What to do in NYC?

I'm flying to NYC (hopefully the plane will land to Newark as planned) in Saturday. I'll stay a week and don't have much plans in advance.

I'm not interested going to regular tourist traps.

I'm into rock/metal and I'm going to see Mahavatar and Body Count at the Knitting Factory.

Don't have other plans, but might go to Continental or CBGB if there's something interesting.

Any other similar clubs worth checking out?

I like stand up, so I'll probably go to couple of clubs. I'm big Bill Hicks fan and hate Seinfeld type of "comedy".

I only know few bigger names so are there any newer names that I should check out?

I've been in Metropolitan museum but might go again.

Not a big sports fan, so not thanks for a game.

Bison steak(s) is a must, what are better places to have one?

Any suggestions?

NP: Mahavatar - Deep Cobble

Since you are landing in Newark I would stay in Jersey for a couple days and assimilate the culture.

Culture like this?

I actually own a Devils jersey.

It's not accurate yet, but I hope they'll get Miroslav S. in their roster and Bettman gives him a special permission to use a 3 digit number.

Comedy Cellar is a good comedy club in the village, Dave Attel performs there regularly. Nicer than Carolines IMO.

Not really my scene, but my dad is into it so I know a little about these places. From what I've heard CBGB is hardly worth going to anymore for actual hard rock music. Continental is apparently still pretty good. I think i heard it's closing soon, I'm not positive though. I like Knitting Factory.

Someone else mentioned it but I'll second Comedy Cellar.

Probably, but I'm not flying over Atlantic for a bison steak. It's just a bonus as they aren't common in Finland.

I won't go to CBGB unless there's at least one interesting band.

Just noticed that Dillinger Escape Plan and God Forbid are at the Bowery Ballroom 2nd of August, so I'll go there if I get the tickets.

Thanks, I'll check that one out.

I'll probably skip pizzas and burgers, but I'm from Finland so I'll get drunk everywhere I go.

Only place I've seen a bison steak in NYC is at Brasserie Julien on the Upper East Side. The beef prime rib was better. And you can get better prime rib at many other steakhouses in NYC. So I'd only go there if you absolutely must have bison. If you're really into exotic meats, also try the kangaroo at Public in Nolita.

For hard rock you should also check out Don Hill's.

Public is not too expensive. Probably around $75-100/head dinner and drinks. Kangaroo meat is very good. It's beefy, with a slightly gamey taste. Very tasty. I haven't gone in a while, but I'd definitely go again.

I have no idea what that means. All I know is OMFG I WANT TO EAT A KANGEROO.

No one owns a kangeroo.

I suggest going to the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater (improv comedy) on Sunday. Assssscat 3000 is an awesome show. UCB Theater home

Evan: I had kangaroo in Australia. It tasted like a leaner variety of beef, so it's generally cooked less. I loved it, it went great in stir-fries.

If you are in NY, have a pizza. I know you may think why did I come all this way to have pizza, but in NY or Chicago, it's worth it.

just down the road on the other side from CBGBs is the Bowery Poetry room. Go there on a monday night to see Bingo Gazingo and open mic comedy/poets/music and all.

I think the last time I was in NYC I had a bison steak somewhere on the Upper West Side. It was five years ago though.

Might give kangaroo a shot.

Yeah, I'll probably check out Don Hill's and also Duff's Brooklyn.

Those improvisation evenings sound good too.

Thanks for all replies. I'm still open for more suggestions.

Last time I had great time in some big arcade. Especially playing the moving chair version of my C-64 favourite Beach Head was a blast.
