who makes just min. wage?
Just wondering, because I have never met anyone who makes only min. wage. I live in the midwest, where wages are lower than on the coasts. Here are some jobs that I know pay more than min. wage.
Dishwasher - I made $8/hour in 1999 doing this. McDonalds - My cousin made between $8 and $9 doing this before he quit a few months ago. Grocery Store - My brother made $5.25 in 1997 when he was 15 when min. wage was 4.25. Just wondering who out there is making min. wage. I'm not saying they don't exist. I'd just like to know who. |
Re: who makes just min. wage?
I start my employees out at $9.00 an hour with no experience.

Re: who makes just min. wage?
I have had 3 different jobs that paid me minimum wage.

They paid me minimum wage, and that was on Long Island, NY, where the cost of living is the highest in the country. Most of my co-workers were not kids, they were older, and were making between minimum wage, and at the highest, $6.50 an hour, and thosee were the ones who had been working there for years and years and years. The raises were ridiculous, something like 10 cents an hour (ooh big money) every year. My second job, also in High School, after Burger King did pay more than minimum wage, but only like $5.45 an hour, so not by much, that was in a beer and soda store working as a clerk. |
Re: who makes just min. wage?
Thanks to Government meddling, many waiters get minimum wage PLUS tips. W/O the min. wage many would not be paid hourly at all, tips only.
I earned min wage at 14. I earned less than min at 11. I'm stuck at poker this month. Where's my gov subsidy? |

That may be more populated areas, or areas without that many opportunities for unskilled labor but a more or less "normal" population. In the NY metro area there were several summers where, for some reason, there was a short supply of working teens, and even the McD's and BKs had to increase their pay to the $8-$9 range. This summer hasnt been like that, with less jobs and more available kids. Movie theatre help (usher, ticket seller, concession stand) is another one that pays min. wage when they have the labor supply. I dont know how it is now, but when I worked in a commercial car wash as a kid, that was min wage plus tips and sometimes you had to fight for your share of the tips! |
Re: who makes just min. wage?
I was paid $4.15/hour (CAN$) at my first job 16 years ago. I was a bagboy at a supermarket. I worked there 3 years, and I think I was making $6.25/hour as a cashier when I quit to work in a warehouse that was paying me $8/hour.
I thought I was rich when I was making $8/hour. |

If they are, that is their fault, and their fault alone. They should be glad they were getting 10 cent raises. You do realize why the raises are so small? Because the owners were doing it out of the goodness of their hearts ... they don't expect people to stay in those jobs for years and years and years ... they expect them to be filled by other people as people move on. "You are so mean," you say? No, because anyone that wants to better themselves over the years and years and years they are working at Burger King can do so. They can take the GED, go to college, go to a trade school, etc. Failing to do so, they get zero sympathy from me. NCAces |
Re: who makes just min. wage?
I believe something between 5% and 10% of the workforce actually makes minimum wage. The reason that it is such a big deal for Democrats is that union wage scale is calculated from the minimum wage. So when Congress increases the minimum wage $0.50, for example, they really couldn't care less about the 8% of poor black youths who become unemployed, they care about their Union cronies, whose pay goes up by many multiples of what the minimum wage went up, and who don't have to worry about losing their jobs, since they are protected from competition in the first place. Until they force the employer offshore or out of business. Then their members reap the rewards their Union bosses have sown.
Edit: Except, of course, government unions, which never go offshore since their employer never has to suffer losses, since the taxpayers and the Intaglio presses are will pick up any tab necessary. |

Re: who makes just min. wage?
Well let's see, according to the 2000 census the population was 281,421,906. Of that, 25.0 percent are younger than 18, and 12.4 percent are older than 65.
Subtracting those leaves ~176 million people of working age. If you call a standard deviation 16 points then I believe about 16% of this population should fall below the 84 point line. That would be 28 million people. So yeah, there are *some* |

About 20% of the population has an IQ between 74 and 89 which is considered an employable range (with considerable supervision), so Dr. S's numbers dont seem too far off. |
Re: who makes just min. wage?
Yeah if the distribution is normal, then about 16% of the population should be at least one standard deviation (16 pts per sd) below the mean. So there would be 28 million people of working age that have an IQ below 84.
I'm sure not all of them are working, but it's reasonable to assume millions are. |
