POLL: Greatest Stand-Up Comedian of All-Time

I was having a debate with a friend about who the greatest stand up comedian of all time is/was. This poll is going to include some of Comedy Central's Top 100 Comedians List so that everyone should be there that has some fame/talent. I'll also include Dane Cook as I believe that he is quite talented.

I'm not a huge Dane Cook fan, although I do see he has talent. He's just not really my style most of the time. He is however nowhere NEAR the greatest stand-up comedian of all-time.

Re: POLL: Greatest Stand-Up Comedian of All-Time

Carlin
Bruce
Rock
Pryor

(wish I coulda picked 4)

Anyone other than Carlin, Bruce, or Pryor winning this poll will probably show a simple lack of familiarity with the grandaddies of stand-up.

I agree- definitely not top 50 all-time or anything but he was added more because of his immense popularity across the US presently.

Bill Hicks - Not Even Close

There are some other great comics on this list, and some absolute abortions, but nobody was better than Hicks.

Dane Cook sucks, why is he even on the list?

Re: POLL: Greatest Stand-Up Comedian of All-Time

Dane Cook shouldn't be mentioned - if he's going to be, why isn't Andrew 'Dice' Clay up there? For 2 years, Dice was a stand-up God - he even got a [censored] movie out of it. Dane Cook is a big star right now, but let's see if he can do it for 20 years before we go putting him on a list with Carlin and Pryor.

Kevin James?

KEVIN JAMES?

Thank god you kept Steven Wright or Ellen Degeneres off the list, but gave us the king of queens.

Re: POLL: Greatest Stand-Up Comedian of All-Time

Can't believe all the negative comments on Dane Cook. Just because those old people were the first in their genre of comedy doesnt make them funny. I can sit through all those old guys material and not laugh once.

Are you guys basing these negative comments on his T.V Performances because they are weak compared to his other stuff.

#1. Dane Cook. Honorable mentions David Cross and Patton Oswalt.

Edit: Go to Danecook.com and it automatically starts playing stand-up. And dont go in w/ an Ahole attidude.

Re: POLL: Greatest Stand-Up Comedian of All-Time

Dude Kevin James' skit "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" is awesome. I haven't related to so much of a comedian's material ever before or since, which is why I laugh so hard whenever I see it. Just a personal opinion.

Not in the top 50? You are crazy. He is up there and will probably be mentioned with the greats when all is said and done.

I think Carlin is over-rated, always have and always will my list:

Richard Pryor
Bill Cosby

And the third and fourth is a tough one, Eddie Murphy? Steven Wright, Jamie Foxx?

Distinct lack of british talent there, and yet when it comes to comedy in general, we take some beating.

No Eddie Izzard? Bill Bailey? Peter Kay? Tommy Cooper?

Bill Hicks it is if we're going by this list.

Ah Bruce Bruce, suprisingly funny.

Dane Cook is pretty good, but there are several modern guys I think are much funnier. Chapelle, Dave Attell and Mitch Hedberg come to mind immediately.

Never could get in to Kinison, I voted for Murphy, Pryor, and Chris Rock.

Re: POLL: Greatest Stand-Up Comedian of All-Time

wrt Dane Cook, I just saw his Dave Attel/Vegas bit, which was the first time I'd really seen him. I'd heard about how great he supposedly is, so I was looking forward to it. Pretty disappointing. He was on SNL last night and I thought he was egregiously bad there, but I don't know how much of that was him and how much was SNL sucking.

To whomever said they could sit through Pryor's act without laughing, you're wrong. I went with Carlin, Pryor, and Cosby.

Almost everyone on the OP's list sucks. Old Cosby is gold, however.

Good modern comedians = Mitch Hedberg, Zack Galafrinakas, Brian Posehn, Dave Chappelle, Dave Attell, other misc

I voted for Carlin. I've seen him twice live, about 5-6 years apart. It was the exact same act, and just as funny the second time as it was the first.

Lewis Black was very funny as well, but Carlin is classic.

Redd Foxx for the win.

[/ QUOTE ]

Redd Foxx is the worst stand-up comic I've ever heard. I've spoken to more than one person who has seen him live, and they agree.

Note that I loved him in "Sanford" and "Harlem Nights". I also liked him in "Royal Family", or whatever that sitcom was called that he was doing when he died.

Kinison was my favorite, but I think Carlin's body of work would have to give him the "best" title.

Unless Andrew Dice Clay selling out stadiums counts for something.
