Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
Someone builds an optical portal that allows you to see a vision of your own life in the future (it's essentialy a crystal ball that shows a randomly selected image of what your life will be like in twenty years). You can only see into this portal for thirty seconds. When you finally peer into the crystal, you see yourself in a living room, two decades older than you are today. You are watching a Canadian football game and you are extremely happy. You are wearing a CFL jersey,. Your chair is surrounded by books and magazines that promote the Canadian Football League, and ther are CFL pennants covering your walls. You are alone in the room, but you are gleefully muttering about historcal moments in Canadian football history. It becomes clear that- for some unknown reason- you have become obsessed with Canadian football. And this future is static and absolute; no matter what you do, this future will happen. The optical portal is never wrong. This destiny cannot be changed.
The next day, you are flipping through television channels and randomly come across a prseason CFL game between the Toronto Argonauts and the Sasakatchewan Roughriders. Knowing your inveitable future, do you know watch it? |
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
Yes
|
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
Dids,
What if the portal is only right because you say yes to this question? |
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
No
|
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
Nope. I'll avoid my demise as long as possible.
|
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
absolutely not
|
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
Shajen,
I had the same question. However, let us assume a non tricky manipulative portal. |
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
An inerrant destiny is a ridiculous concept. I won't watch the game out of spite.
|
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
Not unless I had money on it.
|
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
Dids,
in that case, screw that, I'll hold off as long as I can. I'm a stubborn ass. |
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
Wait, aren't all Canadian teams named the Roughriders?
|
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
If I don't like the CFL now, why would I watch? I don't see why the fact that I'll love it in 20 years should encourage me to be bored now.
Most of these questions suck. |
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
is ricky williams playing?

is ricky williams playing? [/ QUOTE ] Perfect. |
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
Why not? It mentions that the dude watching CFL is happy. I mean I'd rather watch NCAA football but if I'd be just as happy with CFL why not go for it?

Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
The line between insane and happy is often blurred and sometimes non existant.
|
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
I watch it so I can decide now if I want to kill myself or not.

Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
Whose to say the reason you are infatuated with it isnt because It overtakes the NFL in populariy or something of that nature and it becomes theeee Football league to watch...Im not going to force myself to watch a mediocre league now because Im going to love it in the future...

Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
No, because it doesn't interest me now. If it interests me twenty years from now, I'll probably have the game on tape in the future and can watch it as many times as I want.
Besides, it's preseason. Everyone knows Canadian football doesn't get interesting until October. ScottieK |
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
No, I wouldn't watch. From what the optical portal has told me, I'm guaranteed to be alive, happy, and reasonably well-off financially in 20 years. I think there would be better things to do with my 20 years of immortality than watching Canadian football. I can do that when I've gone crazy as a loon in 20 years.
|
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
The crystal ball can't be right if I kill myself. Which I'd immediately do.

Dids, I know I might be a bit of a hater, but can you honestly tell me you don't find the 23 Questions (both the concept and the questions themselves thus far) really gay? it wouldn't bother me so much if he didn't market them as "questions he asks a person before he can tell if he really loves them." come on.. the guy would have no friends if that were the case. I mean, look at the nga (above). |
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
Euro,
You are totally being a hater here, and making the same mistake many people stupider than you have made. Clearly he's kidding, and the absuridty of the statement is part of the punchline to the joke. You are smarter than this post and I am displeased with you. DISPLEASED. |
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
Dids, there's such a thing as a tedious joke.
|
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
Yes, but I'm Canadian so I'd be watching the game anyway.
|
Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
First, I would be really mad at myself for not having a Canadian Football Sports Almanac sitting on my lap that I could look through for 30 seconds.
Second, it's only a preseason game so I would probably skip it since I will have plenty of time to watch this stuff later. |

[/ QUOTE ] Dids, I don't think my opinion of the questions changes even though he is "kidding." this just means he thought, "haha it'll be funny if I say that I ask people these questions to determine their worth as a human being." that's still gay. the questions are just annoying in the way that some of Bill Simmons's material is. it's just easier to like Simmons because he doesn't resemble a pretentious hipster fgt. |

Re: Chuck Klosterman\'s 23 Questions #16 Canadian Football
Euro,
As always you're way the hell too concerned with image and inventing motivations for people. The point behind these questions is more that I think each question lends itself to a pretty interesting debate. I would think it's pretty apparently that's the point of the exercise, that these are just a framework designed to spark a conversation, and I wish people would focus more on the questions and spend less time bitching about the other stuff. |

[/ QUOTE ] Formal debates have moderators, conversations do not. You can't honestly throw an idea out for conversation, and then bitch about the conversation you get. If you want the responses limited or structured, restructure the questions as T/F or multiple choice. This is OOT, lest we forget. This is the last place in the world anyone should expect, let alone require, that a conversation stay on topic. |
