Re: \"official\" WPT Championship IV Thread

Joe watches every move of the players he's in a pot with, even when it's his turn to act.

Folding 76 against David Matthew on a Q-7-3 rainbow flop after a min raise was impressive, to say the least.

This guy may be an idiot when it comes to bankroll management but he can play poker.

Yes. Men Said F##K. Also, WTF was with that 92o vs. 95 hand raised PF?

Not that any of these guys (except Matthew to an extent) are bad players, but its still pretty sad this is the best final 5 that this ridiculously tough field could produce.

well not too surprising considering wpt events for the most part turn into push fests when it gets deep and you don't have a monster stack. so i guess at these points luck>skill

btw, what did u mean in reference to joe and bad BR management?

Cardplayer made a big article on Bartholdi recently where he talked about how he's gone busto over a dozen times in his couple years of playing poker... taking too many shots at stakes above his bankroll (and skill).

James Van tilt Styne. Anyone catch that comment that vvp said after Men the master was in a hand that he was steaming like a laundromat. Totally uncalled for wtf was that

That's really smart to call off your last three million in chips without even looking at the board. Good job Claus. You'll definitely make a better decision the next time you are playing for four million dollars.

Re: \"official\" WPT Championship IV Thread

Pretty amazing last hand.... great semi-bluff by David Matthew, almost as if he knew what Bartholdi was holding. Bartholdi is supposed to fold the hand at that point, but makes the sickest call I've ever seen at a final table.

Honestly, does anyone here even contemplate calling $7 million there?

THEOSU 06-29-2006 12:50 AM

Re: \"official\" WPT Championship IV Thread

1) matthews was pretty aggro. an ace was unlikely due to his limp.

2) therefore, the 9 was essentially top pair. it came down to a kicker issue. the fact that matthews was also very aggro on his draws and with bottom pairs (he showed a few bottom pairs during the final table) made it more likely that just the naked 9 was good

3) matthews initially tried to bet 500k instead of 800k. remember tuan lee putting in a "call" last year with some trash like 85o, but putting too many chips in and having it serve as a raise. he then pushed over top of maxfield's reraise. it's not too often that a player underminbets with a legitimate monster.

4) despite all this, it's still an awesome call. bartholdi played really, really well.

5) i still really really feel for JVA. I know we've all been in those spots when you take a big lead to a final table, you feel good, you think you're the best player there and not only does nothing go right, but everything goes abjectly wrong. you run into the nuts, you fail to pull the trigger when they can't call another bet, and you bet once more when they will. I've been there, I've done that. I haven't been there nor done that with $3M on the line.

When he glanced at his hand at the very end of the interview, had he crushed his sunglasses or am I just seeing things?

Re: \"official\" WPT Championship IV Thread

I think Van Alstyne is actually known as a really tight player (typically.) I watched him play the final table live in Tahoe last year, and he was the short stack forever with 9 left and made it to 3rd(and went in with the best hand). Which was about 6 hours of play if I remember right. I think he seriously did mess himself up because he had the huge chiplead... Felt like he had to push people around and it isn't his style. Two of his huge bluffs would have worked if he'd been willing to bet one more time at the end...

Matthew's inverview at the end was pure class.

Re: \"official\" WPT Championship IV Thread

What was Claus thinking? Not only did he make a poor call fundamentally speaking, but isn't Roland low stacked at this point? And isn't it worth the real American cash to wait out one more spot and increase winnings by half a million?? Did anyone else notice this? I think it was a HUGE blowup, and may have cost him millions of dollars he may never make up.

billyjex 06-29-2006 02:03 AM

Re: \"official\" WPT Championship IV Thread

Claus and the black dude really sucked. At least the black dude was aggro to keep the pressure on.

joe played great. really impressed with his play. the last hand was a great call, especially with what was at stake, but the way the other guy was playing and the fact he likely didnt have an A makes it a reasonable call. if you think "omfg big 4-bet all in i only have middle pair millions on the line," then you arent playing good.

Re: \"official\" WPT Championship IV Thread

that was actually a good episode for once

alstyne is such a nitty TAG player, he really got his $hit fuct up switching to tricky LAG style play...even in position he couldn't man up to fire bullets...

he got what he deserved b/c he played horribly

the interview was awesome, but that bitch courtney freil sucks at life and can't even do a good interview

I hate her

Can someone play their DVD/recording/DVR back and listen to the comment Joe Bartholdi made (half way through the broadcast) when Joe held 7s-4d and David Matthew held As-Qs. David made it $500,000 (raise $300,000) and Joe called. Flop came 2s-Qd-Ah. Check, check. David bet $350,000. Joe raise $750,000 and David raised all in. Joe folded and made a comment. What was it?

I met Joe during a party at his house ~9 months ago. In fact, he is the one who steered me towards the 2+2 forums and our conversation inspired a much more thoughtful and dedicated approach to my game. He was very chill and mad laid back, an all around cool-azz mofo. Congratulations, Joe!

Re: \"official\" WPT Championship IV Thread

Obviously Joe played well, but it seems like he made some big mistakes. He didn't seem to pick up on David's monster tell that whenever he acted all agonized and leaned back and sighed he had a big hand.

Also, Joe kept trying to reraise him with hands he thought might be good, even after it was pretty clear David was coming over the top and he would have to fold. Seems like you should go into a call down mode there to get a cheap showdown.

BTW people are ragging on David, but I think he played pretty great for an amateur. His all-ins weren't dumb, he did it in good spots for the most part, and he's totally right that shoving like that is the best way for an amateur to have a chance.
