Anyone that doesnt tip the dealer?

I always used to tip the dealer when I played live, usually a buck unless the pot was real small then I wouldn't tip anything.

Now I don't tip at all. My thinking is Why should I constantly tip a dealer all night long?

Now I don't play live that much but If i was to constantly tip the dealer I would probably be shelling out probably $500-$1,000 a year in tips.

I'd rather have that $1,000 in my pocket instead of the dealers.
Anyone else feel this way?

I have a horrible feeling I'm being trolled. If so, I will congratulate you in advance But I'll make a serious attempt at a reply anyhoo.

How about because they're in the service industry, and their wages are poor in anticipation that they will be tipped?

You "don't play much" but you are winning 500-1000 pots a year? Assuming you win 7% of all your hands, that's up to 14,200 hands played, or over 470 hours a year.

Besides, amount paid is not the point. I will wager you spend much more in a year tipping the wait staff at restaurants. For the sake of consistency if nothing else you really should stop tipping them too.

If dealers make 0 in tips the quality will go down drastically.

You've come to the wrong place if you're looking for a pat on the back... if anything, all you are going to get is a kick in the nuts. Just admit you are a cheap **** and get on with it... I will respect those who post to the effect of "This dealer at my local B&M was rude/didn't seem interested...should I tip when I win?"... You just came right out and said you were cheap regardless of the circumstances... Stick with the internet...you don't have to worry about being a tightwad there...

I have no problems tipping for good service, and as far as being a cheap ass I'm far from it.

I tip eating out, taxis, coffee shops, pizza delivery basicly everywhere that is standard plus others except for the casino.

In the casino I play at the tips are pooled so by tipping a dealer I am also tipping the other 100 plus dealers half of which are jackasses.

So why am I tipping the jackasses?

By tipping the good dealers you are also tipping the bad dealers, so why should I tip for bad serivce?

Re: Anyone that doesnt tip the dealer?

We keep our own tokes here in Nevada, as do most of the dealers in California and Arizona. How I work reflects my income, and nobody elses... You never mentioned in your original post about all the dealers pooling their tokes. If I had known that, I wouldn't have wasted as much time as I did responding to you... Pooled toke dealers vs go-for-your-own dealers is a whole other debate...

LImitPlayer 07-17-2005 09:39 AM

Re: Anyone that doesnt tip the dealer?

I thought tip pooling was standard. I live in Canada, I have two Casinos to go to and they both pool tips

Re: Anyone that doesnt tip the dealer?

Most people aren't actively making money when they eat in a restaurant or drink in a bar and it's still considered common decency to tip in those situations.

Re: Anyone that doesnt tip the dealer?

Ahh..what part of Canada? I used to live in Niagara Falls, NY... The casino on the US side, the poker dealers keep their own...I know Casino Niagara and Fallsview don't... Tip pooling for table games (i.e blackjack, craps, etc...) is standard for most of the country (California and Arizona being the big exceptions). However, I would venture to guess that poker dealers keep their own in 3 or 4 out of every 5 pokerrooms in the USA.

Xhad 07-17-2005 09:50 AM

Re: Anyone that doesnt tip the dealer?

OK, I have now read the rest of the thread and my reply doesn't make much sense. I would personally still tip even though tips are pooled, simply because I would rather reward the bad dealers than punish the good ones.

dicelumpY2005 07-17-2005 09:56 AM

Re: Anyone that doesnt tip the dealer?

I admit..the pooled toke system does suck, which is one of the major reasons I switched to poker. I still toke when playing blackjack/poker, or whatever when they are pooled. I will go out of my way, however, to let the great dealers know what a shame it is for them to have to split the tokes with everyone else... For the bad dealers, I just won't tip... I'm not going to be a jerk about it, and let them know I'm purposely not tipping... I just hope they take the hint and clean their act up. (highly doubtful)

Re: Anyone that doesnt tip the dealer?

I live in Oshawa, It's close to Toronto.
The two closest Casinos for me are the Great BLue Heron Casino in Port Perry ( and trust me there isn't anything great about it) and Casino Ramma in Orillia.

Port Perry is a 20 minute drive and Ramma is an Hour and A half.

If there was ever a dirtiest Casino ever award The Great Blue Heron would win it hands down. The place is filthy, and the tables are filthy. It is also the only Casino I have ever been to where they regularly run out of small chips.

I can't rememeber how many times I have been asked or seen others asked to grab either $1 chips for the poker tables from the roullette wheel or .50 & .25 from the slot people so they can pay the commisions on the Pai Gow Poker tables.

I have had the Pitboss keep running totals on myself and several other players several times on how much they owe me because they don't have enough small change to give back when they pay commisions. Rinse and repeat for an hour or two until they finaly get around to getting the security guards to give em chips.

For this reason I drive the extra hour and go to ramma and don;t go to Port Perry anymore

Re: Anyone that doesnt tip the dealer?

I think you are right on the money, even if tips are pooled, the physical act of them dropping the toke is positive reinforcement. The lack of a tip also sends a message even if it doesn't make much of a financial impact.

I tip much better at Belterra, Tunica and anywhere the dealers keep their own tips. It is very rare for me not to tip a buck. I tip even the worse dealers on the planet as long as they have a good attitude and are trying to do right. I won't tip an ass. If a dealer is an ass, He is out of luck because there is no excuse for that.

Yeah, "Let 'em eat cake".

Good idea, I am going to stop tipping everywhere - Restaurants, bars, the whole shooting match.

Wished I'd thought of this before. I could have had an in ground swimming pool with all the tips I would have saved. I could be sitting back, drinking pina coladas by the pool with all the savings.

Think I'll stop giving anything to anybody. No birthday gifts, Christmas gifts, even cards. And forget about flowers to the dead sons-of-bitches in the coffins. What would they need flowers for?

Come to think of it, I am not even going to go to wakes anymore. I could be making money online playing poker with my time. Yeah, not even giving my time to anyone anymore. Time is money.

Man, you are on to something.

Fxxx everyone.

Just got back from quick trip to local casino. Stiffed the dealer every pot I won. Worked out well. One dealer gave me some lip. So, I gave him a “Sup bro?”, kicked him in the nuts and said, “LImitPlayer and RJT don’t toke no more.”

I was on such a high , I went out and stole a Piaget watch. Then I bolted on a haircut and a massage.

Re: Anyone that doesnt tip the dealer?

there's nothing wrong with this line of thinking. I tip, but far less than most players. I play 1500-2000 hours a year, and all those tips add up to a very large number. I only tip a small number of dealers, and I don't tip them for every pot. that keeps my expenses down.

the chips belong to you, and you can do what you want with them. these guys who are calling you names and trying to make you feel guilty about not tipping are fools. let them throw their money away while you are counting yours.

Tipping is not throwing your money away. A lot of people in service jobs rely on tips as a significant portion of their income. Do you not tip waitresses, pizza delivery guys, and bellboys?

You may think you are "smart" for not tipping but in reality you are just cheap. Well done. Way to be cheap.

Re: Anyone that doesnt tip the dealer?

Tipping a buck a pot is just a built in cost of the game in the exact same nature the rake is. The only reason they don't make it a fixed amount like the rake is to give the option to people who want to make larger than standard tips.

Don't be a douchebag. Good dealers are becoming harder and harder to come by, and if people stop tipping them they are going to have less and less motivation to do a quality job.

Re: Anyone that doesnt tip the dealer?

Let me give you a story on why should you tip --

First of all, I tip because it's the right thing to do, I don't expect anything in return, but if this isn't enough ...

Was playing the other night, and won a pot pre-flop (didn't tip because it was <10). The very next hand, I won a second pot pre-flop, so I flipped the dealer a chip and told him that I didn't get him last hand. Dealer smiled and said, 'yeah, the last one was small'.

A minute or two later, the dealer told me about a poker rate that I was unaware of, and that would save me $40 on my bill, if I spoke to the desk before midnight.

Long and the short of it -- if being a mensch isn't enough, do the right thing because maybe he dealer can help you

I also tip floor people and the board girls. Not often, and not a lot, but enough that I sometimes hear about especially good tables. Tipping can be way +EV.
