I never understood this, why is this funny, why are any skits on Chapelles show funny? Just because they deal with urban and pop culture doesn’t make it remotely funny ): It was about as funny as mad TV was at its peak.

The wayne brady thing is funny because it's wayne brady. Wouldn't work with some random guy. It's because Wayne Brady is supposed to be wholesome, family friendly.

The only other guy it might have worked just as well with would have been Al Roker.... other than those two, though, I can't think of anyone else.

Bryant Gumbel is a good one... Will Smith and Chris Tucker have enough of a 'hip' factor where it wouldn't be nearly as funny.

Seriously, it is topical humour, so some might be over or to the side of some heads, but it is much more cleverly done than the average IMO. Wayne Brady had a daytime talk show! He was turned into the archetype of friendly non-offensive black entertainers. Seeing this juxtaposition in the skit was priceless, because it was totally believable. You really believe Wayne is gonna choke a bitch. I was a bit scared of him.
Plus, this was right after Wayne had his show cancelled despite good ratings, and Dave renamed his show Wayne Brady's show for the episode. He even remade the opening credits and song. It was a multi-level concept piece.
