Electric Shaver - As good as razor? Reccomendations?

1. Do you believe an electric shaver can provide a shave practically as good as a conventional razor?

2. What would be the best to buy?

I have always used this cheap electric Norelco and am becoming dissatisfied. This is probably in part because I never cleaned it properly.

I prefer normal razors, electrics never seem to get the job done for me. I think the small amount of speed added by the electric are greatly outweighed by the quality of the shave you get with a blade.

I am with those that go with blade for life. The electric doesn't cut nearly close enough, needs replacement blades too often, and if you skip the replacement blades, literally starts to pull the whiskers out of your skin. OUCH!

I have one of those Norelcos and like it. But I can't compare it to a blade, because I've never shaved with a blade. (Now that I read that, it seems pretty sad -- I should try at least once.)

I'm in the middle of an electric razor experiment, using the Panasonic Vortex. After about a month, it is almost as close as a blade, and takes a little less time. The self-cleaning base is a nice feature too. I wouldn't get one without it. My beard is a pain in the ass, especially on my neck, where everything grows in different directions. This is where the electric fails, it just doesn't get everything there, even with a few passes.

I got the Norelco 8865XL when I started work this summer, and it works well, but it isn't as close as a blade. If I'm going out on a date or similar I'll actually take the time to shave. Works great when I don't want to spend the time/pain on shaving correctly. It doesn't bother my sensitive skin. (Regular shaving can.)

I had an electric shaver and i'm glad it got smashed in my backpack on an airplane. Its good for doing a really quick lazy shave, but if you actualy want to be clean shaven they are pretty terrible.

I agree in general, but if you haven't tried them in awhile, the newer ones are much better than they were 10 years ago. I keep one handy for emergency shaves. I've tried a few over the years. THIS is the one I currently have and it's the best I've used.

I use a cheap electric shaver to get the rough stuff off, then do a normal shave.

Definitely the slowest option, but I find it to be the most comfortable and cleanest shave.

I can't recommend this enough. It works better before or after, not in the shower. The trick is threefold:

1. Don't press hard; just touch it against your skin.
2. Use only enough lotion so that it glides smoothly, more is not better.
3. For problem areas (neck) hold it upside down.

I will never go back do disposables!

I've used electrics for 15+ years. Braun is the best.

Electric is great. Faster, easier, and cleaner.

My uncle recommended this razor to me. I am ordering it off amazon today. I shave my head so I need something that is quicker that a regular razor. I have tried this and was very happy with the results.

I use the Braun Activator. It is awesome. I hightly recommend it.

The shave is close enough that your skin is completely smooth. Except the neck area can be troublesome. But for the chin/face, it's much faster and just as smooth as a blade. Plus you don't have to bother with shaving cream.

I used to have one of the low end Norelco shavers and my new one is much, much better. But I've heard good things about the high end Norelco shavers as well.

I have a very thin beard, so I only clean the thing every couple days. A bottle of the cleaning solution ($5) lasts me 2-3 months. Definitely get an electric that self-cleans, well worth the extra money.

I've tried various razors and electric shavers, but every since Gilette sent me a Mach 3 on my 18th birthday, that's been my workhorse. Doubt I'll ever switch.

Anyone who thinks that an electric can shave as close as a blade probably isn't really growing much facial hair yet.On an adult's face,it's just not possible.

I tried the Norelco and it was ok, but just didn't do it for me. I use a mach 3 in the shower w/ Purpose soap.

Re: Electric Shaver - As good as razor? Reccomendations?

I've used cheap disposable, good electric, and good disposable (mach 3)

Winner hands down is mach 3. Closest shave, and if you are adequately skilled it takes not much longer than electric.

If i want to keep a few mm, ie, i want a very non-close shave. Is it possible to set an electric razor to shave at different lengths? Or is it model dependant? If so, anyone know of a good one that will do this?

Forget the shaver. Just stick your face in here and let me take care of it.
