Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
i wrestled in HS and dont think much of what you say is accurate, other than that wrestlers aren't looked upon as highly as football/basketball...i think all that stuff about them being the middle between popular and unpopular may just be in your school or based no who you know...
cauliflower ear should be practically nonexistant now that wrestlers wear head gear all the time. and if someone does get it then its their fault or the coaches fault for not maknig them wear headgear at all times... also, about weight loss, if your coach teaches you how to do it properly it can be done safely w/o real detriment to the wrestler, but if the coach doesn't correctly educate the student as to proper nutrition and not make them cut too much then it can become dangerous and have an extremely negative effect on the wrestlers performance... as for spitting, its utterly useless and extremely gross, although i and most on my team did it before matches... and finally, don't hate on wrestling, its insanely difficult... |
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
Our wrestling team were league champs 4 years in a row...we were the kings of our campus...I think our basketball team/football team won that many games a year...but then again 4 out of the 5 starters on our varsity b-ball team were asian....

Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
We don't care about "pep rallies" or cheerleaders, we are in it for the war. Yeah, we have chips on our shoulders because we are warriors. We like to fight and in order to be a good wrestler you need to have a ton of aggression. We also have a lot of pride because we know that do the toughest sport in HS sports and can take anyone else in school in a fight. We could rip through hockey player, football players, and the basketball players were too scared to even talk to us. Ah, good times. We owned the locker room and made the b ball players use the small lockers.
[censored] , were you a basket ball player? |
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
JT,
no. |
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
All,
no big suprise that all the wrestlers are taking this way too seriously. totally fits with the profile. wrestlers, relax and go rub some ointment or a balm on your ears of something. |
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
This thread, especially with the recent addition of jokerthief's post, is taking a turn for the homoerotic (though this is more or less inevitable for any discussion about high school wrestling).

Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
Posting unedited AIM conversations?
Ugh. |

Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
spitting is a crappy way to cut weight, unhelthy too i think
|
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
The basketball players at our school were all p****** and they knew it.
What was also tough about wrestling was making weight every week. This post makes me want to watch vision quest again. |
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
On a scale of one to ten how much did you hate getting raped by wrestlers in high shcool?
|
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
Samurai,
You ought to check out mixed martial arts. I have been doing it for a while now and it's a good way to keep the glory days alive. BJJ is also way more fun than wrestling. |

spitting is a crappy way to cut weight, unhelthy too i think [/ QUOTE ] It's much more efficient to just sweat. Cutting weight itself is very dangerous and unhealthy. We were closely monitored by the state to keep it safe. We would have an initial weigh in and a body fat test done in the beginning of the season. But what we did is nothing compared to the UFC and Pride guys. They will cut way more and have to endure blows. This is very dangerous and is also a reason why almost all of the deaths in boxing come at the lower weight classes where fighters are cutting tons of weight. |
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
I wrestled in high school and I thought it was absolutely awesome. It was a sport where everything was on you. It didn't matter if you team sucked or if you even had a team - it was you and one other dude trying to see who was the best. It was a great sport b/c for the most part it came down to who worked the hardest and who wanted it the most - physical constraints are not as limiting which makes it a great sport for anyone.
It was by far the most physically challenging and rewarding sport I have been involved in. I played football in high school and in college - which is an awesome sport, but a completely different game than wrestling. I definitely had a chip on my shoulder, but I had it in football, baseball, and pretty much any sport I played in. I think that has more to do with being competitve than playing a particular sport. If you want to be the best in any sport your really have to think you are the best or can at least attain that status. Are you competitive at sports? Were you any good? I have no clue about your background, but I would bet that you or anyone else who has been successful at sports has a bit of a chip on their shoulder - it is fairly naturally and almost a direct result of the success. As far as the outfits we had to wear - sure they were lame, but obviously they are used as a practical matter not as a fashion statement. If anything it was motivation to make sure you were not a lard ass. There was nothing worse than seeing fat pudgy mofos wearing that stuff. But really it is not a big deal to wear the outfit. As to losing weight. Yes that can be retarded. I saw some people do some stupid stuff - lie under mats with plastics on and we would have to check to make sure they were alive every 5 minutes. I was fortunate and never really had to cut weight and wrestled what I weighed. Fortunetely, there are much stricter guidelines on weightloss in place now and they are cracking down on it. Hopefully this trend will continue. Then as to not being as popular you are definitely correct. We would have huge pep rallys and all sorts of stuff for football even when we sucked. Whereas for wrestling I would often have to go to tournaments by myself b/c the rest of my team did not qualify and when I would win or place hardly anyone would even know. This may add to why some wrestlers have more of a chip than others b/c they feel they don't get the respect that others get - though I still think this is a tangental point. Overall, wrestling is one of the best activities you can be involved in while in high school and I would highly recommend it to anyone. Its too bad you never got to experience it first hand as it really is rewarding and a lot of fun. |

I'm pretty sure you can say pussies.

Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
and as other said above hardly anyone gets cauliflower ear anymore as everyone wears head gear. My dad has some effed up ears, so I always wore my head gear.
I'd be much more worried about getting ringworm or some crap like that from unclean mats. BTW - Jeremy, what sports do or did you play? |
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
I wish we'd done wrestling at my school. It's not a standard thing in the UK, and I would have liked it, I think. Rugby and Water Polo were my games, but wrestling would have been pretty cool.
|
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
Seems like it's either wrestlers that enjoy it and everyone else who doesn't.
Any wrestlers that hated it? Any spectators that like the sport? Personally, I don't understand the real point of it or why they wear retarded uniforms that only accentuate the gayness of the sport. How hard would it have been to make the leg part longer and the top look like a shirt instead of suspenders? |
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
[censored] Did you ever dream of going pro, to the WWE or WCW or something?
|
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
I am the master of Greco Roman wrestling. My wife didn't understand the joy i felt from bringing down a husky man like Bryan and pinning him to the ground until he squirms and squeals like a little piglet.
Not being on the wrestling team and yet noticing the guys on the wrestling team at all might be a key point being overlooked here. |
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
Stuey.
how could I not have noticed them what with them wearing their "uniforms" to school on the days when there was a meet? Surely you must remember how weird it was to stand in line in the cafeteria next to some dude with [censored] up ears and nothing but a unitard on. |
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
Say what you want about the OP, but wrestlers are weird dudes.
And I don't mean to take shots with gay comments, but the relationships between teammates that I saw were unusual to say the least. |
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
All,
also were the wrestlers at your schools always selling [censored] like candy bars and soda in order to raise funds for the squad or perhaps mats? I don't remember the football, basketball, baseball or hell even soccer teams having to do that. Probably another reason for the chip we are seeing in this thread. |

Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
[censored] , what is wrong with having a chip on one's shoulder?

Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
I always found the guys who were scared of the wrestlers would say things like this behind our backs and then when they later got thier asses kicked they would whine. Just like anything else.
Our Basketball team and wrestling team where both district champions my last three years of highschool. I was wrestling 103 pounds and had full run of the school. I would show up at noon because, "I was busy losing weight all morning" then the principle would ask me if I needed a note to get out of any other classes to work out more. We used to have cheerleaders and pep rallys. Plus, alot of girls were pro, um... helping us loses some weight. Something about a guy with 4% body fat benching 200+ pounds they seemed to like. Sure my ears were a little messed up, but they have a pretty easy surgery for that now. I was never a spitter, I tried it a couple of times, but I never could lose the 1/4 pound with it. It did suck to eat two bowls of cereal for your only two meals of the day. I do enjoy the fact that still to this day, I feel pretty confident in any fight (though I havn't been in a real one in five years). |
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
I never wrestled. In fact, our school didn't even have a wrestling team so I can't comment on the standing of wrestlers in the high school social hierarchy. I do think they're phenomenal athletes with incredible conditioning, but I'm definitely with [censored] on the unitard thing. Wtf is with that?

Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
No one could stink up a locker room like wrestlers. Just thinking about the b.o. generated by a couple dozen guys trying to sweat off another 3 pounds makes me queasy.
I still know 2 guys that wrestled in high school (20 years ago now) and both have neck/back issues, but at least their ears are normal looking. Our guys didn't wear unitards in school, probably because they were still trying to sweat off another pound or whatever. Bender: I have such a deep admiration for guys who role around on the floor with other guys. Andrew: You'd never miss it. You don't have any goals. Bender: Oh, but I do. I want to be just like you. I figure all I need is a lobotomy and some tights. Brian: You wear tights? Andrew: No, I do not wear tights. I wear the required uniform. Brian: Tights. Andrew: Shut up! |
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
i never wrestled buta good friend of mine from cc and track was a 4 time state wrestler and i found it fun to watch because I am super weak being a distance runner and all. I probably should have wrestled if for no other reason than to stay in shape int he off season so I dont have too strong of feelings either way maybe slightly for it being ok and not fitting censoredes definition

Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
I wrestled in HS and my first year of college until I decided it was too much dedication to excel at the collegiate level.
First off - we didn't wear singlet's to school - EVER. Only on the day of a match, we had a dress code where we had to wear a tie . Secondly - we never had to do anything like sell candy bars or anything to raise money. We had a long tradition at my high school of a great wrestling program. Our coach was a national champ in college too, FWIW. Lastly and probably most importantly - we had a kickline for our meets (cheerleaders were at basketball) and wrestling did get me laid - with more than a few different girls in HS. Anyway, what I liked about wrestling: Totally dependant on your performance. No one else to blame or credit for your wins or losses. Incredible amounts of energy expended in a short period of time. Best conditioning for any HS sport that I know of. What I didn't like: Unhealthily dropping weight to be competitive, the freaking smell of the wrestling room, singlets. Anyway, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it seems like wrestling is one of those sports that is not universally constant in US high schools - but dependant on region and wrestling program's success or lack their of. |
Re: AIM convo concerning HS wrestling
[censored] - please note how 27.3% of all a-hole high school wrestlers grow up to be a-hole cops.
