Do they do this on purpose?
Sorry if this has been gone over before...
So I'm playing at the Commerce and the waitress brings my meal. I reach for a few chips to tip and.... Whoa!!! I almost just gave her $400!!! I mean she was a good waitress, but... You see, I'm used to white chips being a dollar. $1. A buck. 100 pennies. At the Commerce they're $100. A C-note. At most places I've played, dollar chips usually have at least a white theme to them. $100 chips, a black theme. $25 chips, a green theme. $10 chips a brown (or yellow) theme. $5 chips a red theme. I suppose I've seen variations of this, but it's basically correct. To the point where I thought this was universal. This may sound silly, but I really had to watch myself when playing there! I guess I can be pretty careless with white chips, because I'm so used to using them only for tokes. Hopefully, I didn't absent-mindedly throw someone a $100 tip. I did take a white home by accident. Proof that I am programmed to not give whites much attention. I'm trying to think if I got any special attention from dealers or waitresses. -lol. Nah, I don't "think" I did. My point is, I'm thinking this may have been done intentionally. So that out of towners may accidently over toke. I suppose that's a pretty paranoid statement, but why would they be the only ones with white $100 chips? I haven't played anywhere else in California... Are $100s white everywhere else in CA? |
Re: Do they do this on purpose?
San Jose, White == $100 for as long as I can remember.

Re: Do they do this on purpose?
Not just a drink. But also a fantastic huge steak dinner with all the trimmings and it was entirely comped. So yeah, when something's free I generally feel obligated to tip a little more. Anyone else?

[/ QUOTE ] You're paranoid. I've heard the real reason for special California colors has something to do with the significance of red and black in Asian culture, but I consider that apocryphal. Regardless, they're quite standard in California. (Here's a 2-year-old design for a Bike $100 chip.) No one's trying to cheat you. (You sound like my dad reading the check at a restaurant, except that he'd never play poker for money.) I haven't seen a Commerce $100, but the Bike's are oversize so you'd have to be pretty oblivious to just toss one to someone casually. Oh, and $10 is officially blue in Atlantic City, though I've only seen them at the Borgata. |
Re: Do they do this on purpose?
How do they put it in OOT? Thinly veiled brag post?

[/ QUOTE ] I believe both places have both oversized and regular sized. Oversized if you are playign some game where it is significant (like you just colored up) and regular sized for a white chip game. |

How do they put it in OOT? Thinly veiled brag post? Martin [/ QUOTE ] Brag?!! What on earth do you think I'm bragging about? I just admitted to almost paying $400 for a meal, because I was too stupid/careless to keep track of how much the chips were! You must be pretty low on the ladder of self esteem to find a brag in this post. |
Re: Do they do this on purpose?
Wow! Nice find on the link!! You're right. I never played a hand in CA before, and I NEVER in a million years would've thought to look up standard CA chip colors!
Hope you realize I'm being slightly tongue in cheek. I don't really think they're trying to cheat anyone. But I did find it a little dangerous. When you've played thousands of hours with whites being a dollar and black being $100, it's not that hard to make a mistake. Especially a space cadet like me. Btw- The Commerce starts over-sizing their chips at $5k I think. |

The game rarely kicks off but I saw one this weekend, so maybe there will be a regular one this summer. The blue chips there are new and shiny since they are rarely used, a staunch difference from the dirty red ones. Yellow is $20 at the Borgata, haven't seen them at the Taj. |
Re: Do they do this on purpose?
I took it in that tone, and I hope you took my reply in the same tone. At least, i hope you're not as nitty as my dad looking over the check.... *shudders*

Odd chip silliness at the Borgata
FWIW I noticed a single yellow $20 and a blue $10 in the tray in a $1-2 NL game at the Borgata. Just to convince the table I was a bit eccentric (Caroesquely, I suppose), and because I enjoy being a nerd about such things, I bought them and put them into play. I was sorta surprised that the dealers (Lourdes, Julissa, and Chandra IIRC) didn't color them out, but they indulged my silliness.
But then my conscience kept reminding me of the recent "hidden high-denom chip trick" thread, and I thought someone else might accuse me of shooting angles. So I colored them out myself using some spare quarters that I had on hand but not playing. But hmm, I've never seen the Taj's blues, though Archie Black has a photo here. I'll have to see if I can spot the $40/80 there. And now, I've officially contributed to the hijacking of this thread. |
Re: Odd chip silliness at the Borgata
Yeah, they look really really new. They had a 40 game running this past Saturday at around 2 pm. I assume there will be one again this weekend, especially because of the holiday.

Re: Odd chip silliness at the Borgata
Lestat,
At Lucky Chances near SF, 20s are black and 100s are white. Anyway, for next time, stop being such a cheapskate and avoid confusion at the same time by doing what the rest of us do when at Commerce - toss the waitress a redbird for your meal! |

You tip $4 for a drink? [/ QUOTE ] I thought the tipping standards were: -$100 for the dealer when you win a hand -$200/$400 for the dealer if it's a big pot (over $100) -$400 for a meal, $1000 if there's meat in it -$2000 for the floor to get your name first on the wait list Follow these standards and you won't be looked upon as the cheap as$ nit who only cares about the bottom line. It may cost you money in the short term but it will give you a good image and will allow a cumfortable table atmosphere. |
Re: Do they do this on purpose?
Taj now has a 40-80 stud game (replaced 30-60) which uses all blue chips. The 40 goes off here and there but I heard it went Saturday (with two tables).

If that is the case, then I apologize.
I am pretty easy going, but this sort of thing has been happening (in a non joking manner) too often lately, and I'm kinda snippy about it. |

... Are $100s white everywhere else in CA?... [/ QUOTE ] In the poker rooms, white $100s are standard. Hustler even has them in regular and over-sized. Now, if you go out to the Palm Springs area, Agua Caliente Casino uses the standard colors you see in Vegas. white/blue $1, red $5, green $25, black $100. |

Oh yeah? I don't care what you write or what pictures you show or any other so-called "factual" evidence. A redbird is a $5 chip, period. Whatever you have to say to that, my response is "FU." |

Re: Do they do this on purpose?
Lestat,
My experience at commerce is that since everyone is ordering potstickers + steak + salad + kalbi + a sandwich + ice cream + 3 bottles water + coffee + whatever else, they just always tip $5, so that's what I do too. |
Re: Do they do this on purpose?
What do you play there, El Diablo? Did I play with you a couple weeks ago in the 1-2 hold'em?
|
Re: Do they do this on purpose?
Lestat,
I haven't played there in a year, but next time I go I'll be playing 10/20 to 50/100 NL. Maybe a little 40-80 or 1-2 if I get bored of playing challenging games and want to meet some dumb LHE players. |
Re: Do they do this on purpose?
Not to hijack my own thread, but...
I saw those NL games when I was there. Didn't really pay too much attention though. There was an ex bench warmer from the old Championship Bulls team who was in the game and looked like he was donating. The 50 game started just one day and broke shortly. Other than that... It didn't look like there were too many chips on the table for that game. I mean, even a 10/20 no-max is supposed to play pretty big, right? But it didn't look like there was much more than 40k-50k on the table. I honestly think the 1-2 limit played a little bigger. But I'm sure I'm wrong. I hear that NL is a really big/good game. I've got to start learning NL one of these days. gl. |
Re: Do they do this on purpose?
A couple of months ago I was visiting LA and played a night a the Commerce. I had been playing 6/12 HE chips and was getting a burned out, but didn't want to go back to my hotel so I decided to hop over to a 3/6 Omaha game. The didn't want my $3 chips there for some reason, only $1 chips. I sent my gf over to the cage with three racks of the $3 chips and said "get two racks of white, and the rest in cash". She comes back with 9 white chips and I'm thinking she stopped at the table games on the way back or something and then I see that they're $100 chips. All the old people at the table had a good laugh at us. "You're from the east coast, aren't ya?"
