East Coast floods
Being flood intensive these days, I am concerned about possible flooding in my old home area of southeastern Pennsylvania. I hope all 2p2ers in that area are OK. I'd appreciate whatever updates those in the regions affected by the flooding can provide. I am especially interested flooding along the Schuylkill (especially in Berks County) and the Delaware and their tributary creeks. I know the Perkiomen flooded along the Bucks-Mont line where I used to live--and where my house flooded in Hurricane Agnes (while I was in the Black Hills of South Dakota). I read on CNN that [people are on their roofs and in their attics--that just brings back terrible memories.
BTW I had a frisson of schadenfreude to see the IRS building flooded, and the evil part of me wishes that the FEMA offices had flooded to the roof. If you are where the water is rising, take it seriously and be safe. I myself have driven through high standing water, but it is not a good idea, to say the least. |

Re: East Coast floods
What are you talking about? I'm here right now and there's nothing like that. It's humid and hot as hell.

Re: East Coast floods
Yeah there were some parking lots and streets flooded here in Baltimore but nothing severe that I heard about.

Re: East Coast floods
I did hear DC got pwned though. True?

Re: East Coast floods
I just got an e-mail from a friend in DC talking about how his basement was completely flooded and a couple people he knows got evacuated from their homes in Rockville. There hasn't been a whole lot on the news, though.

Re: East Coast floods
I was driving in Upper Mo. County (Lahill Road) sunday night and nearly drowned several times because the d00d driving was somewhat poor. He kept slamming on his brakes every time we'd hit a big patch of flooded road, and start fishtailing. At one point we came over a hill and some dumbarse was stranded in the middle of a nascent river...we had to flip over to the left land and plow through the current, then back into the other lane before whapping the oncoming traffic. It was like a four hour cloudburst, and we couldn't see out the windshield at all. That was pretty crazy. I'm glad I made it back safely to Canada (aka Bmore)...

Re: East Coast floods
I'm in one little area that "Only" got about 6 inches and it's till pretty bad. I think DC finally maxed out at over 13 inches.
The bad part is that even though the rain finally stopped last night, the streams and rivers won't crest until tonight or tomorrow. DC and central maryland got pounded... they opened some of the dams last night and some people have drowned. (a couple idiots even tried to swim in one of the flooded streams yesterday and drowned). I saw some reports last night from Harrisburg... some of the creeks have a flood stage of 11 feet. They were at 11.x last night and were projected to reach 21 feet. City Island has already been evacuated and they are beginning to evacuate other areas of PA, MD, and VA that I know of. Standing water is a huge problem and is causing erosion and some roads, bridges, etc. have collapsed. It rained so hard and fast that the water can't run off fast enough. |
Re: East Coast floods
The Schuylkill is pretty much flooding like it's never flooded before. The Delaware is going to flood worse than in the floods of April '05. Brandywine Creek, Neshaminy Creek, Perkiomen Creek are all flooding/will flood. Yardley is getting hit pretty bad, New Hope, Trenton, etc. are also getting hit. I'm in Langhorne and so far Neshaminy Creek has flooded out some of the roads along 413.
Most of the severe flooding is going to come later tonight, since most of the area hasn't peaked yet. Some places are anticipated to go 10+ feet above flood stage, so it will get bad. Last report is that 200,000 have been ordered evacuated. I'm lucky that my wife and I aren't in an area that will flood, but there is going to be a lot of damage. You can get good info on www.nbc10.com |
Re: East Coast floods
I'd like to break in for a second and opine that "East Coast Floods" would be a fine name for a band. Alternatively: "East Coast Floodz!"

Living in New Orleans means dealing with these sorts of conditions regularly. FOlks in the affected areas, do not try to drive through the high water. It is a whole lot more dangerous than you think it is, but it is so tempting to try to make it through. |
Re: East Coast floods
i'm biking through the area, or was before all the roads flooded. was in the delaware water gap and they told all hotel guests at 8 Pm they had to evacuate by 7 AM next morning. not even raining now but as people haev said the rivers are suposed to get higher still. doesn't seem like a dangerous situation with all the warnings etc. but what do i know.

Re: East Coast floods
This area got more rain than Agnes dumped in ’72, but the western areas didn’t get nearly as much. There is an earthen dam in Montgomery County that is 25 feet above flood stage and they are worried that it will fail in the next three days. Right now the Susquehanna, Schuylkill, and Delaware are rising rapidly. My parents live in that region and they said that there is talk of opening all the floodgates at Conowingo. Conowingo is currently at 22 feet above normal (flood is 23.5) It will be Friday before the rivers crest.

I did hear DC got pwned though. True? [/ QUOTE ] We got rocked at certain points and in certain areas. My area wasn't flooded too badly, but there have been times when going outside was basically like walking into a creek. I'm originally from Bucks County, my parents live in Richboro and haven't told me stories of great flooding, but the news makes it seem pretty bad. |
