Traveling abroad. Where do you stash your passport/important items?
I have a fanny pack from high school but it blatantly screams "tourist". I considered getting a small traveling kit and keep it inside my backpack, but people tell me that this is not safe. I am going to Asia, where I guess pickpockets and such are more common than in Europe.
Should I invest in one of those pouches you strap to your body for my passport/cash? Is this overkill? |

I'd recommmend that pouch. You feel stupid at first but you get used to it very quickly and don't feel it after a while. I had a small pouch only for my passport and a few hundred USD for emergencies.

Smart Thinking, this way if you get mugged or robbed, you will still have the emergency money. |

[/ QUOTE ] It's called a money belt, and no it is not overkill. Keep the bulk of your cash and your ID and other documents in your money belt. |

If you go somewhere really dangerous, put 1 $100-bill or a big local bill in your shoe and remember the phone number to your embassy. That will be enough to manage even if somebody steals all your other possesions.

Money belt. Its also not a bad idea to stash a large bill in that tiny little front pocket if you are wearing jeans.

Re: Traveling abroad. Where do you stash your passport/important items
use your freakin pockets. everyone always overthinks this stuff...not to mention you'll look like a f*g with that pouch

Re: Traveling abroad. Where do you stash your passport/important items
i have a zip up wallet type thing for my documents and passport and important things. i usually leave it in my hotel room safe. money i just keep in my pockets, either jeans or in an interior pocket or a pocket with a zipper.

Re: Traveling abroad. Where do you stash your passport/important items
I had a money belt, and I had a tote bag I carried every day. I kept my passport, credit cards and most money in my money belt, in my tote bag I had my camera, whatever amount of cash I planned to use for the day, and anything else I needed. I preferred the tote bag to a back pack because I wore it on the front as opposed to my back.
I stayed in hostels for my trip, at night I would tie my tote bag to my bed and sleep on it. It was a decent pillow more than a few times. |

i use a thin pocket thingy that goes under my belt/pants/drawls and is completely unnoticeable to even a pat down really. has a strap that goes around my waste. keep the credit cards/passport there...but be sure to stash a couple hundred bucks someplace else just in case. [/ QUOTE ] like up your ass. that is the only place that won't get checked (usually). |

Sometimes when you get mugged they take everything... That includes your shoes and your backpack.

Well I will be doing a lot of traveling around and spending time sleeping on trains....so I guess I'll probably pick up a money belt to have the most important things on my person.

[/ QUOTE ] Didn't happen to me, but when I was in Mexico there a guy in the lobby that this happened to, so I obviously don't have the whole story. But c'mon people. if you get into a situation where you are mugged in a foreign country, the criminals are not complete morans. Your backpack is going to be an obvious target. Your shoe's are worth something (not to mention pepole often hide money in them), so they are a target too. All you can really do is divide your money into as many places as possible and hope they miss something. Hopefully you have a hotel safe or something that is actually safe as well. |

I used something like this in Europe
http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/easyg...alletviewb.jpg It goes under your clothes and was pretty convenient. But I have to say, it was really safe where I went so I never really worried about hiding my money. I also like those wrist wallets, just because they're so convenient. They're good for when you go out with no pockets and don't want a purse. They look like wrist cuffs. http://hoods.biz/images/419a.jpg |
