You need to see The Shop Around the Corner - the Jimmy Stewart movie that You've Got Mail is based on....so much better it's scary.

I would suggest you watch Casablanca first. It's more user friendly than The Big Sleep.

I always want to see old movie classics, but I never know which ones are truly good. I think I'll watch Casablanca soon. I tried watching Gone w/ the Wind. Holy [censored], that movie sucked so hard.

TB:

Yes, some old movies don't age very well, or they require a certain mindset to enjoy. I feel Casablanca holds up extremely well on its own.

For some movies it really helps to watch them with the commentary on the first time around. Citizen Kane features a great commentary by Ebert, for example.

Other movies require repeated viewings to fully enjoy. I realize that it is hard to re-watch a movie that bored you half to death, but many times I've been very positively surprised when giving a crappy old movie a second try and finding out it's much better than I initially thought.

I'll def. give these movies a shot. I used to watch movies w/ my nana. That's where I found The Long Hot Summer, My Fair Lady, Bye Bye Birdie etc... I remember really liking all of those.
