Linkin Park

I used to listen to Hybrid Theory and Meteora all the time; I still listen to these albums during poker because it's so easy to listen to all of their tracks.

I know they have a rep for having songs that sound very similar throughout their albums.

What's OOT's thoughts on Linkin Park's music? Any suggestions on similar music for playing poker?

I didn't know anyone over 17 liked them. A little too angsty for my tastes.

I also like Linkin Park. I still listen to songs from hybrid theory and meteora. Are they gonna come out with some new stuff any time soon?

I listen to a lot of music, and Linkin Park happens to be a band I've liked a lot since high school. I'm pretty sure a lot of the other stuff I listen to would not be OOT-approved, either.

Eh? I still remember the commercials for it. Maybe they weren't "mainstream" but they were getting pretty good airplay.

I'm not really a fan of em, but they have their moments. Most of the time they just kinda grate on my ears though.

I'm a fan of Reanimation, but it doesn't go past that. I got nothing against them though, which is more than I can say for a lot of bands.

yeah, LP's the kinda band that does a style I don't like but they do it reasonably well. I just can't get past the vocals.

A little too much; I have no friends, nobody cares about me. Dealing with parents expectations. I think I should be commmitted to a mental institution., etc...

Never could identify, sorry.

I'm still waiting for their second album. The first was a great debut, anybody who argues against that is just letting their own bias get in the way (keep in mind i hate Linkin Park at the moment).

They had solid production, good delivery and alot of promise. Too bad their lyrics never matured, their singer never let his balls drop and move away from the 'throaty' 16-year old, and their tracks all sound the same.

Considering their members were pretty much handpicked by the record label execs, I don't think they were ever NOT mainstream

I read somewhere that Mike Shinoda started the band in his community college...Surfinillini used to take piano lessons with Shinoda and his brother.

I don't like Linkin Park very much, but I like some bands that some people would group with them.

You may like (if you don't already) Disturbed, System of a Down, Slipknot, Taproot.

Part of the problem with recommending hard rock bands is that the line between mainstream and hardcore is difficult to define. If you like Pearl Jam, you might think System is really edgy. If you like Pantera, you might think anything that gets radioplay is for pussies. I know there's a whole world of underground bands that probably either look at a group like Disturbed as pioneers or sellouts and I'm not really sure what's going on in that world. And underground v mainstream isn't exactly a new phenomenon.

Getting a bit off track.

Anyway, I think Linkin Park's music is catchy enough to be mildly enjoyable, but the sound is too repetitive and the lyrics too bland for me to really get into it. It sounds manufactured. I didn't know before reading it in this thread that they were packaged by a studio, but it wouldn't surprise me. I don't like the lead singer's voice either. The Jay-Z album was decent, but I'd rather see a Jay-Z/hardrock combo with several other bands than Linkin Park.

I did a little research and I'm pretty sure this is untrue.

Linkin Park began in the surroundings of Mike Shinoda's bedroom studio, where he and friend Brad Delson recorded the band's first material in 1996. The two had attended Agoura High School together in Los Angeles-suburb Agoura Hills, where they met the band's drummer, Rob Bourdon. Shinoda met up with DJ Joseph Hahn while studying illustration at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Meanwhile, attending UCLA, Delson shared an apartment with bassist Dave Farrell, who left the band after college and returned a year later. At this point, along with vocalist Mark Wakefield, they named themselves Xero (after revising the former name Super Xero) and recorded several demo tracks. They were never signed and the project floundered.

Shinoda advertised for a vocalist, choosing Chester Bennington, a transplanted Arizona native who started making records when he was 16. They immediately started to write and record music.

Sorry for a potential thread hijack, but this points out something that I don't really get.

Clearly, the vast majority of those on this board think those who like "mainstream" stuff because it's "mainstream" are idiots. That is correct. People who like things just because they are popular are sheep.

However, there are many here who don't like music simply because it's "mainstream." They are idiots too. This is the same phenomenon as all those teenage "goth" morons who dress alike just so they can be "different."

In either case, the individual in question is cutting off their experiences simply to fit into their desired perceived image. For some reason, this applies especially to music. I don't hear anyone on this board saying "Seinfeld sucks - it's too mainstream."

Most, but not all, of the music in the "mainstream" category sucks. The same goes for indie/hardcore/underground/whatever your're into. If you don't like a band, have a reason better than "it's mainstream." (Many have been noted here for not liking LP, and they are all fair.)
