's like 3 am and I'm in a driving mood I'll go like 60.

I've never so much as seen someone pulled over on that stretch in 2 years. So is it worth it? For me, yes. Re: Speeding ticket
doubtful. At best, I think she could legally not show up in court, and they would have to come and subpoena (or whatever it is) you in person and have you sign something then. not worth it at all to mess around, pay it up or get a lawyer.
Lots of people speed. Most of them don't get many tickets. you are getting lots of tickets. therefore you are driving faster than everyone else. slow down. comprende? |
Re: Speeding ticket
I speed because it saves me time. I estimate that I drive about 50 miles a day on average (when I start my new job in the fall it will be more). Many of those miles are on roads with a 25 mph speed limit. If I drive 35-40mph on those roads it saves me 30 minutes each day. That is a lot of hours in the year.
I should note, that I also speed because I believe it is safe. When I was younger I would go 30+ over the limit, which was very dangerous. Now, on most roads and highways my personal speed limit is governed by 3 things: 1: What I believe is a safe maximum speed (and I never exceed this.) For example, on many sections of the Saw Mill Parkway in NY exceeding the speedlimit by more than 10mph and sometimes 5mph is dangerous. On RT 80 in central PA you can safely exceed the speed limit by much more 2: What type of speeding violation can carry a very harsh penalty. Usually this is 15mph over the limit in most states. I don't know all the specific driving laws of states, so I always try to keep myself 14mph over the limit or under, except when all traffic is moving 15+ over. and 3: What is a speeding violation that cops will routinely pull me over for? This is usually around 15+ over the limit, although recently I cop wrote me a ticket for going 10 over the limit in a 65mph zone at 2am with no traffic arround. He claimed I was going 15mph over and I disagreed, so he lowered the violation but still wrote me a ticket. Since then I've tempered my speeding a little more and now go about 12 mph over the limit on average. In 7 years of driving I have only received 1 ticket. It carried a $200 penaltly. I have saved my self over 1000hrs of time compared to just driving the speed limit. It's hard to imagine that I am doing something significantly wrong when dozens of times I have been going 10-15mph over the limit only to zoom by a hidden cop and not get pulled over. One of the reasons why I was so aghast at you is that many times the person going exactly the speed limit is sitting in the passing lane on a highway. This really makes me upset and only creates dangerous situations as desperate motorists pass him/her on the right. Another reason is that I assumed that on a poker message board, where people are much less risk adverse than average, everyone would exceed the speed limit (for the reasons I stated above). |

What would the world be like if everyone decided to pick and choose which laws they felt were "reasonable" and worth obeying? [/ QUOTE ] It's not a matter of random picking. Some laws are moronic or immoral because of the facts. Some aren't. If everyone followed the latter and ignored the former the world would be a much better place. You seem to think all laws should be obeyed no matter their nature. That is clearly wrong. [ QUOTE ] Sorry, I'm not arguing to defend my position of actually obeying the law. Re: Speeding ticket

So are you arguing it is safer to set no limits than impose arbitary ones on citizens of a state? [/ QUOTE ] I don't believe that laws should be made for the sole purpose of keeping people safe. I have the right to do unsafe things. Until the time that I infringe on someone else’s right to drive down the road in relative safety, the state should take no part. If a cop sees someone driving in a way that any reasonable person would conclude is dangerous to others then they should be stopped and the punishment should be more severe then it is for a speeding. If you cause an accident because of your recklessness, you should go to jail. If you hurt someone, you should go to jail for a long time. Will this system be safer? Probably not, but I'd rather be free then safe. |

Leader, I only respond and debate with people who prove that they are capable of debating on a rational adult skill level. I spent almost 5 years on a political debate msg. board as one of the top posters, so I've been thru my fair share of arguments. I took debate in high school and understand how it works. When you realize you are debating an irrational and illogical person you don't waste your time. I'm a fairly quick learner.
