Quitting smoking weed. Please help!

Hi guys. Since there are so many smokers here it seems like I thought I would post this in OOT.

I have smoked bud for 12+ years daily. Lots of it. Over an eighth a day, and many days more like a quarter or more. I have not gone more than a week without smoking (vacations, etc.) since I started.

I decided that this was pretty retarded (please, let's not debate whether I should quit or not, it's obvious to me I should.)

So, I am on Day 36 of cold-turkey not smoking. I feel like absolute [censored]. I want to punch everyone I see. Pretty much every little thing is pissing me off big time. I can't concentrate and I feel very depressed. I've been road raging at everyone on the streets.

Please tell me these feelings will go away eventually. I read that it takes 70 days for everything to clear out of my system. I don't want to do it any more, like I'm not fiending for it at all, I just feel awful physically and mentally.

I also smoked cigarettes but quit those well over 3 years ago. Quitting weed is very similar I think, although I think I might feel worse quitting pot.

Please share your experiences with quitting smoking ganga and reassure me I will feel better not smoking dope eventually than I did smoking dope. Thanks very much.

This is not a troll post or anything. I'm serious. I didn't want to post this under my real account. Thank you guys.

quitting weed is easy, I've done it hundreds of times.

You don't feel the way that you feel because of dope. Find out why you really feel like puching people and hating life. 70 days for it to leave your system is just dumb. It's gone from your system, it's all you now.

haha.

Dude, I'm pretty impressed you're on day 36. You'd be a nut to quit now. I'm sure you're through the hardest part.

I agree with the dude saying get professional help. If 70 days is the break point, do what it takes to get there.

Post in this thread everyday to keep us updated. You've come a helluva long way to day 36. You are probably in the thick of the pain right now, so realize that and don't let it beat you.

I was under the impression that there's very little physical withdrawl from weed??? After that much time I'm pretty sure you just dont remember what your normal personality is. You were probably a very frustrated person who was self medicating with weed. Someone said to start drinking but I'd amagine that's the worst idea ever because if you feal like punching everyone right now, you'll probably follow through on it drunk.

I guess I dont have any real advise other then maybe try and get a lot of excersise to try and calm yourself down.

dogdrool 07-19-2006 11:35 PM

Re: Quitting smoking weed. Please help!

As amplify implied, people often self-medicate with weed. So it's possible that you've always felt like road-raging, but have just been mellowing yourself with weed.

You should find some alternate aveneus for relaxation or stress release. Perhaps working out.

Re: Quitting smoking weed. Please help!

I think seeking some counseling would be a good idea. I recently gave up both marijuana and drinking, and I applaud you for making it 36 days. It already sucks a little bit on day 2, and I hope I can make it as long as you did. But I think having some one help you get through this would be really helpful.

monkeyspank 07-19-2006 11:42 PM

Re: Quitting smoking weed. Please help!

I really never had these anger issues before now, so I really feel that the withdrawal has a lot to do with it. I do agree that I was self-medicating with weed a whole bunch though.

Saying I feel like punching everyone I see is really overstating it. I'm just way more tense and irritable than normal (stoned).

amplify, I do appreciate what you say but I've researched a lot about marijuana addiction and the 70 day thing seems to be pretty standard for everything to get out of your system. I smoked a whole boatload so perhaps it is even longer.

I just looked at a page saying that your emotional swings should be back to "normal" after 3 months. It takes a long time I guess but I am determined to get through it.

No way am I smoking weed again. And sorry, I can't update this thread every day but I will try to bump it sometime.

Thanks guys for your support. I'm glad some of you know how hard it was to go over a month, especially after years of heavy abuse.

PS - I have started drinking some, not a lot.

An eigth a day? Was that costing you around $35/day?

Whatever it was, start putting that money in a jar everyday and start watching it grow. If you start now, by day 70 you'll have around a thousand bucks. Then buy a really nice hooker. or two.

Oh and if you get the huge urge to blaze, call somebody and tell them. Perhaps try NA (narcotics anonymous)

GL, keep us posted

I've never been addicted to weed but I'm 100% sure that it's similar to cigarettes in that quitting the physical addiction is easy, but the psychological addiction is the real challenge.

Re: Quitting smoking weed. Please help!

Over time, the feelings will go away. I quit smoking about a year ago and after 2 months I felt back to normal. The problem is THC is fat solube and is stored in your fat cells which makes clearing it out of your system a slow process. I probably had an easier time quitting because I only smoked regularly for about a year, but quitting wasn't easy by any means. The most common symptom from quitting weed is insomnia, which I experienced for a few weeks. Poker helped me there though. Anyways, good luck to you.

Edit: And a year from now you can look back and realize that you saved yourself $15k!

Re: Quitting smoking weed. Please help!

I've gone through it and it can be brutal. I didn't smoke quite as much as you, but I did smoke multiple times every day, for a long long time. It definately takes at least a couple of months to stop feeling crappy. Just remember, you are way better off like this. You've honestly already gotten past the hardest part... and don't start substituting drinking, it might help short term but it could eventually just end up taking weed's place as your substance of choice to abuse. Bury your head and keep plowing forward. There is an end in sight. Good luck man.... you're almost there.

I quit 5 years and 2 months ago. Yes, it can be randomly difficult early on, and you will continue to have random intervals of this really odd feeling that you know can be instantly solved by lighting up. It is all on will power to refuse. Yes, it does get easier. I doubt that it ever goes away entirely. The idea that I might actually smoke again is absurd, but there are still rare days, twice a year or so, when I get that really weird feeling that I know you're going through now. There was a response in this thread that said you might have been using weed to self-medicate. This was true for me. Part of the quitting process is learning to deal with your emotions like an adult. These feelings... are normal. Honestly, I doubt they have anything to do with weed, but you and I have been associating that feeling with the knowledge of "I need to smoke now" for years. Understand? Quitting for me was a wake-up experience. It was like I was learning, finally, how to function as an adult. It took at least a year for me to start feeling "normal," and about 3 years to stop thinging of myself as a (reformed) drug addict, first and foremost.

Years of self-medication may be a sign that you suffer from depression, as could be your emotional swings. I would talk to a doctor about that if I was you.

I quit smoking weed a little over a year ago. I only smoked two or three times a week, but I suffered a bit when I quit. For me the hard part was when I'd come in from the bars on the weekend. A few times I really really wanted to get stoned.

Even still, every so often, I think about how nice it is to be stoned.

The thought that keeps me away though is how slow and dull I felt the next day. My mind wasn't as sharp as it is now.

Maybe you should try smoking in moderation. If you really enjoy smoking weed, you shouldn't force yourself to never do it again. If I was quitting right now, I might gradually try smoking once every other day, then every weekend, and then cut it down to once per week or so whenever you feel like relaxing by yourself or enjoying the company of a few friends. Anyway, good luck and keep us updated.

Re: Quitting smoking weed. Please help!

When I quit smoking cigs I quit smoking dope too so I know what you are going through. I self-medicated with both and had a lot of problems adjusting to life without these wonderful drugs.

One thing that helped me was to eat tons of brewers yeast. Apparantly brewers yeast is a building block for the chemicals that normally bind to the receptors in your brain where the nicotine and other stuff stuck instead. After a while your body stops making these chemicals (I forget what they are called) and the BY helps you start making them again.

I found that I very slowly started to feel better so that six months after I quit I could stand it and then six months after that I was ok and six months after that I felt pretty "normal" again.

Good Luck

Edit for - serotonin is the chemical I believe. Stimulating endorphin production will help you feel better too I think they bind up similiar to the serotonin in your brain. So think about starting a regular exercise program or if you are feeling [censored] at least run around the block a couple of times.

You can smoke a quad in one day? You are a god my friend. I heard that Snoop Dogg would go through an ounce a day amongst his posse during his prime.

Seriously though, and I bet all the stoners would agree, you'd lose so much weight/be healthier if you quit.

No, if he's smoking 1/8 to 1/4 every day, then he's got a serious problem, and it's very unlikely that being an occasional smoker is an option for him. Would you tell someone who downed two liters of vodka a day just to have an occasional drink or two?

To the OP: do your friends smoke regularly? If so, you're going to have a very hard time hanging out with them and staying sober. Something to consider. Also, as has been suggested, if you ever get the urge don't be afraid to call someone or go to a meeting -- NA or AA, in most places it won't matter which, and in some places AA would be vastly preferable. Good luck, sir.
