What kind of career do you have?

Do you enjoy doing what you do for a living? As for me, I'm currently a software developer and considering quitting and going back to college for a change in career.

Haha funny you mention that.. i was a code monkey before I decided to try teaching.... and while teaching isn't the most fantastic job in the world, compared to coding, it is.

haha, out of necessity, for starters. I just quit my coding job, without anything lined up or anything. Yea, it wasn't the brightest move in the book, but everythign worked out ok. I just sent my resume to high schools around my area, and during the summer (when schools typically are hiring for the upcoming school year), one of the schools contacted me, I interviewed, and was offered the job literally 2 hours after I interviewed.

These days though, with some recent Bush legislation, it's pretty much impossible (unless you're in the ghettoest of ghettoes) to start teaching without already having a credential.

Re: What kind of career do you have?

I'm assuming you have a Computer Science (or equiv.) degree? There is alot more in the IT field then being a software developer. Maybe instead of going back to college you give something else a shot:

- Network Engineer
- Systems Engineer
- Database Administrator
- Systems Administrator
- Analyst

Project Manager for a Credit Card Company
Event Manager for a gaming company
Assistant to a pro poker player

I like all of my jobs, but in all three cases its because of the company/people I work with, NOT the job itself. Hate the job itself.

yea, when I started i didn't have a credential. math/science teachers are always in demand though, so if you have a good sciences background and a teaching credential, you'll always be able to find a job fairly easily somewhere.

Completely agree. When my boss told me to code so and so, I did it. But the headaches started when they told me to code something, and I'd do it, then they'd say 'no wait, that's not really what i wanted, do this instead.', so I'd have to basically redo everything, then they'd make more stupid changes, and so on and so on.

Yeah 4 year CS degree. Coding is very difficult for me, I'm not very logical. Weird how I got a degree in something like CS.

Customer Service / Administration. I hate my job. I want to go back to school, but would have to do it at night and probably all online because my job blows and wont give me time to get anywhere. I kind of have a few things in mind: psychology / criminal justice. But I dont want to go back unless I know for sure. I think I should just jump in and take a class, any class to get back into the swing of things.

I have no idea what I want to do with my life. I'm slightly concerned because I feel I should have some idea by now.

I'm an independent IT consultant. Absolutely love it. Great hourly pay and I am (was) able to take a LOT of time off between contracts. Much better than the decade I spent as a salaried IT developer for a large corporation (50-70 hour weeks).

Sadly, due to offshoring and preferred-vendor contracts (which employ a lot of people for very low rates) good paying jobs are hard to find. So, it looks like i'll be going back to one of those 'regular' full-time jobs as it provides extra benefits (medical, profit-sharing, paid vacations/holidays/sickdays...).

Can you to stick with your job and take night classes? This would be great if your company pays or partially reimburses your tuition. This may also give you the opportunity to do a parallel transfer w/in your company (HR, Accounting, training, legal, maintenence, fitness center, cafeteria...) depending on what you choose as your new career.

In a week, it'll be 5 years doing product development in the cosmetics industry. I do have a good time playing around and making different kinds of hair color. Marketing can usually kiss my ass, but sometimes they're okay.

There is going to be a new opening that im applying for so hopefully my new job title will be program manager of grassroots marketing. If I get the job it should be a nice step up for me. Wish me luck...

Re: What kind of career do you have?

I've been writing software, always in C/C++, for like ~13 years now, 7 years in the games industry. The pay is decent I guess, like 70s (albeit in California/Hawaii).

However, I'm still doing the same 'level' of work I was doing 10 years ago and my career has gone nowhere. Junior-ish stuff, like user interfaces, application-level code, etc. I'm generic programmer cog: jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none -- A little bit of network here, graphics there, AI here, database there, with no hardcore delving into any particular subfield, and no real proficiency with any technology.

This is likely more my fault than my profession's, however. I am likely just too lazy, as even in school I did just enough to get by on natural genius, rather than put in serious effort to get ahead or improve myself. Like, I'll buy a book on 3D rendering techniques, or AI programming, but then never get around to reading it.

If I could go back in time, I think I would try to be a derivitives trader or something of that nature.
