Is it rude to speak while dragging a pot?

Someone told me this last night, never heard it before. And I'm not talking "ha-ha" type [censored] either.

Re: Is it rude to speak while dragging a pot?

i would imagine saying something like "[censored] all you [censored]" would consitute as rude.. but i cant imagine the idea of just talking being rude.

Re: Is it rude to speak while dragging a pot?

Never heard this before. Ridiculous notion that saying anything at all would be considered rude.

Re: Is it rude to speak while dragging a pot?

It depends on what you say. I could see how an opponent might be offended if you say anything related to the hand, but if you are talking about something non-poker related, that should be fine.

Did the person tell you that anything other than absolute silence is rude? Or, did they tell you that what you said was rude?

Re: Is it rude to speak while dragging a pot?

Just that absolute silence is best. I might sometimes say smoething like "Ugh, I'd have lost more with your hand." or "Bad luck" or [censored] like that. Obviosuly when I know the guy hates me I won't say anything because I try to keep people from hating me/taking shots at me etc.

But I can't imagine dragging a pot and talking about the weather. That seems retarded.

Re: Is it rude to speak while dragging a pot?

I usually just say "Thanks [insert dealer's name]" as I toss him/her the tip.

If you just laid a nice beat on a WPT douche then I believe "Ship It!" is standard.

Re: Is it rude to speak while dragging a pot?

Some people who lose at anything get offended very easily. They are poor sportsmen, but even though that is their problem, I avoid aggravating them by not saying anything related to the hand or the win. Not even "tough break" or "you played that well", or "sorry for the suckout" etc. as some people get annoyed no matter what you say or with some, you can't tell what will bother them.

Re: Is it rude to speak while dragging a pot?

I don't say anything unless I am already in a conversation- I don't stop speaking just because I am dragging a pot. If it has been a quiet table, I don't say anything unless I am thanking the dealer or acknowledging their thank you for the toke.

Wongboy 07-20-2006 03:23 PM

Re: Is it rude to speak while dragging a pot?

I usually don't say anything related to the hand. Just announce my hand, table it, and if I win, thank the dealer while tossing them a tip.

There really is no need to say anything about the hand. If it was a decent sized pot, then I'm guessing your opponent doesn't feel like chatting about it. If anything, maybe compliment your opponents play by saying something like "nice job checking behind on the river. I was planning to check-raise". Of course, this is usually obvious and best left unsaid.

If you're looking to make the loss as easy as possible on you're opponent than saying nothing is definitely the best policy.

If somehow you deal to me tomorrow, I'll make sure to say just that. You're in charge of getting Steve to not throw me out.

Re: Is it rude to speak while dragging a pot?

It's not rude to speak while dragging a pot unless you say something rude. That seems pretty obvious but sometimes players need to be quiet and take the pot. No need to say something nasty. No need to say something nice.

I like saying 'sooo f'ing easy', 'I'm getting high tonight' or 'I love you tards for lining my pockets' when I'm dragging a pot.

It is, but fish are results oriented and I like them that way. Now that I think of it, this is probably the smartest thing I regularly say.

Re: Is it rude to speak while dragging a pot?

If people seem upset I generally stay quiet. If they discuss the hand at all, I will generally console them with some sort of BS empathy. Really your goal should be to keep the mood of a game light and friendly. Talking after a hand certainly isn't rude as long as what is said isn't rude.

There's a good chance whoever said that to you was a 60+ yr old nit who only speaks to complain about the dealer.

Normally I try to be a total gentleman when I play.

Earlier tonight I was playing the douchebaggiest kid of all time. He was full of asinine comments and smartass remarks, especially as he was dragging a pot. When I busted him, I found myself lacking a douchey comment of my own.

Now I have one for next time!

Thanks Tom [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img].

I don't tend to say anything, just 'cause I'm sensitive to not pissing people off. Unless of course I'm playing with friends, and then it's basicaly "holy crap you are HORRIBLE at poker".

You so luuuucky...

I try not to say anything when I win...but I win pots so rarely it hardly matters...

Last night I had a oesd on the turn bet out, got min raised by a super aggro and called. River was my bingo. I stupidly checked and he checked behind with 2pair. I felt dumb, but...

As I dragged the pot he steamed: "You're a good player dude! Nice Hand!"

"Thanks dude!" I said cheerfully. "Nice minraise!"

Re: Is it rude to speak while dragging a pot?

It is best not to "stack and yack". The main reason for this is that you usually don't know how what you will say will affect the game. This is similar to showing your cards in an uncalled pot - with experience, you will know what to show and to whom. Same with the chatterbox - unless you have good reason to say what you are saying (like Tony G. or on the other spectrum, Sammy F.), it is best to keep your mouth SHUT!

GL at the tables.
