That font looks like it was ripped from a 70s era computer manual.

you need to use that picture you use for the onlinie mag.

I think your back cover is suffering from a bad case of grocers apostrophe .

Surely it's 'hows and whys', not 'how's and why's'?

Absolutely hate the back. It this... It that... plus the text is rolling over the picture is awful. You guys need a serious layout artist. I'm still buying it, though.

Re: No Limit Hold \'em: Theory and Practice Cover

Wow! That looks only vaguely like the last two slugs I have sitting here of the cover.

I'm very disappointed this is what it is going to look like.

I mean its your guys book and all, but the full jacket he submitted was butchered.

EDIT: Since I sit here stunned looking at this, and seeing the negative comments. And I know Mark will not defend himself, because he respects these guys and the books so much. What is being printed is not what it was supposed to look like. I would rather not piss off these guys more so I will refrain from posting the actual way the thing was supposed to look like.

Having read your words in another thread, then seeing the pics, I thought: what the heck - that was it? I'd like to see that earlier version. I suppose somebody likes green.

But it's all subjective taste. What do you guys think is the best poker book cover at the market?

It's funny, isn't it. I initially hated the standard 2+2 guns and cards covers, but now, because I associate the covers with the content, I associate that tacky 1950's western style with quality.

From a pure design point of view though, I'd probably have to go with Phil Gordon's Little Green Book.

And as for worst design ever: Pot Limit & No Limit Poker by Reuben and Ciaffone.

Re: No Limit Hold \'em: Theory and Practice Cover

I don't know... I hate those cards on LGB, that lining is ugly and the red on back cover doesn't fit. The font is ok. But I love the hard cover. Would be better with glued cover instead of separate paper, though.

I can't remember any really great cover in poker books, but the best I have is probably Inside The Poker Mind. If only the drawing wasn't so naive.

Easy way to make NLHTAPC much better: change the colour to blue, and make it shift slowly from darker at the bottom to lighter at the top. And change the font. Maybe it's not too late.

In the immortal words of Simon Cowell, "Absolutely dreadful".

Good thing we were all taught not to judge a book by it's cover.

This jumped out at me too, although I'm not sure it's grocer's apostrophe. Some American style manuals recommend (or at least permit) using an apostrophe to avoid confusion when forming unusual plurals, e.g., "Mind your p's and q's."

Maybe whoever wrote the jacket copy didn't want people standing in the poker section at Barnes and Noble going "'Haus and whiss?' What the hell are 'Haus and whiss?'"

I like Helvetica Black. Helvetica is an icon of Swiss typographic design.

The problem is that today, our vision has been polluted by Arial

According to the Purdue Online Writing Lab

The apostrophe has three uses:

1) to form possessives of nouns
2) to show the omission of letters
3) to indicate certain plurals of lowercase letters.

p's and q's would fall into the latter category. It seems that it's unnecessary in the case of Ps and Qs.

But then you Americans do all manner of peculiar things to the English language, so who knows?

I like it. None of the books I own are green.

Red, yellow, tan, blue, dark blue, red, pink, darker blue...

this works.

Re: No Limit Hold \'em: Theory and Practice Cover

green is fine by me.

I actually like the front-cover decently.
Not super-duper fantastic, but better than the previous 2+2 pistol covers.

As for best poker-book covers (as was asked in this thread), my favorite cover by far is that for Weighing the Odds in NL Hold-Em by King Yao. I think that is just a terrific cover.

The apostrophes on the back-cover look pretty bad imo and I'm surprised nobody caught that sooner.

I wrote the back cover copy, and I had this debate with myself, and I decided that the apostrophes were good because I didn't want any confusion. I suppose I am a sinner.

P.S. I also use "they" as a singular neuter pronoun in many places throughout the book. I think it's a progressive, yet natural, solution to our pronoun gender problem. Gird yourself.

He didn't get any photos from the photo shoot. The photos are for QE continuity, promotion, and ALL IN magazine spread.

Also, the show airs on June 20th at 10pm. During the filming of the show, we pretended the book was already out because when people view it, it will be.

Re: No Limit Hold \'em: Theory and Practice Cover

Hi Ed,
I don't think it is so much a matter of what you did wrong but what you could have done better. As far as the back cover I would suggest you buy Dan Poynter's self publishing manual and look through some of his recommendations of how best to utilize your back cover; it might get you to think from a marketing point of view more so than a poker player's point of view. Hope this is helpful. No doubt you will sell many copies just on the reputation of 2+2 but the b+m bookstore crowd might need a bit more convincing and your back cover can really help them with a decision.

Hi Jimi:

All our back covers on all our books are very similar. That's because this is what they have evolved to and after many years we believe this is the best back cover for us.

Best wishes,
Mason

Re: No Limit Hold \'em: Theory and Practice Cover

Hi Ruffneck:

I'm not sure who you are or what you relationship to the cover designer is, but Mark (who is the cover designer) did work with us reshooting the cover. There were some issues that caused us to make some changes to what Mark originally designed, but the cover you see is what Mark sent us and what we felt we could go with. The only difference is that the design on the chips was dropped in by us.

We happen to think that this is a terrific cover and that it will be well received in the stores. But it is also a departure from some of the covers that we have done in the past. It's our experience that some of the other publishers out there do copy what we produce, and this has included our covers. We'll see if that happens again with this one.

Best wishes,
Mason

Re: No Limit Hold \'em: Theory and Practice Cover

I really like the picture on the front and the prose on the back. However, I honestly don't think that that is a very attractive shade of green behind it all and it really hurts the whole thing for me. But colors don't always look the same on a computer monitor as they do printed on a book, so maybe once I actually have the book it will work.

Hi Bobby:

Ed made this post from a color proof we received from the printer. It's our experience after the books are UV coated that the colors will look somewhat darker.

I think we should call this the Big Green Book. Just a slight shade off of the LGB which will make them look nice together on the bookshelf for all you Queer Eye women complaining about color tone.

This cover is terrible.

Compared to covers of other poker books it may be slightly above average. But this cover seems like something that practically anybody could have come up with.

Here are some good covers IMO:

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/15...V53590416_.jpg
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/15...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/18...CLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Obviously I am buying the book for reasons that have nothing to do with the cover so this is not a big issue for me. If anything perhaps I prefer a lessor quality cover as maybe players who are 'not in the know' will pick up a worse book with a better cover. (I am sure the $29.95 price tag will also help) But it does seem that in this day and age 2+2 could have done MUCH better.
