Your new WSOP champ is a chump.

Dealer tip from J. Hachem? A single $100 bill. What a schmuck.

Is that just for the dealers at the final table - or just the final hand - or what?

I believe that the winner (and everybody else at the final table, IIRC) tips the entire ME staff a percentage of their prize, meaning that the staff was probably very well compensated for their hard work during the ME. Although I'm sure the OP considered that before calling him a 'chump'.

the winner tipped the staff 100 bucks you figure the percentage

Sorry, that doesn't sound plausible at all. You expect me to believe that his prize-pool percentage tip to the entire staff was $100 out of a $7,500,000 prize? If he was going to tip so little, why not just tip nothing? It seems much more likely that he gave the dealer a $100 bill and then his percentage tip was something else (perhaps someone can confirm whether or not Binion's staff is allowed to know how much an individual entrant tipped from their pool).

Nobody would tip $100 out of a $7.5 million prize instead of $0 unless they were actively trying to insult.

Once again you people look into it too deep! I mean really, who cares. Its not your money/your problem. He would prolly whipe the floor with all of you anyway.

They already raked 2% of the prize pool for tourney workers, thats over $1,100,000.

I don't know how many staff members were involved but I'd guess they all got a pretty good chuck.

i have a feeling i would be extremely friendly to the dealer that dealt me the winning hand, even if all they were doing was their job. like a couple grand.

hell, i just won 7.5 mill!

Re: Your new WSOP champ is a chump.

If the tournament staff is going to take a tip out in advance for the staff and dealers I don't think the player should be under any obligation to tip more.

I would tip something of course, because it's just too much money and just to be nice, but in theory he already tipped a huge sum of money just by winning the prize.

Honestly I think that every tournament should just take the tip out in advance. It's really absurd to take the tip out of the prize pool and then get upset because someone doesn't extra tip. The WSOP directors obviously decided what they thought was a fair tip before the event.

Exactely. Tip the dealer(s) (more then $100), but only a complete sheep or someone with very few friends (and looking for more) would tip the staff for a job they are already being paid very well for.

Is he suppose to tip Hellmuth too for the commentary?

How about the press for the coverage?

Re: Your new WSOP champ is a chump.

each down dealt is a share of that 2% rake. one dealer figured the most any one dealer made was 12k. this is not an average but an estimate of the amount the dealer with the most downs received.

And of course he isn't. I think people are generally tipping because they want to avoid being perceived as cheap. Tipping $100 more is about the worst possible move to make, because it's too little tip to avoid him looking cheap, but it makes it harder for him to take the line of "Well, the toke was already taken out of the prize pool so I'm not tipping anything."

J.Brown 07-17-2005 04:09 PM

i agree. i think these big events should just take a fair fee out of the prizepool and forget about a tip.

with an event on this scale how can a player know what he should tip, how it gets distributed, etc.

Fair enough, but don't expect a whole lot of people to believe you when your only evidence is an uncorroborated talk with three Binion's dealers and your response to what seemed to me to be pretty obvious questions is "believe what you want".

from "Positively Fifth Street", p. 323:

"I decide to tip $7,500, plus another $300 for John Gerhart [the dealer who dealt the satellite where he won his seat]. Altogether this comes to 3.3 percent of my profit...And now Tom [Elias] is thanking me so profusely I'm afraid I overdid it." (emphasis mine)

So McManus gives a 3.3% tip to the entire staff and $300 to a single dealer? Based on your standards I guess he's a chump too, right?

I really hate in life when they automatically charge you for the tip, but then they "expect" you to leave an extra tip on top of the tip. I hate this not just in poker tournaments, but in everything.

I don't get how taking $1.1M out of the prize pool isn't enough to compensate the dealers. The most any dealer got was 12k? I know the WSOP only comes around once a year, but still, it seems like 12k is pretty decent for a week's work.

How much does one have to tip, on top of the $1.1M, to not be a "chump"? How much are the rest of the final table finishers "expected" to tip, given that it's a pretty flat pay schedule? If it's really being split among 200 different dealers or whatever, you're going to have to tip an awful lot to make a difference in everyone's bottom line.

not at all, it's a fair amount. but $100 is just horrible. you want to call the dealers liars that's fair too i guess.
and if you don't think they have access to that kind of info you're just wrong. Info like that spreads thru a casino in about 10 minutes

i don't think it's about the bottom line as much as it is about the gesture. Greg(as was posted) tipped 50k, a fine amount that shows he at least aknowledged the work done. 100 bucks is just cruel

Re: Your new WSOP champ is a chump.

The vig on the WSOP tourneys this year was pretty big. I'm generally fine with leaving a tip, but here, Harrah's already took a designated amount out of the prize pool for tip money. There's no obligation whatsoever to leave an additional tip.

Had I finished first, though, I probably would have left something more.

Thank you very much for missing the fact that he tipped the satellite dealer $300 - the amount that McManus directly tipped the final table dealer was $0. Therefore I'm quite sure that he fits your rather absurd definition of "chump".

then who got the 7500? the staff split it right?

Re: Your new WSOP champ is a chump.

3% of the WSOP cash purse is withheld for dealer tips

a $100 tip is fairly generous and unnecessary considering he is already tipping 3% of his 7.5 million.

ive read that the prize cut for dealers was 3% this year, that number could have been off however. i also read taht dealers were already making like $40/hr for dealing this event since the tip purse is so large. i think the dealers should shut the hell up those greedy scumbags.

these dealers should shut the hell up. what were they expecting a $75,000 tip? if you are basing tipping on a percentage of the winnings then that figure is 1% of what he won. there is no way that the dealers deserve that. i would think that tipping prolly 1k to each dealer would seem sufficient. the dealer is just doing their job. unless they went out of theie way to be extremely nice to me i don't see any reason why they should be complaining about how much the tip should be.

edit: and after reading more of this thread i am now even further convinced that the dealers are just complaining too much. the house already took out 3% to them. im assuming they get paid a regular wage and this is a bonus. like someone said they are making $40 an hour already to do a brainless job so i would just shut up if i were them.

Like I said, how much should you tip, on top of the $1.1 million, so you're not a chump. First prize is 15% of the prize fund, so the first prize winner has already tipped $165,000 to the dealers, as his share of the $1.1M.

After I've had $165,000 taken out of my prize for the dealers, I wouldn't like being called cheap for not giving more.
