WWE Champion RVD and Sabu Arrested

HANGING ROCK — Two wrestling superstars from Extreme Championship Wrestling and World Wrestling Entertainment may be tough in the ring, but they didn’t have enough muscle to escape drug charges after being stopped Sunday night by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Robert Alex Szatowski, aka WWE and ECW champion Rob Van Dam, and Terry Michael Brunk, aka Sabu, also a former ECW champion, were pulled over on U.S. 52, near Patrick Street in Hanging Rock at about 10:15 p.m. The two were apparently driving from their performances at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena earlier in the evening.

According to the OSHP, Szatowski was initially stopped for speeding. When troopers approached his vehicle, they smelled marijuana and performed a search. Troopers found the wrestler in possession of 18 grams of marijuana and five Vicodin, prescription pain pills. Brunk was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and also had nine pills that were not immediately identifiable, but were known to be controlled substances, according to the OSHP. Both were cited and posted bond at the scene.

Szatowski, of Battle Creek, Mich., has had a long, successful career with both the WWE and ECW. In addition to being the current champion of both, he has been intercontinental champion six times, hardcore champion four times and has been a part of several championship tag team duos.

He is scheduled to wrestle tonight on WWE Raw and is also wrestling Tuesday night to retain his WWE and ECW titles during the “Extreme Rules Match” on the Sci-Fi channel.

Brunk, who lists his hometown as Bombay, India, on the WWE Web site, has also had a successful career with the ECW, earning world heavyweight championship titles two times and tag team championship honors three times.

Both Brunk and Szatowski are scheduled to appear at 10 a.m. Thursday in Ironton Municipal Court. Both wrestlers won their matches last night in Huntington, W.Va. Van Dam defeated the Big Show and Sabu defeated Justin Credible.

Any Talent who is arrested, convicted or who admits to a violation of law relating to use, possession, purchase, sale or distribution of prohibited drugs will be in material breach of contract and subject to immediate dismissal.

I guess RVD and Sabu will be getting a call from Johnny Laurinaitis soon telling them "creative has nothing for you"...

RVD's a stoner? Next you'll tell me Elton John's gay.

It's no shock to me that he smokes weed.

It'll be interesting to see if WWE follow their new drugs policy and release one of their top tier talents. I doubt they want to give someone like RVD away to TNA (even though TNA will book him horribly and he'll become just another guy after 2 weeks).

back when in my teens when i used to love ECW, RVD was always known as a stoner. Infact, he was on the cover of High Times at one point. This was bound to happen.

Yeah, not very surprising but [censored] stupid. This is probably why it took RVD so long to get pushed in the first place.

Sabu is actually from Michigan. I found it pretty funny that they research the wrestlers real names but than used their WWE hometown. If The Ultimate Warrior was arrested would the news report say he was from parts unkown?

If WWE decided to suspend/fire either of these guys it would basically kill ECW. To any Sabu hatters please watch his old ECW matches, he was incredible and is still decent now.

RVD was pushed to revive ECW. I haven't given up on the new ECW yet, but the fans aren't as into it as in the old days and many of the wrestlers (Dreamer, Sabu, Richards, Sandman, etc.) Have aged a lot in 8 years.

Totally overrated sloppy, dangerous spot monkey that blows spots way too often. I'm surprised he didn't kill himself or John Cena on his debut.

Re: WWE Champion RVD and Sabu Arrested

valid i guess, but at least they're good spots plus he has been fine since he to wwe/ecw and is probably the second most over ecw guy behind rvd

cena is the one that nearly killed him with that [censored] up FU over the ropes onto a table.

I'd be willing to bet that this has everything to do with him losing the belt last night. Supposedly yesterday Vince and the higher ups had a closed door meeting for almost the entire day(which would probably explain how god awful raw was last night) and they decided that they won't make a full decision until tommorrow.

I doubt that they will be fired, but I can see some burying on sabu possibly and maybe RVD. RVD having the belt taken off of him is pretty bad punishment as is because it will really effect his pocketbook since he won't be getting the champions extra cut from merchandise and etc

Great, the first world title change on Raw in over 4 years and it's only because of this. Looks like law enforcement is making the show more interesting than the writers ever could.

WWE is actually pretty good right now. I've enjoyed watching it over the last few weeks with the whole DX thing and ECW vs WWE deal.

Re: WWE Champion RVD and Sabu Arrested

Anyone who thinks Sabu is overrated either hasn't followed wrestling for very long or is only familiar with WWE/WCW. Some of the matches he worked in ECW in the mid 90's and in Japan throughout the 90's are among the best I've seen. I'm not even a big Sabu fan but the guy has had some great matches. Is he a good fit for WWE? No, probably not, but that doesn't mean he's overrated.

RVD on the other hand has always annoyed me. The only times I liked RVD was when he got his big heel push in early 97 and when he worked the series of matches with Jerry Lynn. Otherwise, all his matches are exactly the same, a series of the same high spots in the same order, over and over again. I don't think he's done anything different in 4 years. Plus, I find his character to be dull. Probably one of the most athletically gifted wrestlers in the business, but I've never understood why he gets so over.

As for the arrests, they're bad news for ECW obviously. The ECW lockerroom is still pretty small. The only guy really who could take the ECW belt off RVD would be Angle, but I don't know if that would get over well. WWE needs to give ECW a few more quality wrestlers and help establish a tag division (which has always been a strong point in ECW). Right now, the shows have been kinda blah. Seeing the Sandman come in and beat up some jobber (the Zombie? wtf?) gets old really quickly. If ECW is gonna survive, they need a wider range of talent.

Originally they advertised that last night was going to be a Triple Threat Tag Team Match with RVD, Cena, and Edge each picking a partner of their choosing. THEN, tonight on ECW, it would be RVD vs. Edge for both belts. One would assume RVD would retain as the main event advertised for Saturday Night's Main Event next week was the three-way dance between them for the belt.

This happened and ... the SNME match got bumped up to last night. What happens tonight on ECW will be, um, extremely telling.

TheRover 07-04-2006 07:15 PM

Re: WWE Champion RVD and Sabu Arrested

I can't see them giving Edge the ECW belt, I don't see how that wouldn't kill the "company". And aren't they in Philly?

Maybe (I doubt it) they could get away with it for a couple weeks, but who would get it after Edge if RVD is being punished? It needs to be on an old ECW guy and other than Sabu no one is even close to being able to carry it.

I don't think anyone thinks Sabu is as good now as he was 5-10 years ago, although I assume that you didn't see the 3 way barbed wire match at Hardcore Homecoming which was one of his better matches. I don't see how he can be considered "overrated" (if you mean overrated currently as opposed to overrated for his whole career). Sabu isn't really over with the WWE fans and most ECW fans realize that he has declined due to the wear and tear on his body.

As for the show tonight, ECW is pretty much screwed if McMahon decides to fire/suspend RVD and Sabu. The product is already weak, Angle is out for a month or so and there isn't anyone ready to take the title. Big Show wouldn't be a good champ (not over with old ECW fans and not sure how many wrestlers could work a good main event with him). Justin Credible could be an ok champ if they give him the same character he had in 2001. Other than that? Test? CW Anderson?

TheRover 07-04-2006 07:18 PM

Re: WWE Champion RVD and Sabu Arrested

bleh Credible is about as over as paint drying, sucks in the ring and has no charisma, although neither does RVD really.

It was just a stunt by Vince to promote ECW on SciFi Channel!!!

abarrenfuture 07-04-2006 08:00 PM

Re: WWE Champion RVD and Sabu Arrested

Credible can put on good matches with the right opponents, he's worked some great ones with Steve Corino and Jerry Lynn and some pretty decent ones with Franchise and RVD. But yeah he's basically been relegated to being a jobber since he joined WWE and would need a huge heel push to get over. I disagree about the charisma as well, he's certainly not the Rock or Steve Austin (or whoever) but he's probably got the most charisma of all the "extremists" if he was given a chance.

Jeebus, that sucks. I guess they had no choice as the story is making the AP rounds, but [censored]. I could at least count on a decent title match on ECW each week, but no longer. Couldn't they at least have given the strap to Angle?
