For Americans Watching the World Cup...

Re: For Americans Watching the World Cup...
This was a really poorly designed poll. This one is only for AMERICAN NON-SOCCER FANS.

Re: For Americans Watching the World Cup...
I am not a soccer fan. Have to work so I can't watch these weekday games; though I probably would if I could and I watch the weekend games. Didn't watch 4 years ago when they were on at 3:00 a.m. est. '98 I don't remember. I remember I enjoyed the '94 games in the U.S. though, but then I had to go to camp and missed knockout round because I was like 13 then. I dunno it's ok, I watch mostly because it's something different and I don't like MLB or NBA so summer is a bad sports time for me; and it's fun to root for the U.S. beat the countries that care so much more and wish America were dead. I will never become a 'soccer fan' though.

Re: For Americans Watching the World Cup...
So far I'm surprised at how much less I'm enjoying the WC than I expected. It's like every cliche about why soccer is not popular in the US has been validated.

Re: For Americans Watching the World Cup...
I work with a German citizen who has been schooling me on the finer points of the world's game; so I have enjoyed this far more than I expected to.
....we watch at work on Univision. Estados Unidos Numero Uno! |
Re: For Americans Watching the World Cup...
I don't hate soccer or anything, though I am very annoyed by the soccer guy who yesterday tried to convince me it is a more physical sport than hockey. I am enjoying this WC more than the last one, which I think is entirely due to my ability to use Tivo to speed through the extremely slow portions. Along those same lines, I find Tivo has dramtically increased my enjoyment of all sports on TV.

No, I'm not a soccer fan.
No, I am not surprised because I am continuing to not enjoy it. |
Re: For Americans Watching the World Cup...

I wanted to watch and did watch some games the first couple days, but I just can't watch more than about 10 minutes of a game, it's so boring. If I'm watching and see one goal I just think "Oh that was cool, now I don't have to watch the rest of the game because nothing else will happen." |
Re: For Americans Watching the World Cup...
Why do people put "show me the results" as a poll choice? It's retarded. The poll itself allows you the option of creating it so people can see results without voting. It's redundant, pointless, and distracting.

Retarded is that you actually find this "distracting" and then getting annoyed enough to make a post about it. |

Re: For Americans Watching the World Cup...
Living in Canada, regular soccer coverage here is non-existant. So its not even possible to consider myself a soccer fan. However when the world cup comes around, you can feel the excitement, even in a country like Canada, where we have about 0 involvement in soccer. Its exciting to partake in something so internationally big.
I love watching the world cup, and I admittedly don't watch any other soccer. |

You never see six hockey players per game carried off on a stretcher. That soccer must be one dangerous sport. I haven't seen a stretcher get that much use since old-school WWWF wrestling. |

Re: For Americans Watching the World Cup...
I think adding the show me results poll addition is worthless, because really does anyone actually care what the results of a poll are, like does op come back and check the results and think wow how interesting i've learnt alot from this poll I posted. No polls are gimicy and lame, they are just another internet time waster, along the same lines as most of the threads I start, or the posts I make here.

I don't hate soccer or anything, though I am very annoyed by the soccer guy who yesterday tried to convince me it is a more physical sport than hockey. [/ QUOTE ] This is obviously true. Contrast: - Hockey players, who go down from Barney-hug-like "bodychecks" into the boards and then get right back up and keep playing - Soccer players, who so obviously know how to strike exacting blows on precise pressure points, that when one is merely bumped he goes down like he was shot, then rolls around screaming in pain for three minutes, waits for the stretcher guys to come out, then gets back up and keeps playing. Soccer players are so good at delivering deceptively non-injurious-looking blows that Onyewu can apparently cause grave bodily harm by merely rubbing up against a Ghanian in the penalty box. To be able to catch such pinpoint fouls, FIFA has apparently hired off-duty NBA referees. |
