Most disturbing scene in a movie
And by disturbing, I don't necessarily mean graphic. A scene that just hits you in the guts and just bothers you.
For me, it's the scene near the beginning of Regarding Henry in the convenience store, where Harrison Ford gets shot smack in the middle of the forehead, pauses, utters "I just wanted a pack of cigarettes" and then collapses. It almost seemed too real. |
Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
The knife scene in Saving Private Ryan. I simply cant watch it.
|
Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
In the same movie, when Tom Hanks mutters "earn this." Clearly, we haven't.
|
Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
Basically, the entire reactor accident sequence of the movie K-19. That was, by far, the most disturbing thing I have ever watched on film. Both because it really happened and because I could envision myself in the very same situation.
|
Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
Easily the curbing scene in "Amercian History X".
|
Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
The scene in "The descent" where one of them breaks her leg. Tough to watch.
The opening scene of Saw 2. Anything going near the eyes I can't take. It worries me that the curb-stomp in AHX has never bothered me that much. |
Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
Another good one is in "Misery" where she breaks his leg.
Or in "Payback" where they break his toes. |

The knife scene in Saving Private Ryan. I simply cant watch it. [/ QUOTE ] I feel the same way about the scene where the medic gets shot and they make a futile effort to save him. Actually leave the room during that scene. |

Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
The first scene in Amores Perros with the dying dog is tough to watch for me.
|
Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
Saw two movies with a girlfriend that were way uncomfortable to watch...that crappy John Travolta movie set on a military base with James Wood where the chick gets gangraped by her fellow soldiers.
And the rape scene from Irreversable. |

Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
Lord of War has a very brief scene where men and few boys aged 7 or so are lined up and shot. the children part was disturbing.
there is a machete atttack in the same movie that is not graphic but still disturbing. |
Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
The movie Sophie's Choice. When she is given the ultimatum by a Nazi soldier to choose.
"You may keep one of your children. The other one will have to go. Which one will you keep?" I did not watch the scene-I had already left the room. |
Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
In "City of God" where the little kid is forced to shoot his friend.
End of "Goodfellas" when Pesci is beaten with baseball bats. |

Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
For me it was the road traffic accident in "Wild at Heart". IFIRC, The dying girl is worried that her mum is going to be pissed off with her becuase she lost her purse or something.
The reason I find it so disturbing is that it is utterly believable, and something that is really very realistic to all of us. Last week, a friend of someone I work with was killed in an RTA. 24yo girl who just graduated in medicine. Some [censored] speeds through a junction and hits her side of the car sraight on. Really sad & disturbing. That scene just reflects a pretty realistic fear, unlike most movie scenes. Although the scene in "The descent" (i loved that film) where she breaks her leg was pretty nasty -- my girlfriend actually ran out of the room and puked!!!!! |

the beating of the [censored] up private in Full Metal jacket, I think becuae it would of been very likely that I would have been a [censored] up in the Army.

Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
Anyone who has seen 'The Dentist' with Corbin Bernsen is probably greatly disturbed by ever hearing a drill again.

I agree with Xadrez: City of God, scene with the little kids... right up there as far as disturbing goes. I jumped out of my seat and ran into the kitchen it was so awful. I doubt you'd see anything like that in American film. |
Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
There is a ten minute single-shot rape scene in the movie Irreversible that makes every scene mentioned so far look like the care bear christmas special. Half the theater walked out when I saw it. The movie, while incredibly violent and disturbing, is actually pretty good.

I loved Gasper Noe's first film though. |
Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
Kathy Bates' nude scene in At Play in the Field of the Lords. Yikes.
Seriously? Okay, the rape scene in Man Bites Dog. I almost walked out. |
Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
I can't believe no one has mentioned "The Passion of the Christ", yet.
|
Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
This is from IMDB's trivia for Irreversible:
[ QUOTE ] The first 30 minutes of the film has a background noise with a frequency of 28Hz (low frequency, almost inaudible), similar to the noise produced by an earthquake. In humans, it causes nausea, sickness and vertigo. It was the main cause of people walking out of the theaters during the first part of the film in places like Cannes and San Sebastian. In fact, it was added with the purpose of getting this reaction [/ QUOTE ] Did anybody feel really funny during the first half hour? I apologize for the mini-jack, but I am curious. |
Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
Any rape scene for me is pretty awful.
Has anyone seen Cannibal Holocaust? I almost puked during the scene where he stabs the muskrat and stopped there. Apparently there's also rape, turtles getting their heads cut off, and a pile of dead buried babies? |
Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
I don't know if this counts as disturbing... but the scene in Swingers where Mike calls the coffee shop girl like 10 times is really hard to watch.

Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
The scene that opens Texas Chainsaw Massacre in the van.
Pasolini's Salo, which cleared out at least 90% of the audience by the end. Impossible to pick out one scene. I'm not sure I could sit through this one again, but I think it's a must see film. The shot of the mound of human hair in Resnais' Night and Fog affects me, in some ways, much more than the more graphic footage in the film. |

I think the point of the whole film was simply to disturb you. Which I was, but I've seen worse depravity party hoping on a Saturday night. |
Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
I have read two list on here recently, one about worst on screen betting and now most disturbing moment and no one mentioned "Scum" in either of them WTF. If underage gay gang rape isn’t disturbing I don’t know what is, they don’t even grease him up first the dirty b*stards.

Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
2 I'd choose are already gone; the 'hand or foot' scene in City of God, and the scourging of Jesus in Passion of the Christ.
I'd also add the whole Frank getting to the apartment the first time in Blue Velvet, that freaks me out some every time I see it, still. And also the bit near the end of Chinatown where the old guy pulls his granddaughter away - that makes me want to punch someone. And another that bothers me a lot, which I think is highly variable depending on how you feel by the end of the film, if the end of 'Naked' where Johnny is just walking away from it all. I can see a lot of people not being bothered by it a bit - it seems a natural conclusion to the film - but it bothers the hell out me. |

Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
Two that come to mind .
Requiem for a Dream. When Jared Leto's character shoots up into that gangrenous, open sore. The Marathon Man. When Laurence Olivier's character tortures Dustin Hoffman by drilling his teeth without anaesthesia. Is it safe? |

Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
Have to agree with the Saving Private Ryan's knifing scene. Possibly the most disturbing and realistic acting job, watching someones life ebb away in front of you.
Generally the more graphic scenes I do not find as disturbing as implied scenes. Gross or scary <> disturbing (for me). |
Re: Most disturbing scene in a movie
Bastard out of Carolina - the rape scene. I know this is the quiet zone but I really don't want to elaborate for anyone who hasn't seen it. It's disturbing.
