I don't know why people think this. Gracie will lose by a decision but there is no way he gets knocked out or submits. Gracie has fought many guys who are way stronger than Hughes.

His last few fights have been against joke opponents and he looked terrible. This won't get past the first round. I guarantee it.

Not that it matters, but is Gracie allowed to wear the gi?

Re: UFC 61: Gracie v Hughes, whats your prediction

Gracie could get knocked out. Id say odds are against it. Its very unlikely Hughes submits Gracie. I think the most likely way for Hughes is by decision. On the other hand if Gracie is going to win, its obviously by submission. Hughes has shown some vulnerability to this and also I doubt Gracie has the game to outpoint Hughes on the judges cards.

If you want to do that you should check out a sports book. I think the line is something like 4-1 against a Gracie win. If you're right that would be a pretty decent payday. It's a horrible bet though. No way Gracie can win.

BCPVP,

None of the UFC fighters can wear gis anymore. Someone with more knowledge about the sport can chime in here, but its been shorts only for the past couple years, perhaps more.

Its not a rule put in specifically for this fight, or anything.

Historians wanna chime in as to why?

Like I said, it's probably because you can use it to choke people. So if the other guy isn't wearing a gi, he's at a disadvantage. That's how Royce beat Shamrock the first time, and he tried using an Ezekiel choke in their second fight, I believe. I remember reading (or watching) Royce explain why he wears the gi and part of it was that it soaks up some of the other guy's sweat and makes him a little easier to hang on to and part of it was that the other guy likes to grab it and if he's grabbing on to the gi, he's not punching Royce in the face. And then of course you can choke people with it.

In Gracie's case the gi is a definite advantage but not for everyone. Because you can get choked out with your own gi too. Everytime I roll with someone who wears a gi I'll first pull his gi over his face to disorient and disrupt breathing, then i'll try to use his collar to choke him out with his own gi.

Gracie is 2-1-2 in the last decade. His 2 wins are against opponents with a combined record of 2-9-2.

I think it's a reasonable assumption that Hughes is not technical enough to pull off a gi choke on a bjj black belt.

I'm not sure...I never thought much of Hughes' ground game, except ground n pound, especially considering when he made that horrible rookie mistake against BJ Penn and got choked out. But when I saw his single motion super fast arm-bar on St. Pierre I was very very impressed. St. Pierre is pretty good on the ground and didn't even see it coming.

I think he probably was surprised that Hughes pulled it off too, but gi chokes are stuff you've got to train and I doubt Hughes does much training against people with gi's. Royce is like a 6th or 7th degree black belt. I think he can probably defend against an attempted gi choke.

I feel weird defending Royce since I'm not real big fans of that family. Too many of them have chips on their shoulder and think they're so badass.

krimson 05-05-2006 03:46 PM

Re: UFC 61: Gracie v Hughes, whats your prediction

I think Hughes by decision in a reasonably slow/boring fight. Hughes won't want to go to the ground, and Gracie will be trying to keep the distance close to not get hit. End result, lots of slow clinches of Gracie trying to take down a top-level wrestler.

Re: UFC 61: Gracie v Hughes, whats your prediction

I think this might be similar to the diego/diaz fight where the stronger fighter is on top and clearly dominant through out the fight, but the guy on the bottom is too technically proficient to actually get submitted or knocked out. Thus it goes to a decisioin.

gusmahler 05-05-2006 03:53 PM

Re: UFC 61: Gracie v Hughes, whats your prediction

Hughes will win. But it's not as one sided as people think. Gracie will never submit to anything (the Gracies can take a lot of pain. Remember Renzo getting his elbow dislocated and not even noticing? Or Royler getting his arm wrapped all around him and not submitting? Or Helio getting his arm broken and not submitting? Or even Royce preferring getting choked out to submitting (against Wallid)?) And he has a pretty good chin. Hughes by decision.

Re: UFC 61: Gracie v Hughes, whats your prediction

You all have to remember that this match is a business decision. It is not for a title, it is strictly for promotion and to bring back older fans of the UFC. It is also a chance to showcase some of the biggest names from UFC in a sold out Staples Center. This is a promotional fight.

Now I'm not saying Gracie took this match and plans to lose, but I think he is terribly outmatched at this point in his career. He has not beaten a top notch opponent in a long while and Hughes has faced some of the best MMA fighters in a time where MMA is bigger than it ever has been. UFC wins this fight no matter what, and Hughes' hand will be raised in the main event, most likely in the 1st round. I think White would like to see it go longer, but they do have a huge undercard so the length of the main event may not be so important.

Easy win for Hughes and afterwards people will wonder how they let poor Royce back so early to fight the champ. But for now thwy will hype to death.

I think Gracie is going to apply a submission hold. Choke him out. Help him up. Send him home.

Re: UFC 61: Gracie v Hughes, whats your prediction

For another sports analogy.. all I can think of is imagine Kobe playing Jordan in 1 on 1 today. It's nice to think Jordan has a chance because we all have great memories of him in his prime, but think about Jordan's last few years. Was not the same player.. could still do some things, but it wasn't the same. Kobe wins 9 out of 10 times maybe even more. How many people would want to see this on PPV though?

I'm starting that thread (Jordan v Kobe) in Sports now... so don't try to steal it!

This is true. I still think its going to be interesting for serious fans, but obviously the huge loser in this charade is GSP. He has definitely had enough fights since his loss to Hughs for a rematch to be inorder. He really shouldn't have to wait this long. I assume its the next fight after Hughs/Gracie, but still.

Personally, I think that the UFC has invested so much money into marketing Hughs as the champion, that they want him to win as many fights as they can get away with before they have to risk him losing the belt.

a) gracie gets a bad cut

or

b) gracie refuses to tap and is either chocked out or breaks something
