Side Games at the Rio

Can anyone advise what side games will be spread? I am mostly interested in any limit games up to 40/80 (especially Triple Draw, Badugi, and rotation as well as Hold'em) and PLO. I'll be out there to see a UFC match, might as well spread a little WSOP love!

Edit by Lloyd: Removed dates from title to make post relevant to entire WSOP

I remember seeing about any type of game you want to play. Saw a good amount of lowball triple draw 300/600. Saw stud, razz, PLO...don't know if you can dictate stakes, b/c I only played 4/8, 10/20 or 1/2 NL.

Re: Side Games - July 7-10

Last year there was a 20/40 PLO/PLTD game at the Rio in June. I posted a trip report about it somewhere (about my feelings when I realized the dealer couldn't speak english, had never dealt pot limit, and had never heard of lowball).

I think that the only badugi I saw was down town. We tried to start a game at the Belagio, but they told us it wasn't on the 'approved' list.

What is the rake/time charge? Are there best times to find a specific variant? Can you request a game be added to the board?

Re: Side Games at the Rio

I went last year and played mostly 20/40 limit. The games were decent, not as good as the Bellagio 30/60 though.

The next limit up was 50/100 which was usually shorthanded, though I was there only during the very early events, so it may be more crowded later.

The rake was decent for the 20/40, very close to the Mirage game to give you an idea. Max $4 for very big pots. Not sure if they do time or rake for the 50/100. One of the big obstacles was lack of $10 chips, not sure if they have those this year.

Edit: Didn't play anything other than Hold 'em.

Are you sure on this? I played a Limit WSOP event last year and played a cash side game on one day there and I could have swore I played 40/80 or 30/60.
I do remember though that there was no $10 chips in the game. Was mix of greens and reds.

Raymer was playing a "rainbow" side cash game with Ted Forrest and others - (300-600 I think) in one of the Cardplayer interviews at last years WSOP. They had to call it that cause "Badugi" wasn't allowed.

And yes, satellites are running in full force...a friend pre-registered yesterday for two events and said it was very busy.

I'm fairly sure about this. I played the $1500 LHE (#3 or #4 I think). I generally played 30/60 live at the time, and I would have played that if they had a game. It's possible they changed it after I left. I do remember seeing a 50/100 game.

Are there any 1/2 tables? I have a friend that is new and wants to play but i would rather steer him to a 1/2 table to help out his bankroll. I thought a 1/2 table might be a little better for him so he can get his feet wet. Any 5/10 goin yet

excellent field of game choices, but I'm surprised the bigger limit games and rotations games aren't on that list, I expected a 100/200 or a 60/120. Now I have to decide if I should get the poker rate at Wynn/Bellagio, or go somewhere closer to Rio and just play non-stop there, I fly in next week.

People are too lazy to move their money out of their Bellagio boxes.

I'm actually surprised the Shieky game is there - or maybe I shouldn't be since they're the only big cash game at Caesars.

Wynn, Venetian, and Caesars are all dead with no action above 2-5 NL (except wynn that had a single rocky 5-10)

Bellagio is running full spread with 4 10-20 NL's and a 25-50, also lots of 100-200 150-300 and up in limit

they had about 9 2/5NL games (played for awhile, game was really nitty)

about 6-7 5/10NL games

Pot Limit Omaha (I think it was 2/5 blind pot limit game)

I heard 100/200 Limit and 25/50NL being called as I was playing

but seriously, what a fucing mad house, wall to wall people, very disorganized...I didn't put my name on the list, I just waited on the side and when they called a name and nobody came forward I ran up there all out of breath and just said that was me (old trick from the commerce)

list for 2/5NL was about 30 deep when I arrived

list for 5/10NL was about 20 deep

1/4 of the room was running live satellites...$65 or so buy in all the way up to the $1060s for the 10K chip

anyway, will be going back tomorrow night, hopefully more action in the NL games since its the official donkament event tomorrow

what else, oh yea, I got kicked out for talking on cell phone during cash game...no cell phones and they're enforcing it

the walk from self park is kinda nightmare-ish from the self park to the room, you basically have to walk in a big U and the valet was full when I showed up around 9pm

dealers seemed overwhelmed and were dealing slow which lead to incompetence...they seemed very flustered

lists were all hand-written on whiteboard which added to more confusion

also it is pretty bright in the room, bring some sunglasses if you don't like obnoxious neon lamps

as far as limit, I saw lists for 20/40 and 40/80

i don't think I've ever seen that many poker players jammed into such a small space at one time

sensory overload

as far as side games elsewhere...

I showed to the bellagio at midnight, they had 2 5/10NL games

6 2/5NL games

multiple 10/20NL games...

the room was packed at the B at 12am...every table in use, but by 3am it was slowing up quickly

anyway, will be going back tomorrow night, hopefully more action in the NL games since its the official donkament event tomorrow

OK so cliff notes re side games @ the RIO

PROS:

-Lots of games, large lists make for very many games and lots of tables for use...
-Willingness to spread mostly anything
-Abundance of dealers

CONS:

-Dealer issues...flustered and lethargic (not many hands/down)
-Very long lists
-Massive crowds/noise
-Games seem nitty

also, min buy in for 2/5NL $100 max $500
not sure what 5/10NL buy in is maxed at but there were lots of $$$ on the 5/10NL tables so I think they were more lax with the max buy in rule

I'll post an update again tomorrow, I plan to put in more than just a few hours.

don't go in the garage, go all the way around by the convention entrance. 40/80 was either v good or v [censored] tonight, 100/200 I have no idea how it was. 25/50 plo ran for a bit, some 25/50 nl was there. 3 capped @ 500 2/5 plo games, wtf. Cap = rigged.

I think Surf figured that out (couldn't tell for sure). But his reference to the long U walk sounded to me like he hadda park way the hell out and walk to the Pavilion entrance, and then walk all the way back down the interior hallway the way he came to the Amazon room.

They need an entrance closer to the Amazon room! There may be one, but nothing looks inviting.

When it's busy you end up having to park out north or far east beyond where it shows Expo Loading Dock 2 in that diagram, walk south to the Pavilion Patio and enter through the Miranda Patio. Then hike right back to the Amazon room.

Lemme in that door just west of the Expo Loading Dock 2 on the east side of the conference building.

A floor person basically told me to do the same thing when I complained. It was a totally rediculous scene. It took an hour to get into a game (I didn't follow the FP's advice).

I finally quit after 30 minutes because the game took forever to deal and there were 3 open seats despite a list a mile long. Then I had to get on a line to cash out my chips. The game wasn't even that good. I was playing 2-5. Three stacks at the table had about 100 or less.

I am not going back there to play cash games -- at least not for a few weeks. I can't believe the other rooms won't pick up the pace. Why in the world would you play cash at the Rio unless you're waiting for a buddy to get out of a tournament? If you play at Bellagio it's nicer with better drink service. The Venetian gives you $3 an hour with much better drink service. The Wynn gives you better comps too. Even MGM has comps.

Bottom-line: Unless it turns out the games are the juiciest in the world, I wouldn't play there. Too much of a zoo.

Also, I would feel VERY uncomfortable leaving chips at the table there. The turnover of dealers staff and players is so high that I would imagine the Rio is a chip thief's paradise.

in all honesty, if you saw how disorganized and what a zoo it was, you'd probably think of doing the same (unfortunately my ID is a big part of me)...minimal floormen to call out cashgame open seats, easily the wait would've been 1 hour or more

So, do you break in line at movie theaters? I guess the difference here is that it's unlikely anyone will notice you cheat. Or "not wait," as you might prefer to call it.

Now, if the set-up is as disorganized and chaotic as a few people have suggested, then I can't say I blame you for it...although you mention having done it at the Commerce too.

Bottom line is for each minute you save in doing this, other people have to wait that much longer in the aggregate.
