High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
Just got this through NetFlix & watched it. I enjoyed the movie quite a lot...I don't know if it's technically a good movie (although I think it's safe to say Michael Imperioli is a darn fine actor)....I don't know if I would have enjoyed the movie had I not been a poker player or been interested in Stuey...but - since I am - I did enjoy it.
What a completely insane life...I can't even imagine. ****SPOILER**** The scene where he calls out every card in Pat Morita's gin-rummy hand after only 4 discards, from a card playing perspective, is probably the most captiviating moment in the film. The movie really made me realize that there are some people who just operate on levels that I'll never experience. On the other hand - it also made me thankful that I pretty much have my head straightened on tight - and I'm not THAT addicted to "the action". |
Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
My thoughts are the exact opposite. I hated everything about this movie from poker to Michael Imperioli. :/

Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
captain,
I thought this was in the running for worst movie I've ever seen. I can't think of a single thing about it that didn't suck. |
Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
I can understand why someone would hate this film...but feel free to expand on that opinion.
I guess I liked the movie because it's on a topic that I'm very, very interested in....and - I DON'T think the movie glorifies the lifestyle he lived at all...which I could see being a potential criticism. Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
I guess I won't apply for that job as movie critic then....

Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
Michael I. can do no wrong in my eyes.
The sound and editing sucked--and I've never said that about any movie, ever. On the whole, I recommend it (barely). |
Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
I couldnt watch past the first 30 minutes or so.

captain, I thought this was in the running for worst movie I've ever seen. [/ QUOTE ] That sounds like the opinion of someone who hasn't seen Shade. |
Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
As a movie it was very unspectacular, but the content interested me enough so that I didn't mind.
|
Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
This is without a doubt one of the worst movies I have ever seen.
The Gin scene with Pat Morita was entertaining, though. |
Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
Or a Night at the Roxbury.

[/ QUOTE ] This was the only part of the movie worth seeing in my opinion. It's a shame because it could have been really good but it was just done all wrong. I think it needed more creative writing or a more original plot development. The music montages where Stu wins the WSOP and is recovering from drugs are terrible, especially for such important areas of his life. The movie felt like a generic made for TV movie about a"gifted person who got messed by drugs". I actually fast-forwarded through many parts of the film. |

Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
Let's just hope Nolan Dalla's book which was optioned will be made into a film...while this film will have to do for now, Nolan's has the potential to be so much better.

[/ QUOTE ] Agreed, Shade was alot worse then High Roller. I think one of the quotes from Shade referred to the game as "Unlimited Texas Hold em". Why is it so hard to make good poker movies? |
Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
I dont know why it's hard to make good movies when it's so easy to make a GREAT tv series about poker.
TILT!!! |

Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
oh c'mon....
the gin-rummy scene with Pat Morita was entertaining....and so was the 7-2o vs. KK scene. |
Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
I thought it was entertaining, even if the movie as a whole was poorly made. I'm assuming it was straight to video.
|
Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
I thought the movie was okay. A lot of that opinion is probably based on the fact the movie seemed ultra budget.

Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
I thought it was terrible as well. Was thoroughly dissapointed in it. I can't remember specifics, but I made a post at another website about I think - yeah, here's what I said:
"I thought it was half-decent at best... Felt more like a remake of Rounders/Goodfellas/Sopranos than anything else. I don't know, it wasn't very informative...I think it should have been placed in the hands of a better director, like Scorcese, who is the master of bio movies." Someone asked me if it was worth watching, "I guess, if you have nothing better to do. honestly, I felt it told me nothing about Stu Ungar." But yeah, didn't think Imperioli was good for this. And the editing/directing was terrible. I havn't seen it in a while though, so I can't add anything else. |
Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
seems people either really hate it or like it pretty well....still havent seen it and dont know exactly when ill get around to it...is there a youtube link to that one scene everyone is talking about?

[/ QUOTE ] [/ QUOTE ] A Night at the Roxbury can't be considered the worst movie of all time, since it had no potential. It starts so low and is about such a stupid concept that no matter how bad it is/could be, it wouldn't be the worst movie of all time. That's why I consider "The Day After Tomorrow" the worst movie of all time. It sucks on every possible level, but the people that made the movie clearly tried to make a good/serious movie. I never thought anything would beat Final Destination as my all time worst movie, but The Day After Tomorrow smoked it! Sorry for the thread-derailing. I liked the movie, but it definitely could have been better. I find the personality/talent of Stu Ungar so interesting that it probably compensated for the bad parts of the movie. |
Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story

Game Over Stu really was bad though. bad characters, acting, script, cinematography. everything seemed amateurish. i strongly suspect the people defending the movie are just suckers for poker/gambling stories and may also have a stu ungar fetish. if thats really your thing, i can see being able to look past all that, but the average viewer would probably rather watch some vincent price b-movie than the Stu Ungar story. |

Re: High Roller:the Stu Ungar story
If not for the Gin-Rummy scene this movie would be less than worthless. As it is, it is just worthless. It was really bad and not in a good way.
