What book would you like to see made into a movie?

I believe Enders Game would make an excellent transition onto the screen.

That's cool, didnt know there were plans to make a movie, albeit 2008. Glad to see that Card is writing the script.

Re: What book would you like to see made into a movie?

Saberhagens The 12 Swords series has the makings for the greatest 12 part epic in cinematic history. It did kinda trail off there towards the end, but the story is just so rich and full of facinating characters, i don't see how a competant screenwriter and director could go wrong.

It's perfectly structured for a series, as each of the swords has a different identity and becomes the ultimate McGuffin for really cool fanatasy stories that go far beyond your usual Dragons and Wizards BS.

To do it, right, though, it'd have to be done in roughly 10 parts. Given how badly most SK has transitioned to the big screen, it'd be tough. I'd love to see them try, though.

I just got done reading this series for the first time and I strongly agree, IF and only if Stephen King had no creative control over the movie/series.

Also, it would pretty much require sending 1980s Clint Eastwood through a time machine in order to play Roland. Other casting:

Eddie - a young Brad Pitt
Susannah - a young Angela Bassett
Jake - no idea.
The Man in Black - Kevin Spacey

It is no surprise as Eastwood's "man with no name" was a key inspiration for Roland.

Sounds liek the Gunslinger stuff would work as an HBO series, and I feel the same way about GRRM's A Song of Fire and Ice series. I'd kill to have a huge tv series of those books.

Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter. If you haven't read it, you should.

Absolutely. I'd love to see Ian McShane (Al Swearengen from Deadwood) playing Flashman in his middle years.

Foundation. Even though it sounds like a complete disaster, I'm going to make the assumption in this thread that it would be some genius director that could do it right. I wouldn't mind taking creative liberties by expanding the dialogue.

Star Wars stole a little bit of its thunder with Coruscant = Trantor, but still, I'd love to see the Seldon, Hardin, and the Mule onscreen. Plus they could get a gazillion sequels out of it.

swede123 06-27-2006 01:51 PM

Re: What book would you like to see made into a movie?

Good call. I think CGI is advanced enough to do the Foundation story justice. I'd like to see it done with a British slant, actors speaking with British accents and what not.

Catch-22.

I know, I know. But I think Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonez could do an amazing job. Maybe as a miniseries. SOMETHING.

The original was a butcher-job of one of my favorite books. It absolutely failed to capture the humor. And it had fantastic cast (Alan Arkin, Bob Baliban, John Voigt, etc.) I just don't think this one could translate to the screen. Perhaps I am wrong.

swede123 06-27-2006 03:01 PM

Re: What book would you like to see made into a movie?

I really agree. I picked up the movie Catch 22 in the budget bin at Walmart and was really excited when I saw the allstar cast...until I started watching it and it completely missed the charm of the book. I really don't think it would be possible to make a movie that did the book justice.

Too internal to translate well, I think. Same for most books.

Re: What book would you like to see made into a movie?

I was thinking more for the reason that Salinger has very specific and detailed instructions on what will happen to his works when he dies.

And while it would be daunting, I'm pretty sure a very talented filmmaker could crack the text and visualize the narrative. The challenge is part of the reason I'd like to see the film.

Ender's Game is definitely on my list. As is the Elric series (which is also in the works).

To those I would add:
