2 days to spend in Chicago -- what should I do??

Have a wedding to attend there that will occupy my Friday and Saturday, but will have Wed, Thurs to spend in Chicago. I have never been.

Would like to solicit ideas of how to make the most out of my 48 hours of free time there. Already bought tix to see Cubs at Wrigley. That's all I have lined up to this point.

What kind of stuff are you into? If you're looking for the major tourist type attractions you've got the Natural History Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Navy Pier, Michigan Avenue, Lincoln Park Zoo...any 1 of which might take an entire afternoon. There's lots of nightlife near Wrigley Park or Lincoln Park too.

Re: 2 days to spend in Chicago -- what should I do??

When I'm in Chicago I always love to visit the Shedd Aquarium (they used to have a great otter exhibit and probably still do) and The Art Institute. The Art Institute is just amazing, you should really try to make time for it if you enjoy art at all. The Museum of Science and Industry is really cool too but very crowded.

I've been to Navy Pier several times but it doesn't do much for me. I did ride the ferris wheel though and it is tall!

Right now I'm trying to decide whether or not to go up this summer and check out the King Tut exhibit at the Natural History Museum. My sister and her family are planning a trip up there and it sounds sort of fun. I may tag along.

Re: 2 days to spend in Chicago -- what should I do??

This is really dependent on what you like doing.

-Definitley walk around downtown. If weather's nice, their will be lots to look at.
-Michigan Avenue is always a good idea. Check out Millenium Park
-Go to the top of the Sears Tower or Hancock
-Eat at Portillos.
-Find a good Chicago pizza:Gino's East, Lou Melnadi's, Giordano's
-Tons of musems, Navy Pier, Shedd Aquarium
-While at Wrigley you must pee in the troths.
-Lots of fun bars within walking distance of Wrigley.

If you only have 2 days I wouldn't go to the casino boats, but that's always an option. Haven't you always wanted to see Gary, IN?

Re: 2 days to spend in Chicago -- what should I do??

1) Cubs game. Get to Wrigleyville a bit early and pregame it at the Cubbie Bear, Sluggers, Murphey's etc etc. There are tons of places on Clark to choose from. Plan to stick around Wrigleyville after the game and pick up some hotties or gay men. The choice is yours.

2) The top of the cock for some drinks is always a fun way to see the city.

3) Portillos

4) Architechture river tour or skyline cruise.

The boats arnt worth the trip... but if someone has a bit more than 2 days Arlington Park is always worth the trip.

Others have touched on this, but with only two days, you should just eat. If you had an 3 days, then you would probably want to catch a cubs game and see the art museum, but with only 2 days, you should just be eating.

I definitely would, b/c when am I gonna be in Chicago again?

On the other hand, I doubt many of you would see the appeal.

I'm gonna be in Chicago at the end of June. Is going to Superdawg Drive-In worth it? Weiner Circle sounds like a place we'll end up after hitting the bars. Speaking of... what time do bars close in Chi-town?

Also, we've already looked into Giordanos for pizza... but Gino's and Lou Menaldi's sound damn good as well... we'll try to hit them all, but if you had to choose one spot (not just from these three) where do you go?

This is the holy trinity of pizza. If you like crust go to ginos, if you like awesome sauce go to malnotis.

Wrigley Field (the team sucks but the bars around it are good)
Taste of Chicago starts on July 1st i believe
Navy Pier isn't all that fun I think
eat at Ricobene's on 26th, Lou Malnoti's (sp?),Portillo's,Giordano's, Gino's East, Signature Room on the 95th floor of the Hancock, The Rosebud, Cite,Charlie Trotters
go to Michigan Ave., go to the Sears tower and look down, yadda yadda
Museums are nice, Shed Aquarium is my favorite

Re: 2 days to spend in Chicago -- what should I do??

never ever go to the sears tower to look out at the city
it costs $ and you have to wait through a movie.

the hancock tower has a bar at the top, and is free to ride the elevator to the top, and stuff.

personally i ilke pequod's pizza more than ginos or lous, though giordanos will always have a place in my heart. know that if you go to ginos they have corn meal crusts.

if you're in to baseball, seeing a game at comisky or wrigley is cool.

the art institute is awesome, as is the aquarium, and the field museum has good stuff almost always.

there's about a gillion great restaurants/bars to go to.

level is, to my knowledge, a vodka lounge. so like, don't go there unless you like paying a ton for vodka.

what are you in to? do you like clubs? do you like bars? etc.

go to top of hancock if you've never been and get a drink.

drive to johnny's italian beef - its about 10 mi west of downtown -- this is the best example of this fine chicago cuisine

FYI: starting June 3rd, there is free admission on Thursdays and Fridays from 5pm-9pm. If you go to the Art Institute during the day, grab a snack at the Garden Restaurant. The food isn't great but the atmosphere is nice and relaxing.

Just don't drive to New York, in a van, with your friends. Or cry in the bathroom.

haven't been in chicago in many many years, but greek town used to be lots of fun and had good food at reasonable prices.

check with someone who knows the city recently, please. it could be a pretty tough neighborhood, but it was right by Univeristy of Illinois at Chicago Campus, so we went there a lot!

On the weekend, some bars close at 2am, some 4am. You won't have a problem finding a bar that stays open till 4am.

i don't know how foofy you want to get for dessert, but one of the best is a medium secret:

the very good restaurant "Tru" downtown has i believe friday and saturday only dessert reservations, around $25 i think? easier reservations than dinner seatings, significantly cheaper. really cool bar/waiting area at the restaurant, good art/feel to the place, and superior food. dessert chef is gail ganz i believe is the spelling?

i've heard decent thigns about hotchocolate but have not been there yet myself. if i think of any more i'll let you know.

for food stuff: lawry's prime rib is a very nice prime rib steakhouse, and a moroccan place called tizi melloul is very, very nice. also has an all you can eat appetizers all you can drink house wine and belly dancing on one night of weekends.
