10 Album Reviews in 10 Days - #3 Neko Case
Intro/Review #1 Arctic Monkeys
Review #2 Destroyer Neko Case – Fox Confessor Brings the Flood If Helen of Troy was the face that launched a thousand ships, then in a modern day version Neko Case would be the voice that launched a thousand ships. For the non-believers out there, yes it really is that good, to the point where she could likely just make the album without any background music at all. One only need listen to the opening track “Margaret vs Pauline” to be hooked. It will leave you begging for more, unless you’re a complete metal-head. This album explores the ranges of musical genres from “Margaret vs Pauline” where you’ll think you’re listening to a sexy voice rising up above a smoky lounge, to the sounds of a gospel spiritual in “John Saw that Number”, to the folkish beats of “Star Witness”, to the alt-country/power-popness of “Hold On, Hold On”. Case’s songwriting ability shows up throughout each song. The more gospel type song of “John Saw that Number” does feel a little bit out of place though. The one flaw of the album is that it starts on such a high with the first three songs, “Margaret vs Pauline”, “Star Witness”, and “Hold On, Hold On”, but fails to hold up throughout the entire album. The remaining songs just can’t match the power and emotion put into the opening trio of the album. It’s a shame that Case will likely never experience the widespread acclaim she deserves, but this album is definitely worth a listen, especially if you’re into a more folkish vocally driven type of music. I’d currently rank it as one of the best releases of the year, but I don’t feel it’s quite at the level that it would garner that type of recognition in a stronger year. It’s an outstanding solo effort, but, and I may be biased in this, I still feel that her voice and talents are best suited for the type of music and band environment that she has going as part of the New Pornographers. Rating: 8.1/10 Scale 1 – Please destroy all copies of this album so that I don’t have to ever go through listening to this again 2 – Lacks anything good to say about it, but at least it doesn’t put me in pain to hear it 3 – Shows some bright signs, but overall lacks enough good content 4 – A below average entry, lacks uniqueness and relistenability 5 – Average, entertaining at times, but overall nothing special 6 – Slightly Above Average, entertaining with decent relistenability 7 – Above Average, very entertaining 8 – Great Overall Album 9 – One of the Year’s best, Nearing all time Great Status 10 – An Absolutely Perfect Album in every way Tomorrow: The Knife - Silent Shout |

Been totally diggin' her on Sirius 26. Here is a NSFW pic of her. Not the most flattering as she is better looking than this. At least there is a little nip action, though.

I love her in New Pornographers. Solo album I'd give about a 6, but I do like it. How would you compare it to Jenny Lewis' album?
DarkForce - I listen to Sirius 26 all the time. Plenty of good music there. |

My Jenny Lewis vs Neko Case in a small hat analysis:
JL has better songwriting, Neko has a more powerful, unique voice. http://www.rilokiley.net/gallery/alb.../022105_09.jpg Both are hot. |

How would you compare it to Jenny Lewis' album? [/ QUOTE ] I like them both...Neko a little more, maybe...I also like Cat Power...another cutie-pie singer-songwriter. http://www.hi.is/~peturv/catpower.jpg |

Good point Georgia. Jenny L has some freaky song lyrics.
Dom, I never gave Cat Power much of a listen until The Greatest came out. I'm kinda liking it. What's her best album? |

Shockingly hip station for this otherwise stodgy, conservative Dutch town. Give it a listen sometime- it hosts a mix of stuff akin to Sirius 24 and 26 combined. |

From what I have heard so far, Neko is the "hot, dirty [censored] type" and Jenny is the "fall in love with her and get your heart broken while watching her detox/relapse and leave you for the umpteenth time" type. http://www.mintrecs.com/media/nekoca...romo_thumb.jpg http://www.liveaustinmusic.com/Graphics/NekoCase2.jpg Neko http://team-love.com/bands/jenny/images/00500009.jpg Jenny http://www.chordmagazine.com/images/...wis_img_01.jpg |

That is one good looking sundae.

I really like her voice. (I'd [censored] her voice too, if I could) I don't like many women's voices either. I think you rate the album a little too high though. I'd give it a 7.

[/ QUOTE ] I only know The Greatest, as well...but I'm looking to give her others a chance now... [/ QUOTE ] RE: Cat Power...Heheh, well the greatest is a very unique album for her...she made a real concerted effort to make a more upbeat pop record...her past stuff is really moody and messy and shambling...like Mazzy Star on heroin. Her live shows are pretty nuts...this wikipedia entry sums it up well: [ QUOTE ] Chan has garnered notoriety for her live shows, which often feature a chaotic lack of polish and structure. Songs are frequently cut short for no apparent reason, or "tail off" into what sounds like an extended period of guitar tuning. [/ QUOTE ] Some people consider her the world's shyest performer. Some think the mumbling and abrupt leaving is an act of deconstructionist performance art. Many think both are probable... Anyway, Moonpix is stellar album...but don't expect the same sunny country-soul vibe of Greatest...it's very minimal and stark and bleak and synonyms. |

Just listened to this album earlier today, pretty thoroughly agree with your review. Slightly disappointed that I get no props for telling you to listen to her solo stuff though. I even sent you Blacklisted, dude. |

A week after buying this CD I can't stop listening to it. Her singing is remarkable. One of the few times I've thought of someone's singing as the use of an interpretive instrument in popular music.

[/ QUOTE ] I have only a vague idea of what this means. Could you provide a definition or example? Also, any specific song? I'd like to hear it again. I love her voice. |
