When to move up from NL25?

Hi all
This is based on Fimbulwinter's legendary post:

When do move up from NL25?

and is a compilation of articles/threads I've mainly collected or found using the search feature Pokey: 'How to use 2+2's search engine' that I used/am using to improve certain aspects of my game that I thought it might be of help to those like myself moving from NL25 to NL50.

[ QUOTE ]

What approximate win rate (after a significant # of hands of course) do you think should one should have at NL25 before making the move to NL50?

Thanks a lot.

first off you should never view it as a quantum leap kinda thing. just take little shots when you feel comfortable, have the money and are good enough. here's a hand waving yardstick:

try 50NL when:

- you're confident in your preflop game
- you understand position
- you have a good idea of their hand by the river
- you have an ok feel when to continuation bet
- you have 500 or more

1. You're confident in your preflop game

I can't give you confidence, only a boatload hands will but here's some preflop threads to start you build your own preflop strategy:

Fimbulwinters' 6max hands - require goot postflop ability
UOPoker's 6max beginners guide
Pokey SH TAG - good for transitioning FR->6max TAGS
Preflop strategy for a LAG can be found here

2. You understand position

Epdaws 'Playing Out of Position' (OOP)
Pokey's article on using position preflop - also TAG FR starting hands

3. You have a good idea of their hand by the river

4. You have an ok feel when to continuation bet

5. You have 500 or more

I believe he meant start taking shots at NL50 when you have 500 as the commonly accepted bankroll for your current limit is x20 buyins.

Here's AJ's take on " Bankroll and Moving Up "

Finished, took longer than i thought and that was after a pruning, hope this is of some use to some and not just repeating.
All the Pooh bah (PB) can now be found in the SSNL Master Sticky.

Many thanks to all the posters (many uncredited) who've contributed to this compilation
-without their posts and insight this compilation wouldn't exist.

Thanks for the support guys ( and gals ).
I'm now playing NL50 so this is a shameless bump so that someone/people hopefully might do the moving from NL50 -> NL100.

I was thinking about making exactly the same thread long time ago. Now all we have to do is to cover other skills which are required for further transitions.

VNH sir...I've taken a shot once in awhile at $50NL...this will definitely help the $25NL game and the $50NL.

I was just wondering what people's thoughts were on the general type of play that takes place at the $50 level as opposed to the $25?

I have just started cash games last week and have increased my bankroll now from $124 to $471 since last Monday playing around 3 hours a day. Is play pretty similar on each level, still full of fish?

It gets a little harder, but not twice as hard, so once you have a roll, that you feel is adequate, by all means move up

Okay cool, I think I'm going to wait until I have just over $1000 before dabbling at the $0.25/$0.50 level - I like to feel as comfortable as possible. At this rate it should only be a week or so until I can do that anyway - I'm looking forward to it!

I remember reading that an overlooked way to move up at Party is NL25 --> NL100 because NL50 is harder than NL100.

Thoughts?

how could 25NL be harder than 100NL

That bad huh? What can you attribute this to? Trying too hard, playing too many hands, bad variance?

It isn't, trust me on this. There are fish everywhere .. so that aside the thing is, that NL50 is a lot tighter and more nitty than 25NL, so especially FR feels like rockcity.

At 100NL you again encounter a looser game, so some tend to think, hey .. they are playing loose again, this must be good. But the thing is, that many of these loose player unlike 25NL have no intention of going broke passively. They are much more aggressive than at 25NL and some of them might even laydown TPTK or an overpair if need be.

So yes, 100NL is not as dry as 50NL, but on the other hand also more aggressive.

All in all it is slightly harder than 50NL.

Re: When to move up from NL25?

I meant 50NL BTW

gmac 07-20-2006 04:36 PM

Re: When to move up from NL25?

Why is 100NL a lot more loose than 50NL do you think?

I don't like the idea of when I move up to 50NL of having no action from looser players, and when I do get a hand, only getting called by rocks in "rockcity" at full ring and it becoming a battle of the luckiest stronger hand...

Where do most people find they make most money, at what lower limit? If I put in more hours a day than I do, I'm sure I could make a great deal of money for a side income if not main income, even at the 25NL level, and was hoping I'd be making more with each move up, but playing tighter players at the next level of 50NL has me a bit concerned... I guess this is similar to the difference to 1/2 and 2/4 in limit. I guess it must be some psychological about this.

OP, great post and good work, this should be linked to from the FAQ or something.

Re: When to move up from NL25?

Great post and I have to add my 50NL vs 100NL theory.

50NL is 10NL & 25NL people that moved up.

100NL has a lot of people who make respectable money that start playing at that level because they couldn't imagine playing nickel/dime or dime/quarter poker. It's just too cheap for them.
