Ever kill an animal with your car?

I have an hour drive to and from work each day, and it's mostly through wooded areas.I have come close so many times, to nailing deer with my car. Fortunately, I have always been able to avoid barely contact.

The only animal I have killed so far, was a giant opposum. It was nasty, I am pretty sure I ran his head over. Bump-bump, bump-bump!

So, you guys ever run over any interesting animals with your car?

No interesting animals for me. But probably 3 squirrels, a chipmonk, and a few birds over the years.

I ran over a bunny once on the way to a game.... had a big night.

Now, the neighbors complain about the tracks I leave in their lawns

blinden,

It's a really long story, but I'll give the synopsis here:

Summer of 1992, around 11:30 at night, I had just dropped off my girlfriend a few minutes before at her parents house. I wasn't wearing a helmet. I was going about 65-70 or so when I saw a deer running at my headlight. I swerve to miss it, it swerves to hit me. Hits me betwen the forks and the gas tank. Bike shoots out from under me to the left, I go over the handlebars. At the time I was probably travelling around 60 mph. I tuck into a ball I guess, and roll down the highway for about 200 yards. When I came to a stop, I was standing.

The deer and the bike were toast. (The deer had a broken neck, my bike was still running, but the clutch handle was ripped off and the handlebars were bent. I checked myself over and didn't see anything too messed up, my pants were shredded, my knees were hurting and my hands were really chewed up.

I flagged down a guy in a camaro and had him take me back to my girl's house. She takes me to my grandparents house 5 miles away. (I wasn't really thinking right, in case you didn't notice) I get about half way to the hospital and realize I have a gaping hole in my side. The hole was around 4 inches long and 2 inches deep, with a small flap of flesh in the middle of the gash. My elbow was missing a nice chunk of flesh as well, I could see a large artery sticking out of it, luckily, it wasn't punctured.

I didn't break any bones, the only scratch on my head was on my nose from where my glasses flew off.

I had severe road rash on my right arm, all the skin was gone. Muscles tissue is pretty weird looking.

The doctor cleaned me up, stitched me up and sent me on my way. I slept for almost 36 hours after the accident.

If that is true - my bad.

But that motorcycle story is pretty sick.

Sometimes I leave at 1am, and that almost guarantees deer sightings. I hate seeing those bastards by the side of the road, freakin me out as I drive by, looking like they are ready to jump out in front of my car.

A couple weeks ago, about 7:30am on a Saturday, I was driving to a class I teach. A frikkin HERD of 6 deer come LEAPING from the woods 10ft in front of my car. I locked up the brakes and probably came a foot from clipping them. Idiot deer! Actually, it's our own fault. If we weren't building God damn condos everywhere, they would have more woods to live in. Idiot condo developers!

I had the exact same artery thing happen to me before. I was walking on a wall of old railroad ties when I was about 13 on my way to baseball and I fell and my arm got caught ona piece of wood and ripped a chunk of flesh out of my arm.

It went the hole way to the bone and I could see an artery there.

I went home, put 3 bandaids on, went to baseball, went home, didn't tell anyone about it as i was (and still am) very subject to panic attacks when at the hospital. I did eventually go a few days later.

Hope you didn't get any blood on that sweet camaro (did it have T-TOps?

I got a quail square under the tire driving on I80 to Reno. It was the first time I ever killed anything bigger than a bug with the car, and I started thinking about Bugs Bunny saying, "I wonder if he'll remember he can fly...guess not."

That was also the first time I had a winning trip to NV (this was about 15 years ago) and I've been looking for things to kill whenever I enter the state ever since.

You know how you see birds fly across the road and you say to yourself "I wonder if it's gonna fly a bit higher to avoid a collision with my car?"? They always seem to miss hitting your car, sometimes only by seconds. Well, a few weeks ago one bird didn't make that adjustment and it hit my headlight.

I didn't look that closely at it. It was the big blue one that runs down the side of your forearm. It was pretty gruesome.

I hit a bird in mid-air once, and it made a cool feathery explosion.

Also, I was in the car with my Dad when he hit a cow one time. The cow survived though so I don't think that counts.

Re: Ever kill an animal with your car?

Maybe this is standard, but the only time I ever hit a bird...it got stuck in the grill of my car (a minivan). It died, but I had to pry it out, ripping a wing of and exposing innards in the process.

I was driving down the road and right in front of me a family of ducks starting crossing the road. I tried to break but I clipped 2 of the baby ducklings. I look in my rear view and saw the rest of the family hovering around these ducklings wondering what happened. It was kinda of a weird moment.

I few squirrels but never felt bad about it. But last year on the way to work, a beautiful bird, might have been a pheasant suddenly came out of the brush right into my front bumper and I nailed it. Felt really bad but it was unavoidable.

Re: Ever kill an animal with your car?

My car kills include deer, frogs, birds (canadian goose and a few small-ish normal birds), porcupines, and a turtle.

I've also done what seems to me to be nearly impossible and much more impressive than any of you fools using motorized vehicles to hunt down your prey - I ran over a running red squirrel with my bmx bike when I was a kid.

Re: Ever kill an animal with your car?

Back in high school, my mom was driving the car, with my sister in the front, me and a friend in the back. It was night time, and really dark. We're going probably around 45 mph on a 4 lane road. All of a sudden, my mom lightly yells, "oh no", and I hear a lot of bump-bump-bumps under the car. I look behind and all I see are feathers in the air.

Apparantly she ran over what looks to be a flock of geese or ducks crossing the 4 lane road. She was unable to stop, and would've been unsafe to hit the breaks since there were cars behind us.

All those feathers....

Re: Ever kill an animal with your car?

No, but I saved a turtle from sure death...

There was a huge (at least 15" across its shell) on the shoulder of the highway looking like it might attempt to cross 4 lanes-so I pulled over and carried the big guy back into the swamp. [img]/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img]

I hit a bird once too...

The bird tried to fly across the street at a low level right in front of me, but didn't make it. It hit the top right corner of my windshield. I don't know what happened to it, but I'm pretty sure it got injured.

Nottom 06-02-2006 02:58 PM

Re: Ever kill an animal with your car?

I've hit a dog (it tried to run after my car and got a little too close), a deer, a couple birds, and maybe a cat.

Closest I've come to anything interesting was slamming on the breaks and avoiding a cow by about 5 ft. It was the middle of the night so I didn't really see it until I was amost on top of it. That would have sucked.

I had a friend who claimed to have split a bird in half with his radio antenna.

What kind of bird and does the antenna have any sort of accessories on top - one of those smiley faces or a flag or anything?

Yes. It just happened 3 weeks ago.

Hit a deer pretty flush at 70+ mph on an interstate. Neither the deer nor the car made it.

Re: Ever kill an animal with your car?

I haven't hit anything personally, but my friends have some wierd stories.

One of them was driving on the highway at around 80-90mph and a turkey that was in the road tried to fly up to avoid the car but instead went directly into his windsheild. The force was actually strong enough to shatter through the glass and the bird was essentially vaporized into the back seat of the car. All that was left was a blood soaked car, some small chucks and feathers.

Another friend was on the highway and traveling behind a car in the right hand land. He went to pass that car and just as he did he saw a family in the center divider pulled over. The mom was in the passenger seat with the kids in the back. The dad was on the side of the highway trying to beckon something towards him. Thats when my friend saw the dochsand [wiener dog] standing in the road. The dog started to run but it ran directly away from the car instead of to the side so my friend plowed into the family dog, directly in front of the dads outstretched arms and the kids faces in the window. He heard it go under both tires and decided that it was best not to look back because it would be too aweful. Everyone listening to this story was laughing and digusted all at once.

Re: Ever kill an animal with your car?

I worked the best ever second job with my wife and drove around the city of Seattle during the wee hours putting up posters--HUGE pay (PM me if you want job and contact info). Early on one morning I was driving though a green light in North Seattle when she starts freaking out--"No, no, no, no..." BUMP, BUMP. It's 3:30am and I have no idea about what I just hit. I looked in the rear-view and saw a lifeless lump in the road that was the approximate size of a cat. I felt really sad about the kid who was waiting for, or worse finding his/her dead cat in the middle of the road. A few hours later my wife wondered aloud if any oppossum babies were waiting for their mommy to return. What a relief! A neighbors German Shepherd ran into my car one morning, but he was fine. The dude that owned the dog seemed more worried about my POS than his dog.

This is weird, I go months without hitting anything and then have death days where I hit every [censored] in sight. Dogs, birds, waterfowl, snakes, rabbits, cats, it's [censored] weird. Oh yeah, I live in the country.

Anyone else go on runs with this [censored]? I kinda get freaked out and a little jumpy when it happens, feel like the friggin grim reaper or something.

Sounds like you weren't going to get laid either way.
