An embarrassing question. What is the official 2+2 laptop?

Sorry, just jumped into OL poker, b&m is killing me, well rather, I would like to try something different for a while.

I presently own a mac os. Looking at all the downloads, the common thread seems to be PC. I would like to buy a new laptop.

What is the most proficient PC 'book out there?
Does anyone use mac?
Intel or AMD?
WiFi?
I don't use blue-tooth, so I would use an external mouse.

I see Dell inspiron alot on this site. I guess this is the main enchilada, huh?

Thanks for the help.

Okay, every one flame me, but can't I get an answer for the trouble.

Sorry, but my experiences ths far with online poker has been disconnections and the like. Since I used my buddies "high tech" computer while these sort of things happened, I would like to know what is really dependable, easy to see, etc. I would shop it all around, but I don't think that Comp USA would appreciate me downloading party on all of their floor models.

Need to know what your budget is.

For laptops, Intel.
Having a laptop with wifi included is nice, but if you have to pay a lot for it...I see it as a waste of money when you can get a card for $10-$30.

Assuming this is just going to be used for poker just look for the best deal around $500 (and you can probably even find one a lot cheaper than that).

For RAM, look to getting anywhere from 512MB to 1Gig. You can save some money on this if you are comfortable adding it yourself and buying it from a seperate retailer (Crucial for instance).

You don't need a super big HD. 20-40GB should be sufficient (then again with Poker Tracker, you may need/want bigger).

And any processor over 1GHz (or 1.5GHz) will be sufficient. You may want faster, but look to spending more money then.

Dell is popular, but there are lots of others companies out there that make laptops that are good enough when they are going to be just used for things like the internet or in your case, poker.

another key is getting monitor that supports 1920x1200 resolution. This is a must for non overlapgaming.

Pretty much every poker player I know worth his salt has a Dell Inspiron 6000.

Re: an imberassing question. what is the official 2+2 laptoP?

Macbooks will run Windows better than most Windows machines will. Plus you can use Mac OS when you're not playing poker, which is a huge plus, and they're light.

The Inspiron 6000 is no longer made (you would go insane trying to multitable and see the cards on a 15" 1920x1200 screen anyway - it's bad enough on a 17").

The Inspiron e1705 is the current Dell that supports 1920x1200. It's 17" instead of 15 (good) but it's large and heavy (bad).

I have the 1705 and like it well enough, but if Apple had come out with Boot Camp sooner, I'd have bought a core duo Mini and a 20-inch monitor.

My vote is for a Dell Inspiron as well. (Have two).

Very important: be sure you get at least a 1680x1050 screen to help with the overlap.

My understanding is that you can get a WUXGA screen on a 6000 that can do at least 1600x1200.

By the way, the advice in this thread is wrong. Correct answer is Dell Inspiron 9300, and it's not even close.

My vote was not for the 6000, mine is an 8500, but my vote is for the best Inspiron you can get.

You always need to buy the best to get any kind of performance window for the next year or two.

I buy the best Laptop Dell has, then when the warranty is about to run out, do it again, rinse and repeat.

I don't know how familiar you are with computers, but if you haven't used HP before, definitely find out how user friendly they are compared to a Dell.

My wife had a Sony Vaio and you couldn't even wipe the thing properly with the software included with it because Sony liked to bundle everything together, thinking it was idiot proof that way. Instead, all they did was limit your choices.

Dell is by far the easiest system for me "get under the hood" so to speak.

If you are a geek and can operate anything, then have a party with HP.

Re: an imberassing question. what is the official 2+2 laptoP?

I see people recommending Dell Inspiron - I cannot agree. These boxes are manufactured for home use, and Dell intentionally cuts quality on the components for home-use product, and the high prices are simply not justified. (Dell's business line, on the other hand, is rock solid - e.g., the Latitude).

Dell still has a good name, but they are taking advantage of it right now, and designing their products to fail slightly after the one-year warranty period. Don't be suckered.

I've posted before on this topic, with an example of an Inspiron with a power connecter (integrated on the motherboard) that consisted of 5 very thin copper strands for connectivity. There is only design purpose for using thin copper strands for the power exchange: so that the friction will wear them away with each use of the recharger. As an everyday user of the Inspiron, my total failure occurred at 13 months - just as designed.

Go back to the home page and click on "small business". It's under there. Not really sure of the difference between the 9400 and E1705, though. They look pretty similar.

The E1705 is what I got and so far I'm very happy with it. With the WUXGA display 4 tables w/no overlap is no problem.

If you buy Dell make sure to check out a site like Coupon Mountain for discount codes. There's almost always a coupon deal. I added options to mine to get the price up to $1999, which entitled me to $750 off. Basically got every option I'd want for $1250.

Here's my .02: I have used Dells for about 8 years. The Inspirons had some inferior parts about 4 to 5 years ago in my opinion, I think now the Inspiron is a great laptop I use the 6000 and have not had a single issue.

BTW I am an IT manager and all I will purchase are Dells.

Re: an imberassing question. what is the official 2+2 laptoP?

Consider what sites you're interested in.

Both Party & Stars (the latter in a well functioning beta client) now offer re-sizeable tables, so full UXGA is no longer necessary for over-lap free multi-tabling.

Consider whether you want to travel with you laptop or just use it at home. No need to spend money on ultra-portability if it's not leaving the house.

Consider that HP/Compaq is not hardware compatible with the rest of the market (and should IMHO be avoided at all cost). Later upgrades (RAM/HD) are expensive or impossible. This is not a moot point - I have upgraded RAM in all of my laptops as the prices dropped way down.

For Official 2p2 Laptop...

I nominate the Dell Inspiron XPS M2010.

20.1" screen 1680x1050 Display

Super top flight everything else, but the main thing is the big display.

A bit weighty at 18lbs and not cheap at $3,800.

Stars is out of beta now.

And as a bonus (and because Stars loves to demonstrate how their software mops the damn floor with Party) you can also resize Stars tables UP. Nothing like one monitor-filling table to create that live-game feeling.

If you're going to buy a laptop that you can't really take anywhere (and the 9400/E1705 really fits that description too), you can save money and get more functionality by buying a Mac Mini and a 20" monitor.

Okay, wow, thanks everybody.

I was going to buy a brand new computer no matter what. I'm glad everybody put their input on what they think is best. I was looking at this Compaq, or AlienWare, or Dell, so there I have it. Maybe I will stay with Mac, considering it is usable still.

As usual, plenty of food for thought from 2+2.
