Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
You know who I’m talking about. The kid who studies abroad for a semester and now thinks they could be a correspondent for the travel channel. They can’t stop talking about how good the beer was and won’t watch anything but foreign films. They rooted against the U.S. in the World Cup “on principal.” Despite having almost no grasp on international affairs, they feel free to spout-off about all kinds of complex political issues.
Please note I am not disparaging all people who have studied abroad or traveled. Just the annoying ones. What is the most effective way to get these morons to shut up? I’m looking for good one-liners in particular. |
Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
i go to the university of california-santa cruz. our school is pretty much all hippy [censored] who go study abroad and then think they could qualify as a historian for said country. i find the best way is to ignore them and disregard that they exist.

Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
In class, I would respond with facts and relevant arguments with little needling remarks worked in.
Anywhere else I would respond by making fun of the person mercilessly and ostracizing them until they pulled their head out of their ass. NT |
Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
Almost all of my friends have studied abroad (I haven't) and very very few are like this. Is it very common at your school?
|
Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
Not so much at my school, but I just moved into a house for the summer and two of the four act this way. We're all interns in DC and we found eachother on craigs list. I have a lot of friends who have studied abroad and aren't doucebags.

I usually don't see them for the two weeks after they get back since it tends to be at the end of a semester. |
Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
I'm really just looking for snappy oneliners. Right now, whenever they tell me some stupid story for the eighth time, I say "Wait, wait, you studied abroad? Where?".
|
Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
Perhaps it's not that they studied abroad but just that they are douchebags.
I studied abroad, it was fun, whatever, thankfully the rest of my life has been pretty interesting too so I don't feel the need to go on about it. One liners: "This one time, at band camp..." "Yeah, we get it, you went overseas, big [censored] deal" That or pwn them hard and publicly on some history / culture thing about their destination. Or "So in Czech [or whatever] you drank fifteen pints for three bucks? Wow. When Sup Bro was all county defensive line, Sup Bro had fifteen tackles for loss!" |

[/ QUOTE ] It really needs to be based on what they're telling you about, with really earnest people you can ask them retarded questions and wait for them to catch on. Else you should just be good at situational humor. Can't teach it, sorry [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] NT |
Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
poker-penguin,
I do not suggest that anyone follow your advice in this thread. NT |
Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
Right, I guess what bugs me is the attitude that people are pretty much worthless if they haven't been abroad. They are so cultured and I'm some unwashed orge. Clearly I'm a little pissy.
Interesting things that have happened to me while in this country: -I've been inside a prison (not as an inmate) -Stood in a union hall when 1000+ workers voted to strike -Spent time at a mosque in inner-city Philadelphia -etc The attitude that the United States is really boring and everywhere else is just amazing pisses me off. And I'm a liberal. |

Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
Just tell 'em to stop speaking Canadian.

Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
Hogtie offender to the nearest door jamb and forcibly sterilize him/her with a rusty hacksaw. Do it, for the love of all that is good and holy.

Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
Eh let's not get all political. Although they tend to be more liberal, only because conservative kids don't really study abroad much.

poker-penguin, I do not suggest that anyone follow your advice in this thread. NT [/ QUOTE ] Nor do I. Although I would love to see OP explaining Sup Bro and how it applies to their situation to the study abroad bragger. "You see, you're just like Sup Bro, because you're bragging about something not particularly special that happened a while ago. Except you're not funny." nah, NT is right, please ignore my advice. |

Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
One liner: "Interesting. By the way, I'm reporting you to Homeland Security as a possible terrorist."

Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
Search for KKF's posts and then look for devastating one-liners about Thailand he gets. Adapt them to your own circumstances.

Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
Make fun of their family. Easy, simple, and straight to the heart.
|
Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
Start interrupting their stories with really idiotic questions.
"Wait, do they speak spanish in Spain? I thought they spoke esperanto." "Wait, were you wearing a pillbox hat when you were [doing X]? Because I heard that in that country everyone wears pillbox hats." Eventually they should get the picture. |

Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
does crossing county lines to take a pregnancy test count as studying abroad?
|
Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
Every time they launch into the same 'ol same 'ol, ask really stupid "dumb tourist" type questions about where they studied.
If they studied in France, ask them if it's true they never bathe. Ask them if they got to participate in a surrender while they were there. If they studied in England, ask them if the first thing they did when they came back was see a dentist. Or if they were in any soccer (make sure to ALWAYS call it soccer!) riots. The stupider the better!! And keep asking them every time! |
Re: Dealing with Study Abroad Braggers
Think of one-liners you would aim at nerds/dorks.
Most of these study abroad braggers are uninteresting people who now think they have something interesting to talk/brag about. |
