OOT pick my new golf driver

ok seems like poker players are going crazy with golf lately and I need to up my game. I haven't played in years and haven't kept up with the new clubs so I can't start a poll. I'm currently using a Titliest 975D, Stiff graffaloy, avg. 265, swing speed ~108mph the last time I was on the simulator(I'm sure old time golfers with know this club, but it's basically ancient). I love the control, distance isn't bad but I would love to be hitting 1 or 2 less clubs on my approach shot. Throw me some suggestions

You sound like a pretty bad-ass golfer for a guy who hasn't played in years.

I was gonna suggest the R7 460. I just bought it and the club totally kicks ass. I'm a 9 though so i dont really give a damn about shot shaping. This thing hits the ball far as hell and ridiculously straight. I gained 15 yards off the tee from my old launcher when i bought it.

You seem like the type who would want a bit more of a players club though. My cousin is a scratch golfer and he swears by the taylormade quad tour edition

Get the Nike SasQuatch. It's awesomely made and very easy to hit. I got one a few weeks ago and love it.

Ping G5. It's fantastic and a good bit cheaper than other drivers comparable in performance.

Re: OOT pick my new golf driver

Go to a fitting and get fit. Get the right loft and shaft combo for you. Ping, titleist, nike, whatever. Try to hit some balls with them outside and see what works. Brand differences are so minor compared to the fit. And since all clubs now look bad and don't have much feel, what is the difference? You need a modern club to use the rancid new balls, so get some. Just get fit, that is where you can most take advantage of the equipment. At 108 MPH swing speed you won't get the disproportionate jumps in distance the high swing speed players get with the new balls, but you will get the most out of what you have. And since it is hard to curve the new balls off the new drivers, you just line up and bonk it out there. Every ball is straight so just maximize what you can do with the club.

From my experience you can't really take a reccomendation on any kind of club. Go hit a bunch of them and pick the one you like the most, and sets up the best for you. Take advice from a club maker about what shaft to put in it as that has just as much impact as the club head. Personally I like Titleist drivers and my last 4 have been the D, J and 2 K's. But get something up to date, not the D!

I was using my old driver the other day and hitting around 280 sometimes 300. The guy I was with had a new Taylor Made R7, and asked me if I would use it on the 18th. My natural slice somehow magically disappeared and of the 5 shots I hit, none was less than 320, one of them ending up pin high, 10 yards to the right of the 340 yard hole. It's $650 apparently, but if I can get to a test range with that club, I'm probably spending anything they want me to.

have balls really changed that much? What's a good one out there now? I'm using a Pro V1, precept ev or the nike double C distance. I don't work the ball much so straight and long is good but nothing like the top flight rocks.

yes, balls have changed a lot in the last few years. the cores are way different and don't compress the same as they did. They don't spin as much. They also react differently when struck by high swing speeds. The longest players benefit more than not so long players. It used to be a linear progression in terms of added distance with added swing speed. No longer. Distance increases go more to longer players. The USGA slightly improved testing, but not really. They had a test lined up to combat optimization but didn't use it. So the balls go a long way at the usga launch conditions. When pros with high swing speeds launch them they go really far. And hitting a new ball with an old persimmon driver is miserable. Good players have trouble with that. With an old persimmon you would rather have a high spin ball like an old balata. Sidespin is greater, but you can get the thing airborne. Anyway, the new balls are way different and have negatively impacted the game, but unless and until the usga restores the game, get the new clubs to hit the new balls with. Regular players don't benefit as much, but do get to pay more to play since new golf courses seem to be 7500 yard things with a lot of expensive cart paths.

Been using Bridgestone e6 recently and for a mid-priced ball it's great. Can spin the ball out of the rough and it flys long and straight. Used to use Nike One and I like thesde better. Can't go wrong with ProV1's, but $39.99 vs $24.99 a dozen makes me lean towards the Bridgestone.

For drivers you really have to go to a place that can fit you. More personal preference and swing then any one brand.

Get on a sim again for sure. If your spin rate is high try the Cleveland HiBore. If your spin is low try the Cleveland Comp. I think ideal numbers are spin 2200-2800rpm, luanch 12-14 degrees and ball speed 1.5 times your swing speed. The cally Fusion is really long but sounds like you are hitting a ball with an aluminum bat. The 905r is a sweet club but it is a very high spin club. The pings and TM's are really nice. FWIW 975D was one of the best drivers ever but you will gain if you get one of the newer drivers fitted properly.

As far as balls same deal. If you have high spin #'s go with the prov1x. If you have low spin go with the prov1. Bridgestone's ball is for low spin players and the new Cally ball is supposed to be really good also(HX i think).

Shafts are better now also. The green one (NV i think) is pretty popular right now and should fit nicely with your club speed. The blue one (grafalloy) sucks IMO but some people swear by it. The yellow and grey one (V2) is really good also.

Cleaveland Launcher Comp
.......

That's my suggestion but you better call around and find a driving range that lets you hit clubs on the range.

To all who are recommending a session on the launch monitor:

Have you typically done this at Golfsmith or somewhere similar?

I've hit clubs in the nets before, mostly just trying out a demo here and there, but I was wondering how well the performance on the indoor monitor translates to an actual golf setting?

This is a good suggestion. Be sure to compare it to the Launcher Comp. I hit this club a mile and it's about $150 cheaper.

Re: OOT pick my new golf driver

I had bad luck with the indoor thing. Better luck at an outdoor fitting where different loft and shaft combinations could be used. I had a mixed up bunch of stuff that sort of worked and didn't work together. So when Ping came to my club for a demo day I went and demod drivers and fairway woods and got stuff that worked and worked together better through the bag. I don't care that much about brand. Ping seems to do more fitting and I am in a remote area. In a bigger place you get more choice, but the loft and shaft combination is more important than the brand IMO. I don't know if I'd get ping woods again if I had a choice of fitting with all kinds of clubs. They are fine, but so are the other brands. Fit is key and seeing how a ball comes off in real life is better than the nets and the indoor thing. Might depend on who does it too.

It depends on who is doing it. I was fitted outside with prov1's by someone i really trust. Really try to get fitted outside if anyone in your area does this. I have heard of some retail stores jacking with the results on indoor monitors in order to sell you a club but i'm pretty sure this isn't the norm. Also getting the #'s right may not be exactly what you want. You may prefer to hit the ball higher or lower than what some retail guy tells you you should be hitting and seeing the flight of the ball outdoors always helps.

Re: OOT pick my new golf driver

Hrm. I was actually at one of the courses around here for the Ping demo day, but was just hanging out while my fiancee was getting fitted for irons. Oh well...we're going to try and take a lesson or two sometime after July 4th, so maybe I'll wait until the instructor tells me to completely change my swing before making my next equipment purchase.

I'm in kind of a weird place right now, as I'm pretty happy with my irons distance-wise, not the prototype OOT bomber, but I'm a 15.6 and typical 6I ball flight is high, slight draw, and 150-155 carry.

However, my driver ball flight is way too high, IMO, and with flat, no-wind conditions, a "normal" shot will only fly around 210-220, and the ball looks like I hit it with a damned 8I or something.

If you're in Vegas, Callaway has a very nice center nearby. Maybe a Roger Dunns golf center too but I don't think their machines are that advanced. Taylor Made used to have a center near San Diego that was really high tech. Seems like equipment has made some big gains the last few years. I hit a few new drivers last night and today, they're longer but nothing that made me go, WOW this is much better than my 975D. The 2 ball putters were the most impressive club I tried.
