Favorite Sports Announcer

With the retirement of Keith Jackson from ABC Sports, I thought about all of the different announcers that are famous from different sports…

The two ‘most famous’ I believe are Keith Jackson and John Madden.

Obviously you have several other’s that you might notice depending on your sports…

Walton in Basketball (not because he is good but well… he talks a lot)
Harry Carry for the Cubs

WPT
Vince Van Patten and Mike Sexton

Any other ones that people like?

Vin Scully
Kevin Harlan
Al Michaels
Chris Collinsworth
John Miller/ Joe Morgan

the worst:
Bill Walton
Steve Lyons
Tim McCarver
Theisman/ McGuire/ Patrick
Chick Hearn when he was alive

Also, we've had similar discussions in the sports-events forum.

But I'm all for repeats on this topic.

Bob Miller, L.A. Kings (it baffles me why OLN would pick the crappy Ducks announcers to work out of market playoff games instead of Bob)
He's better than Vin. (and I've listened to Vin a lot)

For national, I'll go with Al Michaels.

And the guy who hated on Chick SSCKH.

Vin Scully was obviously the name that came to mind instantly upon reading the thread title. I GUESS you could mention some other names (all MN kids love them some John Gordon) but yeah, its Scully.

Re: Favorite Sports Announcer

About time he retired. Keith Jackson has been horrible for 10+ years. Everyone says hes so 'classic' or whatever, hes just old, boring, uncreative, and partially retarded.

My vote is for Harry Carry. He sure was old and partially retarded, but he was definitely not boring or uncreative.

New/Current Favorite: Troy Aikman. Obvs. very knowledable about the game, but hes also articulate and humorous.

I love how all the Harry Caray lovers can't even spell his name correctly, as well as Cris Collinsworth...

Some off the top of my head:

Marv Albert (jokes aside, the best in the biz)
Ernie Harwell
Pat Summerall
Bud Collins
Don Cherry (you either love him or hate him)

I think Bill Walton may be wholly responsible for me hating basketball. I'm not sure if Morgan truly compares.

John Madden when hes on his game.

Tim Mc Sell Out should be drowned in his own piss.

Dan Dierdorf needs to go announce for the cardinals instead of the Jets

Re: Favorite Sports Announcer

Al Michaels is insanely good. I mean, I've heard him call just about every sport and he does them all perfectly. I was too young (7) to watch/appreciate the 1980 Olympics upset, but it appears it's his calling card. Plus carrying that dead weight Dan Deirdorf through all those MNF seasons must be worth something...

Pat Summerall. When I was in my backyard simulating huge comebacks, it was his voice that was narrating. The guy's droll voice takes me back to NFC East matchups circa 1988. Cowboys-Redskins. Giants-Eagles. I was even excited when ESPN dusted him off for a few games a couple of years ago.

Verne Lundquist. Here's an extremely underrated announcer with some serious range. He'll call the entire NCAA tourney in March and then a week later be somberly sitting on the 16th at the Masters. Plus he does a great job on the NFL. That's a pretty hard trifecta to pull off, folks.

Also, yeah to the Vin Scully votes. We didn't have an MLB franchise here (Phoenix) growing up, so we listened to Dodger games. That man is brilliant, and is also supposed to be a helluva guy.

There is Harry Kalas, and then there is everyone else.

The Harry Caray fans like the Will Ferrell portrayal more than they liked Caray. Besides, Caray was a well-documented douchebag.

Good call on Johnny Miller. He is good in general, but the fact that he is despised by half of the PGA tour means he is doing something right.

Kevin Harlan is definately my favorite. It was so awesome when he just did local broadcasts for the T-Wolves but everyone knew it wasn't going to last...

I'm one of the few people who actually really likes Madden.

Jon Miller is very good. He deserves a mention here.

Also, it's not everyone's cup of tea, but Darrell Waltrip does an awesome job as a NASCAR analyst.

Three retired guys not mentioned yet - Jack Buck (may his son die a horrible death and get the [censored] of my TV), Ernie Harwell and Danny Gallivan

Madden is a shadow of his former self as was Keith Jackson. I like McCord and Ferhety's schtick but as has been mentioned numerous times above it is Vin Scully and everyone else.

Re: Favorite Sports Announcer

My favorite is Mike Roberts, voice of the UNM Lobos. He's been doing Lobo games forever, and it's always a pleasure to hear his voice...he's also a good play-by-play caller. When the Lobos are away, everyone in Albuquerque watches the game on mute and turns on the radio just for Roberts.

Don't really have anything to add for national scene announcers. Cris Collinsworth gets no respect from anyone he works with, which is a shame.
