What would you do if you won $47 Million?
 

This isn't your typical thread. We've all seen these types of threads.

What I'm interested in, is what would you do in the 1-3 days immediately following your claim? Let's say you win $47Million, and assume you are on TV for whatever reason. It's plastered all over the media. People know your face, and name, and now, your net worth. What would you do in the immediate few days following your win?

I think the first thing I would do is send an email to my family and friends explaining that I (along with my gf) will be leaving the country immediately and will not inform them of where I'm going. I would drop my apartment key with one of my family members and let them ride the lease out if they wish.

In the email to my family I would explain that I feel obligated to help them financially, and that, to keep things fair, each will enjoy a $10K yearly stipend with which they can do what they please. No more. No less. It will be their duty to ration the funds. I will make it clear that they cannot expect to look to me for a loan. If I do decide to give out a loan, it will be for a smallish fee, perhaps prime. I would charge all individuals the exact same amount on their loan. No more. No less.

I would inform my friends that I will not be giving them a stipend, but that I would gladly loan them money under certain terms. Also, I would not tell them this, but I would make it a point to spend fairly freely around them. They would definitely benefit from being in my presence.

Anyway, I would leave the country that night with my girlfriend and any and all valuables (sentimental, not necessarily financial). Where would I go? Not sure. Probably take a month-long vacation of various countries. The main point would be to get out of the spotlight (just to be safe). I will contact family and friends from overseas and inform them of when I will be coming back to the States to visit. Or maybe I don't contact them. Not sure. Maybe I just come back without notice for a week or so. At that point, I would take care of whatever other loose ends I have.

Then I would leave again and probably live in another country for about a year. Not hotel-to-hotel, but actually purchase a place of course. Coming back to visit perhaps once or twice in that time period. After the 1 year I think I would decide on a permanent place in the States to make residency.

It's before. This shouldn't matter.

The point is I want to see what people actually do the following couple days. Do you just stay put? I think I'd be paranoid for a while. I'd want to leave the country asap.

What you do with the money isn't important right now, I just want to see how you would handle yourself and your wife/kids etc. if applicable.

First, I would put $30M in savings (I would do all af my investing after I get back from the trip outlined below). Second, I quit my job.

I would then send my fiancee and her sister to the European country of her choice. I would then gather up 2 friends to hit Vegas with for a week. After that, my friends get on a plane back home and I get on a plane to meet my fiancee in Europe. We tour all the big cities in Europe and eventually come back home.

I would work with my financial advisor to invest money in different places. Then I would begin opening my guitar shop.

OK thats a little longer than the 3 days after, but it's pretty much exactly what I'd do.

your post assumes that everyone you know would all of a sudden have to feel grateful just to be in your presence. While in all likelihood they might well feel this way, its a sh*tty way to behave.

I think there are ways to avoid the spotlight besides just getting out of the country. I'd probly quit my job (if I had one), head to vegas for a bit to party, then travel for some indefinite period of time until I figured out something I wanted to do, but in the immediate period following the big score, there would be much more celebrating, and many fewer contracts/loans.

I don't consider $10K/year per family member "stingy". That's going to add up. And if they use it wisely, they should set themselves up in a nice spot.

i would pay off my parents mortgage/debt buy my mom and dad a car,

same for my sister

a few very nice gifts for close family members and friends
such as plasma tv's, computers, 500mW green laser pointers

and then tell them to not ask me for anymore money because it will be locked up in 10-year bonds.(not true but this way they think they cant ask me)

I'd line up a good financial planner. Within 24 hours my wife and me would be sipping umbrella drinks on a beach in Caribbean. I'd probably stay there 3 months or so. As we partied and enjoyed the sea, we'd be contemplating where we want houses. Probably 3. I'm currently thinking in the Caribbean, Montana mountains, and somewhere overseas. Maybe Greece or the Croatia area. Who knows. Fun to think about.

When I got past all that I would think about family, friends, and charity.

10k a year, you are a [censored] cheap, selfish, bastard. I also agree that I wouldnt write letters like im some kind of royalty. ridiculous. I dont know what Id do, but its not that. Id get my parents and grandparents a new house, my dad and mom would never have to work again, and my brothers would get their college taken care of. Id pay off all my close friends student loans, new cars for everyone, then Id buy a couple houses, a couple cars, and put the rest of my 30 million in the bank and earn interest. If you were my kid and gave me 10k a year, Id disown you, thats [censored] insulting.

You realize though that the hype wouldn't last very long. For instance, Damon Dash (CEO of roc-a-fella) probably has that much $, has been on TV, and I bet most people wouldn't recognize him. Even that is a bad example though, but I bet after a couple weeks you could walk down the street fine. A month tops.
