80\'s Adolescent Angst Films (Choices for today?)

Okay, for NYE I am drinking Grey Goose Bloody Mary's, and will later go out to play some LL donk O8.

Before I get too drunk, however, I'd like to ask about today's equivalent for the 80's teenage angst films.

I was going through hell in the early to mid 80's. I found films like The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink a method of coping and keeping myself from suicide.

I forgot how good some of John Hughes films were.

Sixteen Candles 1984
The Breakfast Club 1985
Pretty in Pink 1986
Ferris Bueller's Day Off 1986
Some Kind of Wonderful 1987

So what is the equivalant for today's teens? I admit, I just don't watch movies like I used to. Do today's teens have these kind of great "over the hump of hell" films to get them through adolescence? Napoleon Dynamite?

Anyone, anyone? Bueller?

Re: 80\'s Adolescent Angst Films (Choices for today?)

Mean Girls is actually pretty good, I would definitely recommend it over Napoleon Dynamite. ND is more of a wannabe-hip metagenre movie than a true teen angst flick. And anyway, it's just a third-rate Rushmore ripoff.

Ghost World is also good although it doesn't really fit that 80's template and is a bit more serious.

Clueless was really big a while ago and is the go-to movie for teenage girls on how to talk in lots of California.

I agree that Mean Girls is a fun watch.

John Hughes really was a great natural talent for those kinds of movies. It's funny how he was everywhere then disappeared -- I wonder if he died soon after or something.

At 1989, Say Anything was really excellent. Hugely recommended if you haven't seen it. Barely qualifies as an 80's film and isn't the ensemble kind of thing Hughes specialized in, but stil a great teen/young people movie.

John is still a giant in his profession. He went to those little kid films not long after. See the link I posted (Home Alone, Beethoven, Vacation, Curly Sue, etc).

I have Say Anything, too, the newest release. Excellent.

I never had to have any moves to "get me over the hump."

I was generally a happy kid and not a whiny emo.

The advice in this thread blows. Can't Hardly Wait is far and away the best 80s movie teen film type thing to come out since the 80s. Some of the other films listed here are good (Rushmore is my favorite movie) but only Can't Hardly Wait fits the mold perfectly.

Saying I had bad teenage years (not elaborating by saying I had an abusive, alcoholic stepfather), is NOT being a whiny emo.

Completely. I love that movie and was really the last movie that fit the genre.

As another child of the 80's, I thought American Beauty captured teen angst and mid-life crises pretty well.

SLC Punk (1999) was a great semi-indie film that a lot of people missed. But since it was set in the 80's I don't know if it qualifies as a "modern" teen angst film.

Honestly, though, I think that John Hughes already perfected the genre with his aforementioned films, with The Breakfast Club being his masterpiece. At a party last night I was talking to a 22 & 23 year-old, both of whom own & love that movie.

It was definitely surprisingly good. Great song too.

I'm surprised I didn't know Hughes had remained so active. I guess I just blanked him out because I don't like the kind of movies he did after that.

Can't think of a thing recently that hasn't been mentioned, but no one has mentioned three others that fit in the "classic" category:

Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982)
Valley Girl (1983)
Heathers (1989)

Valley Girl is probably the most obscure of the bunch, track it down if you can and see it, definitely worth the effort to see a very young Nick Cage.

Take the actors, directors, and writers from all these movies so far, put them in a list, and you're going to see a list of impressive talent that continues to win awards today. I'm not sure there is a current equivalent that will be around in 20 years.

John Cusack appeared in a few of these movies in the 80's, with Say Anything just being one of them. Other movies were The Sure Thing, Better Off Dead and One Crazy Summer.
