10 Album Reviews in 10 Days - #2 Destroyer
Intro/Review #1 Arctic Monkeys
Destroyer – Destroyer’s Rubies Destroyer is led by the unique and almost haunting at times voice of Dan Bejar, also of the New Pornographers. Their latest album, Destroyer’s Rubies, offers a mix of slow rock, with a few more upbeat tracks, topped off with the witty lyrics of Bejar. For an example, you need look no further than the song “A Dangerous Woman Up to a Point”, where you’ll find the line, “Have I told you lately that I love you? Did I fail to mention there’s a sword hanging above? And those who love Zeppelin, will soon betray Floyd” The slower rock songs almost slow down to the level of jam band at times, such as the song “Sick Priest Learns to Live Forever”. However, the real standouts of this album are the songs where Destroyer kicks up the beat a little in songs like “In Your Blood” and “3000 Flowers”. The lighter rock songs of this album are good, but these songs stick out from the rest so greatly it makes you wish that Destroyer would have included a few more of this type of song in the album to balance things out more equally. Despite this, Destroyer’s Rubies is an album you will find endlessly spinning through your playlist. It’s catchy at times, witty at others, but overall brilliant. It is without a doubt one of the best albums of the year, so far. Rating: 8.8/10 Scale 1 – Please destroy all copies of this album so that I don’t have to ever go through listening to this again 2 – Lacks anything good to say about it, but at least it doesn’t put me in pain to hear it 3 – Shows some bright signs, but overall lacks enough good content 4 – A below average entry, lacks uniqueness and relistenability 5 – Average, entertaining at times, but overall nothing special 6 – Slightly Above Average, entertaining with decent relistenability 7 – Above Average, very entertaining 8 – Great Overall Album 9 – One of the Year’s best, Nearing all time Great Status 10 – An Absolutely Perfect Album in every way Tomorrow: Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood |

i really like this album...as far from the New Pornographers you could imagine and still love them both!

Re: 10 Album Reviews in 10 Days - #2 Destroyer
I enjoyed the album, but not nearly as much as Your Blues. Nothing on Rubies really grabbed me quite as much as It's Gonna Take an Airplane or The Music Lovers.

[/ QUOTE ] Yeah, I think I like Your Blues more. Also, I just listened to the Maritime album and recommend it to anyone who likes Indie Rock. If you guys want a review proper, I'll bang one out and post it in this thread. |

MEbenhoe,
Could you give some well-known examples of albums you would give various ratings so that we can better grasp your standards. What popular albums would score 4, 6, 8, or 10? |

I was expecting a KISS album review.

[/ QUOTE ] The two most recent examples I can think of that would come close to a 10 are the New Pornographers - Twin Cinema and the go team - thunder, lightning, strike. Stars - Set Yourself on Fire and the two System of a Down albums from last year would be 8 range. Gorillaz - Demon Days and Audioslave - Out of Exile would both be around 7. 6 range would be albums such as the Arctic Monkeys one from yesterday, Foo Fighters - In Your Honor, and Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyze (as much as i love that album, i'd have to honestly put it there). 4 range and below is tough to think of off the top of my head, but i hope that helped a little. |
Re: 10 Album Reviews in 10 Days - #2 Destroyer
I pretty much agree with your review.
My favorite track on Rubies is European Oils. I LOVE when that guitar riff kicks in at 1:57. Gives me chills every time. Looking forward to tomorrow's review. Fox Confessor Brings the Flood is my favorite of the year so far. |

I will check out Twin Cinema, and Destroyer. I'm pretty sure I won't like Destroyer at all though, based on your description. |

I was expecting a KISS album review. [/ QUOTE ] Me too. Destroyer was one of their better ones though. Starting off with the classic Detroit Rock City which has one of the baddest lines in music when the character in the song knows he is going to die and says, "I got to laugh, cause I know I'm gonna die." Then King of the Night Time World which is great, then the classic God of Thunder, Shout it Out Loud, Beth, Do You Love Me....One of the best Kiss albums if not the best. It's so sad they didn't keep doing stuff like this and descended into the hell of the Unmasked cd just a few short years later... |

Re: 10 Album Reviews in 10 Days - #2 Destroyer
Okay, I'm listening to this now. The first song is absolutely horrible, pretty much because of his lyrics and singing. EDIT: No, the whole song is complete crap.
Sounds very contrived, pretentious, fake. Who puts a 9 minute song at the start of an album? Okay, Zeppelin did. Alright, who puts a crappy 9 minute song at the start of an album? These guys do. They need to work on presentation. THE SINGER HAS GOT TO GO! Anyways, that's all for my review. I give it a 3 of 10. Bad. WAIT: YOU GAVE THIS AN 8? joke. |

Now did you actually listen to any of the album beyond the 1st song? and if so did you just have your mindset so much that you were gonna rip on it that you didnt give it a chance? If neither of these are true, well then maybe it's just not your type of music, or you were expecting something different? I guess we'll just have to disagree on this one. |

[/ QUOTE ] I finished the album. I don't like the way he sings, mostly because his lyrics do not mesh well with the rhythm of the song. His voice isn't horrible or anything. There are several instances where he starts jamming words in, and it ruins the rhythm. That is at least one thing I remember. I also don't like his lyrics, but lyrics aren't really that important to me anyways. |

Anyways, I did like Neko and New Pornographers (a lot), so I'm not just indiscriminately bashing everything you like. What else would I like if I like the above two performers? |

It's actually funny that you like the New Pornographers. Numbers like "Jackie Dressed in Cobras" was performed by... dun dun dun, Destroyer.
Didn't you like Pretty Girls Make Graves? They have a new album. PS: I don't mind Zep, but they get too caught up in their own [censored] sometimes. |

[/ QUOTE ] yeah Jack, already hit on this, but the lead singer of Destroyer is also a New Pornographers member. He's written and been the lead on the songs "Jackie, Dressed in Cobras", "Broken Breads", and "Streets of Fire" from Twin Cinema. And a few songs off of each of their other two albums, which if you havent heard yet btw, I highly recommend getting Electric Version and Mass Romantic. |
Re: 10 Album Reviews in 10 Days - #2 Destroyer
also AC Newman to get the trifecta.

I'm pretty sure it went through and someone deleted it??? I don't know, maybe not. I was going to say I like the singing on the song you mentioned that was written by him. It doesn't break up the rhythm like some songs on the Destroyer album. I also checked the wiki page for The NP, and it seems like that one guy (Carl?) writes most of the music. I don't think The NP are anything like Destroyer. For one thing, NP's songs have good rhythm/drumming, something I think Destroyer lacks. NP have much better melodies/riffs as well. So you can't catch me in a contradiction like you were hoping. Also, I will check out the Pretty Girls Make Graves. I'll let you know if I like it. I'm guessing you don't like the epic songs. |
Re: 10 Album Reviews in 10 Days - #2 Destroyer
Carl "AC" Newman writes most of the stuff, yeah. He's got a solo album, look for it, it's under the name "A.C." Newman.
