Would Only a Tool Drive a Dodge Viper?

There is a 92 Dodge Viper (with 11,000 miles) at a local dealer at only $36,000. Mrs. Utah and I looked at it this morning and it was in perfect shape. To me, it is about the coolest looking car in the world and I seriously want to buy it to replace my 150,000 mile MR2 Turbo.

Problem, Mrs. Utah says driving a car like that screams midlife crisis and it will make girls think that you are trying to overcome deficiencies elsewhere. That never occured to me and I didnt believe her. a bit ago, 2 of her girlfriends stopped by and I asked a simple question, "What would you think if you saw a guy drive by right now in a Dodge Viper?" Both of them responded without hesitation that it screamed midlife crisis and that the guy was trying to compensate for deficiencies.

Mrs. Utah and her two friends all agreed though that a Mercedes, BMW, or Porsche sports car would spark their interests a lot as it would signal class, sophistication, and wealth.

The problem is that I dont like any of those cars as much and I am not trying to signal anything. I just want a car that I love and that I love to look at. However, I dont want to be laughed at as I drive down the road.

So, are the 3 girls correct? Would only a tool drive a car like a viper and would the impression that the car gave off be a deal killer for purchasing it?

Just buy the car you want. You're already married, why the need to please women with your car purchase?

Polling three women who are friends(so obviously have similar interests and opinions) is hardly an average. Vipers kick ass.

Buy the Viper and a 10K Nissan or Toyota.

Drive the viper and when you go past women have Ms. Utah lift up her head.

While I think that guys who drive this car probably have small penises (penii?), I think you should drive the car you want.

let me get this straight

buying a car you like is being a tool

Buying a car to impress your wife and her friends isn't?
I know that point taken out of context a little bit

get the viper dude

Holy crap, your lady friends clearly don't understand quality engineering. I bet the only reason why they are hating on the car is because it's not european. Seriously buy a car magazine and read up on the car.

If someone says something like this to me I normally ask them if they think if Bose home audio is a high quality product. If they say yes, then I put them in the "your opinion on consumer products doesn't mean [censored]" category.

Re: Would Only a Tool Drive a Dodge Viper?

You guys and your cars...

He asked my opinion and and I gave my honest answer. I also think Corvettes and Ferraris scream midlife crisis or I am insecure, something along those lines. I am not speaking of the preformance of the car. Mercedes, BMW and Porsche, imo, are driven by men who are established and successful-its my perception and happened to be the perception of my two girlfriends(and we have never discussed this). Their responses were completely spontaneous. We all agreed that the Porsche is the car that would not make you look like a tool. If I saw a Viper driving down the street I would look at the car, but if I see a Porsche I would look at the car and the driver.

As long as I have known Utah his "dream car" has always been the 911 and he has come close several times to buying one but for some reason has not.

Re: Would Only a Tool Drive a Dodge Viper?

I don't understand why people want/think they can make accurate judgements like this. It really boils down to jealously/envy, because the cars ya'll are talking about are an absolute blast to drive.

On the M3 board where I'm a member, one of the members there also has a late model Porsche and described his trip to a local Best Buy. After leaving the store, he said there were like four people oogling around his car with some donk trying to explain something about it. As he approached his car (car was parked in a normal spot around other cars so oogler's didn't immediately know it was his) a girl staring at it says "the guy who drives this must be a pretentious prick". The owner thanked the guy for introducing his car, and told the girl he's no different than any other driver out there, and quietly drove off.

There are a lot of ignorant people out there. God forbid the people who've worked hard for their [censored] should ever be able to enjoy the life they've created for themselves.

Indeed. I'm not into cars at all, but Viper is just so uniquely beauftiful to me, I'll own one one day.

OP, I'll envy you if you buy one. Can't say that for any other car.

Yup, that was going to be my post. [censored] everyone else, you know what you like, the Viper is a sweet car, buy it. Now, for an even better thread:

If you were the guy driving that porsche, and overheard some cum guzzler say that, how would you handle it?

I have not had the luxury of driving a fun car since my 240Z some three decades ago. I have succumbed to function over form.
the Viper has a uniquely beautiful form, if I were to return to driving for fun, it would be my choice.
I would put the over/under at three weeks before I lost my license however. It's a felony to be caught driving double the speed limit on the highway isn't it?

Re: Would Only a Tool Drive a Dodge Viper?

I also think the viper looks cool.

sidenote. there's one subtle problem--dilemma, actually-- with the porsche, which is pronouncing the name. if you pronounce it as one syllable as is the norm, you look like an ignoramus who probably only bought the car because it's expensive. however if you pronounce it as 2 syllables, like its actual name that the people who designed and made it gave to it, some will think you're pretentious.

Yeah, no kidding. I dunno why people get all hard for porsches around here. I have driven them all except the GT2 and literally the only cool one was the 911 *Turbo* (and obv the GT3). I'd much rather drive something like a G35 than a C4 or god forbid, a boxster.

The souped up Volkswagon comment was meant as a joke. Porsche makes some of the best engineered cars on the road.
Style-wise I think they lack imagination and innovation and basically suck but that's a matter of taste.

Performance-wise the 911 and Viper are identical and I would take the Viper. For me its not even close.

P.S. Buy American

I don't think it makes you a tool but I like your choice on the MR2 turbo, I've got one myself.

Utah 06-03-2006 04:33 PM

Re: Would Only a Tool Drive a Dodge Viper?

I love everything about the MR2 Turbo - style, performance, comfort, mid-engine design, etc. I have had the car for almost 10 years now and I never bought a Porsche or another car for the simple reason that I couldnt imagine anything better than the MR2. I almost bought a WRX last summer and I had the keys in hand. But, I didnt get it because even if it was blistering fast I didnt like it as much as the car I had. Sadly though, at 150,000 miles the car is just getting really old.

The only car that I have come across that I think I can like more is the Dodge Viper. It is just so freakin captivating - the style and sheer audacity of it. It was hard to walk out of the dealership this morning because I was just gawking at it.

What year MR2 do you have and how many miles?

Re: Would Only a Tool Drive a Dodge Viper?

Not buying a Viper because your wife and girlfriends tell you it screams midlife crisis, and other deficencies would make you a HUGE TOOL.

Edit:

This comment is bothersome, it's so wrong and so judgemental on so many ways. Ever think that maybe, just maybe some people are attracted to the looks and performance of the car, and that it probably has NOTHING to do with insecurity?

So if a woman purchases a Coach handbag that makes her a materialistic and arrogant person? Afterall, you're spending $1K on a purse...

[/ QUOTE ]

Whatever category? Are you sure about that? I really would like to know where you get your info.

The 2006 Viper smokes a 2007 porsche 911 in acceleration and it's not close. If you match them dollar for dollar the Porsche can't compare to the Viper. Even if you took the most expensive porsche 911 and compared it to the Dodge Viper SRT10 Venom 1000 Twin Turbo it still takes it almost TWICE as long to get to 60 mph. If you go even further and take the fastest porsche the 962 Le Mans which no woman would let her husband drive on the streets (because it is somewhat like a formula 1 car) it still takes a full second longer to reach 60 mph. No porsche, of any kind and any price, can match the dodge viper in acceleration.

The dodge viper also has significantly bigger tires than the Porsche 911. If are going to drive at high speeds that is a huge plus.

The viper also has a much larger wheelbase. Larger wheel base means larger turning radius (-EV for city driving) but it also means a much more stable and smoother ride at high speeds. Seriously, they are completely different animals.

Heck, if you live in LA the Viper gives off about 12 lbs of smog forming pollution per 15K miles vs the Porsche's 40. Not that people care about such things but I'm trying to prove a point.

Another bonus is that if you are tall like me, the viper is a much more comfortable vehicle to sit in.

So, what were you saying about any category?

Dollar for dollar, the SRT-10 Vipers, and the new LS7 z06's are the best performing cars for the money. Pretty much spot on, Wacki.

Re: Would Only a Tool Drive a Dodge Viper?

what about checking the rest of the stuff in the post that you didn't bold? the viper is more powerful (I said that in the post) but that's it.

EDIT: being american you probably have no idea who Jeremy Clarkson is but here is his review anyway because I share his opinion about the car.
