Best beers
Wanted to start a thread to get some ideas on what beers to try. I live in the U.S. and love to drink imports and try all different types of beer. If you're proud of a beer from your country please let OOT know what it be.
Heres mine, Domestic- Budweiser,Bud light Imports- Heinekin (amsterdam), Hoegaarden (belgium), , Red stripe (Jamaica), Negro Modelo, dos equis (mexico). |

Re: Best beers
The funny thing about Bud/Bud Light for as much criticism it receives domestically is that people abroad love it. People in countries with much better beer than the U.S. makes can't get enough BUDWEISER.
Anyway, Guinness is the best beer in the world readily available. |

[/ QUOTE ] It's becoming a bit of a fad here (UK). It's not much worse than most readily available UK lagers (which is to say, awful). Marketing can sell anything, apparently. |

When I was in the netherlands this guy told me about belgium beers being the best. He metioned that he loved budweiser from the states but it was hard to get where he was at. |

Re: Best beers
Is the OP out of his mind? There are two types of beers:
1) Good beers that taste really good. Newcastle. Dogfish head. Guiness. Sam Smiths. 2) Beers that are good enough to slam back with your buddies. Beers that are cheaper so you can easily order rounds with your friends. Beers that are light so you don't feel like you're drinking anything heavy. These are the OP's top beers. I drink both kinds. I'll order up a round of bud or drink some dosXX with a burrito. But if I "drink beer" I am certainly sticking to #1. Who says "damned, this bud light SURE is a tasty beer. Wow?" It's true that bud and some other domestic beers are popular in Europe. I think that's because: 1) you can drink a lot of them 2) they're foreign, and hence cooler. 3) budweiser has spent zillions marketing them to tap into the global market. People in Australia laugh at you if you mention Fosters. But Fosters markets heavily over here, so I'm sure there are people who say, "Damn, this aussie beer sure is delicious. Pass me another." |
Re: Best beers
Most stuff from New Belgium and Great Divide breweries. Sam Adams Octoberfest, Blue Moon, Hoegaarden, Ropewalk Amber, most of the Red Hooks, Guinness, Murphys, Cutthroat Porter, Killian's....just the ones I can name in thirty seconds.

Re: Best beers
All white ales are pretty good.
I think a lot of the foreign beers in this thread taste like bitter horse piss, but whatever. People think it's cool since their "foreign". Kirin>Sapporo>Asahi |
Re: Best beers
yuengling--sp?, newcastle, guiness, harp, bass all come to mind

Re: Best beers
"Beer snob" is kind of an oxymoron, isn't it?
I love Shiner Bock, but it may taste better to me because it's from central Texas, like me. |
Re: Best beers
Im in Ohio so yuengling (PA) is pretty much local brewery stuff. I enjoy it though.
Sierra nevada pale ale I tried for the first time last week, while in pittsburgh, actually. The bartender looked at me crazy when I said I never heard of it. It was quite tasty though and I stayed with it for a while. I would like to try more belgium beers if anyone has a recommendation. I will try dogfish head and sam smiths next time I'm out. |

[/ QUOTE ] I don't know exactly what the story is with this, but isn't there another beer that is/was called Budweiser, originally a Czech recipe? It was banned from using that name here in the states and is called "Czechvar" here (which just means 'Czech beer' I think). I have been told that in other parts of the world it is still sold as Budweiser. I'm assuming the beer referenced here is the American version. I don't mind drinking Bud in a bar. It's totally drinkable and actually packs more punch than a lot of other beers. I also really like to order very pale ales or lagers on tap, have had a few good microbrewed ones although I am not a major microbrew kinda guy. One was Steel Rail Pale Ale from Berkshire Brewing Company, which they had in the restaurant I used to work at. Another was some beer called 'Sweet Ups' (??) which I had at a bar in Brooklyn a few weeks ago. At home I usually drink Modelo Especial, Tecate, or Pabst NT |
Re: Best beers
I love Rodenbach as well. It's actually easy to get on tap in DC, and I believe most Whole Foods stock it. Extremely unique and extremely tasty.

[/ QUOTE ] One thing that makes Whole Foods so great is their large beer selection. In addition to many selections in six packs, they also carry a lot of unique pints and 40z. I think the cool thing about beer is you can both be a beer snob and a beer drinker. I love trying new beers and thinking about how they're made and how they taste compared to other beers. I also love pounding back some old standby for the refreshing whalop. |
Re: Best beers
The only reason I make the trek to Whole Foods is for beer.

Re: Best beers
Hempale. Anyone tried this one? I had it in sanfransico at a small place on highway 1. I actually felt a little high after I drank it. Dont know if this was just mindtricks or what. It had a bird on the label I think a hummingbird.

Re: Best beers

My favorites are Grimbergen (the best beer I ever had was Grimbergen on tap) and Verboden Vrucht. Other good trappistenbiers/Belgian abbey ales are Corsondonk, Chimay. La Trappe (which is the only trappistenbier brewed in the Netherlands), and Leffe. Westmalle is very widely distributed as well, but it is too bitter for my (relatively unsophisticated tastes). |

There was a dispute over use of the name, so Czechvar is the name on the label here. I'm sure you could google budvar czechvar budweiser and come up with the full story. |

It is still brewed in Budweis (Cesky Budejowice) in the Czech republic. Anheuser-Busch has nothing to do with this, they just liked the name and borrowed it when they created the Budweiser brand. |
