Ozzie Guillen

Is there a bigger douchebag in MLB?

Showing up a pitcher in front of the cameras was bad enough; now he's got another pitcher throwing at STL batters when his team is up 19-2.

All of that and his other antics are cute when his team is winning, but if they start to lose and he continues to act like an idiot, he'll be shipped.

That is all.

Yeah, well, maybe this is more wishful thinking than reality. I just like to believe the White Sox management might have at least some interest in having a positive face on their organization. When your manager is a foul mouthed head hunter your team isn't so family-friendly. So if Guillen doesn't string wins together, I really think they might show him the door.

I'm all for allowing pitchers to throw at hitters. But I think it needs to be done with a little bit of subtlty and class. Like, in the NHL, fights have their place, but they're not ordered by some maniacal deuchbag on the bench. The players know when dirty business is in order, and settle their scores appropriately.

Re: Ozzie Guillen

I'm a Sox fan, so clearly I'm biased at the moment.

First off, I'd rather have him than the clown they have on the north side.

Second, Ozzie is a breath of fresh air after Jerry Manuel. Jerry had some pretty powerful teams for his last 3 years and each year the team underperformed. Sure you can put some blame on the players, but some of that has to fall on the manager. I think a lot of Jerry's problem was handling the bullpen, something which Ozzie does pretty well (not afraid to use someone else to close, etc.)

Third, even if you don't agree with what he says or how he thinks the game should be played, he's honest about it. And entertaining.

On what planet was this ok, but what Ozzie does is out of control? I swear, for some reason I hear Barrett get lauded a bit too much on these boards for this incident. If it had been A.J. doing the same thing you'd be screaming for the death penalty. Compare A.J. to the crap Barrett has been pulling the last couple years (incidents with Oswalt last year, Dave Roberts of the Padres this year and the Pierzynski incident) and tell me which of the two is the biggest douchebag. If you still say A.J., you're not looking objectively.

Hit our people, we'll hit yours. That's been going on in baseball since the beginning. Perhaps you need to examine why that's "out of control" when Guillen follows those guidelines but it's "just baseball" when 29 other managers do it.

People love to defend idiots by saying, "at least they speak their mind," or "at least he's honest." George Bush gets that defense a lot.

Of course we don't like phoney BS artists. But there's something to be said for some balance and tact. I don't think he should be given carte blanche just because he's honest.

I'm not going to spend too much time defending Barrett's actions. But a difference is that he picked the fight on his own. Also, I dislike AJ, so it was nice watching him catch one in the kisser.

In a subsequent post I said that I'm all for throwing at hitters. I agree it's part of the game. I don't like when the throwing is so blatantly ordered by the wacky manager. It should be done in a way that an 8 year old kid would just assume the pitcher lost a little control, but adults will have to assume it was on purpose.

There's no way Padilla hit AJ twice on accident in Texas. I didn't see the game last night, so I can't really comment. I know Ponson's a bum, so it's plenty possible he had no control. Regardless, I don't think it's wrong for Ozzie to send a statement to the rest of the league. Nor should it be a big deal, this stuff is routine in baseball from the High School level up.

Re: Ozzie Guillen

Why are people shocked that David Riske, the guy who has a roster spot in the MLB because Tracey got sent down for NOT beaning someone, beaned someone?

As if LaRussa didn't expect one of his players to get hit. Two of Guillens guys got hit, and I'm pretty sure LaRussa is aware of the Guillen/Tracey fiasco that just occured less than 2 weeks ago.

This isn't a big deal to me. Now I didn't see the game, but if Sox players were stealing bases up by 10 runs, then they deserved to get beaned. I didn't see the game. I don't know the particulars.

Guillen will have a job as long as his team keeps playing like they do. These comments to Mariotti aren't enough to get him canned. This + his team losing? Yeah.

BTW, Mariotti is a massive toolbag, he kind of deserves to be called this and much worse. Ken "Hawk" Harrelson challenged Mariotti to a fistfight and Mariotti declined. He ran away from a 95 year old guy who says "He Gone."

Re: Ozzie Guillen

the Cards were down by two touchdowns and Ponson was meat.
he had no control and hit a guy.
Ozzie overreacted (big surprise) and started hollering at Ponson from the dugout. This is quite ironic considering Ozzie got all over Garner in the past for talking directly to his players.
Next batter...Ponson hit on a 1-2 count. Ponson's reaction was that he didn't mean it. LaRussa went out and pulled Ponson to clearly send the message that nothing was intended. Ozzie still had a guy plunked the next inning.

Why? Because Ozzie is a small human being with self-esteem issues.

When one team is involved over and over again, well....

Ozzie, the douche, speaks:
[ QUOTE ]
"If Ponson says he is not hitting them on purpose, we believe it," Guillen said. "And I don't believe Riske hit anybody on purpose either."

[/ QUOTE ]

whatever

Here was the situation

The Cards are down 14-2 in the sixth (another great Mulder outing).

Ponson is on the mound and has already given up 4 hits and the bases are still loaded. Ponson is upset about being moved to bullpen and has vocalized it. However, it is because he has been marginal at best in his outings struggling with his control and putting stuff on the ball.

He hits Brian Anderson, who had done little of the Sox damage. Ozzie goes nuts and starts hollering from the dugout at Ponson. Who knows why? He was probably bored from pounding the Cards so bad and needed something to get his blood going again.
Then, Ponson hits Ozuna on a 2 strike pitch. Ozzie gets near ballistic and blows everything out of proportion. Even the umpires, who issued a warning on the first hit batter, did not throw Ponson out because they realized it was ridiculous to think he was purposefully hitting batters. Ozzie, with his little baseball sense, cannot figure that out of course.
LaRussa, after Ozzie's confrontation with the umpires, goes out and pulls Ponson to make it clear the Cards are sending no messages and just want to get the hell out of this jopke of a game they have played so far.

Ozzie has Duncan hit the next half inning.

so, bases loaded down 14-2, Ozzie thinks Ponson is going after Brian Anderson and Pablo Ozuna after giving up multiple base hits. WTF indeed?
