POLL: How Many Of You Are Aware?

The Holloway thread and thinking about Darfur, Sudan, etc. has made me think of how ridiculous it is that she gets so much attention and globabl tragedies don't get any attention. So much for a "global community." Soooo, how many of you were aware that over 5500 people were killed by an earthquake in Indonesia this past weekend?

Re: POLL: How Many Of You Are Aware?

No, but I'm not aware of anything that happened in America this weekend either.

Ditto. I don't think I listened to or read a lick of news in the past few days. I have had a DELIGHTFUL responsibility and stress free weekend.

Re: POLL: How Many Of You Are Aware?

I was, but only because my friend told me.

In that conversation I mentioned the following litmus test.

On the weekends I tend to only see sports news. So for something to be a BIG DEAL (like you'd think the death of 5K people would be) it has to be big enough to break into sports programming on show up on ESPN.com.

This didn't, as such I was not aware.

I am aware. However, I heard about it on CNN International in my Vegas hotel room. Not sure how much it was being covered on the American version of CNN.

No, but I was on vacation this weekend, had no internet access, and looked at the tv for less than an hour between Friday night and Monday night.

Not really. I think news shows are nothing but total crap, and I pretty much avoid them at all costs. I used to get the paper daily but I stopped doing that because the amount of stupidity that is present in our government and society would just get me all worked up, and since there isnt really anything I can do it about it, It would just make me start out the day all pissed off. So I just stopped reading it, and im a much happier person now because of it.

Re: POLL: How Many Of You Are Aware?

I take much the same stance as Alobar.

I'm fortunate enough that most [censored] won't have a meaningful effect on my life, and the more I think about, the more unhappy I become.

I used to be very passionate about politics and news (I was raised on NPR by people who worked in public radio) and around the aftermath of the 2000 election, I became so disgusted with both American society and media that I just decided I'd be happier if I didn't care.

I read the Seattle PI's website, and visit Salon for their gossip column and that's where my news comes from. Every once in a while I get sucked in by something and [censored] up and care for 20 days, but then I just end up frustrated and upset and give up again.

BBC World is my homepage. I usually don't read the articles, but at least this way I get the big news from the world.

only aware because it was the headline on the front page of the newspaper outside my hotel room door. I picked up the paper, saw the headline, thought "damn, that sucks... lemme grab the sports page before I head down to the pool to fall asleep."

I'm in this boat too. It just doesn't interest me at all. I don't know why it doesn't interest me. Maybe it will someday. But I do have a much happier, more optimistic view of the world than most of the people I know who watch a lot of TV news.

Ignorance is bliss I suppose...

Re: POLL: How Many Of You Are Aware?

I can see both sides of the argument here.

Following politics can be frustrating and confusing, regardless of your political views.

Following the news can oftentimes be depressing and frustrating (often due to politics).

However, I think it's sad when so many people know so little about the world that surrounds them.

Just click the CNN webpage once a day. Not too tough. Also for all my in-depth news I watch The Daily Show/Colbert, and for the same in sports - Pardon the Interruption. I stay basically informed, and entertained w/o having to sit through awful 6 o'clock news.

I heard something, but I wasn't aware it was that many (holiday weekend, I didn't even read the paper yet)

Do I get extra credit for not having any idea what Hollaway refers to?

I really don't like following something I can't affect. I mean I could spend all afternoon following a news story on TV, or I could read a book on poker, or real estate or cooking and make myself a better at some skill.

Other than that it's all been Taylor Hicks and 715 lately around my neck of the Tiger woods.

or you can go on internet go on http://news.bbc.co.uk/ and see the headlines and skim/read through events which hold your interest or seem very important. Takes 10 minuets of your day but keeps you informed about world you live in... I really don’t think it’s that hard to stay informed of what goes on in this world as people make it out to be. Laziness is no excuse.

XXXNoahXXX 05-30-2006 06:51 PM

Re: POLL: How Many Of You Are Aware?

1.)Apathy is not an excuse.

2.)Ignorance is not bliss, particularly for the millions that are dying/suffering because of that ignorance.

3.) I suppose you could take the stance that everyone look out for their own and its not problem whats going on, blah, blah, but that seems a real shallow and bleak way to go through life.

To say i only read books on poker, etc. because I don't like hearing about things I cant change is unacceptable. Nobody is asking you to drop everything and join the Peace Corps. Make a donation. Write a letter to your local politicians. Support ecotourism. Whatever. Theres so many small things that can be done without being a saint or millionaire.

And no, I don't think that I'm better than anyone that says that can't do anything, don't care, and I realize that it is just an atittude that has resulted from the culture we live in.

Nobody's asking you to weep when 5500 people die thousands of miles away, but at least take a moment to pause even if it just means muting the tv for ten seconds to say a little prayer.

why do people have to care about something that doesnt affect them at all? What changes in your life because you know an earthquake happens? OR there was a bombing for the 40 millionth time. That stuff just makes me happy...

runner4life7 05-30-2006 07:00 PM

Re: POLL: How Many Of You Are Aware?

I also think its pretty dick to think that others should spend 10 minutes knowing the world that doesnt affect them. Maybe i think everyone should spend 30 minutes running everyday and not be so fat but thats none of my business. This comes down to you people that like news and dont understand not everyone is the same as you. Clearly you have learned nothing from the news.

I'm guessing you're like 21 at best? You'll get over this stuff eventually.

Fact is, I can't change [censored]. I'm not going to waste my time fighting windmills. Selfish, yes, but I'm WAY ok with that.

I do - every April 15th. And I'm glad the US gives some of it to these countries that need it. So when I focus on increasng a skill to make more money, I pay more taxes that helps these countries. So why do I need to learn about every situation - that's why we elect politicians/ambassadors/etc.
