Anyone got any suggestions for dealing with eyestrain?

I get really bad eyestrain after playing for awhile. I have two LCD screens that I play on. I've tried taking playing with the lights on and off as well takeing break but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions would be wonderful.

If you're really good, take longer breaks. If you're really bad, don't worry, it'll go away if you keep playing.

you can try a blacklight. also, be sure to play with the lights on. playing with the lights off for an extended period of time is the rough equivalent of simply staring into a lightbulb. not good for the eyes.

Tell your optometrist. You don't have one because, "My eyes are perfect!"?

Guess what? They aren't. Even if you just have a pair of glasses for staring at the screen for 8+ hours and never wear them outside of that you'll probably find relief.

I know this because not only am I nearsighted, my eyes don't focus correctly. I'm told that most peoples eyes slightly cross when at rest but mine would like to be slightly the other way. "Google-eyed", I guess. This caused me no end of trouble staring at monitors until an optometrist tested for it and corrected my lenses. Now I'm good for 15+ hours.

so what would be the effects of staring at a monitor for 4-5 hours 4-5 days a week?

When my eyes start to hurt I just close em for a few hours and play by feel.

with the lights off? i suspect if your eyes aren't used to it you might get a headache. but i really don't know much about that.

Re: Anyone got any suggestions for dealing with eyestrain?

the simple solution is to go to specsavers (or an obvious equivalent )

i had the same problem bout 6/7 months ago and i was prescribed glasses to be used only when im at my computer.....apart from getting strained eyes at computer, my eyes are perfect.

every other solution will be short term and any kinda eye strain at all should be checked out now before it gets too bad and you need to wear glasses constantly.

This was my first post and I was really surprised by how many people posted; so thank you all. I’ve been playing for about a week now since looking at all the advice I got and it helped substantially. I still get eyestrain every once in a while but it is much better now and here are some things I did that really helped. First, I’ve playing with the lights on. Next, I have a 20 inch and a 17 inch NEC LCD and they are really bright, I turned the brightness all the way down and the difference was amazing. Usually I play 4-5 tables but when only playing 2 or 3 I turn the resolution way up on my 20 inch and it’s a lot easier to see, especially with all my ace hud stats. Lastly I take more short breaks and that also helps a lot. Two days I played 12 hours with a few short breaks in between and I was fine. Thanks again.

You can get pin hole glasses that are supposed to be good for eye strain. I havent used them extensively myself but a friend of mine uses them

anything short of getting glasses for playing is nothing more than putting the problem on the long finger.......you will eventually have to get glasses and when you do, they will have to be a stronger prescription due to continuous eyestrain.

eyestrain is your body telling you there is a problem.....listen to yourself

also make sure you look away from the monitor frequently and focus your eyes on something in the distance.

I am actually getting the same problem. Whenever I sit in front of the monitor doing some work and after that playing too long (could be abt 6+ hours per day), I start rubbing my eyes and feeling kinda strange. If you add that most of my friends live in a different city, so we chat via MSN all the time...
I tried Visin, but as far as I understand, it´s not good to be using it all the time. Guess I need to find some other way out.

This is key. Staring at anything that is a constant distance away is somewhat like holding a 5# weight in one position for hours. Your eyes need to focus and refocus to stay loose. Google 'pencil push-ups'. They are an awesome exercise for the eyes and fixed my problems within a week. Good luck.
