Tournament of Champions - WSOP

Is this the first airing? I couldn't find any threads about the ESPN telecast. I think it has been extremely entertaining - probably the best show they've done yet. Some great actual poker shown too - Matusow owning Hellmuth is always great TV.

It has been very entertaining indeed. Not a big deal, but I thought I'd point out another Norm Chad error. He said Hoyt beat Phil heads-up for the WPT title. Phil went out third, and Hoyt beat Ibrahim heads up.

Definitly entertaining watching a fat, balding, degenerate gambler keep yelling "one-time, one-time". Im speaking of Matusow, the guy is a work of art. lol.

I thought Matusow's needling was excellent. Dannenman calling hellmuth a punk was pretty unexpected, but very funny.

Angelic_Ace 12-24-2005 05:07 PM

Re: Tournament of Champions?

Matusow was awesome - I thought a lot of his barbs towards Phil were dead-on, which makes them all the more amusing.
Mike took advantage of the tight atmosphere at the tourney, it seemed like there was a point where he noticed how scared everyone was playing, and realized he should switch gears to 'crazy and loose Mike'. Phil played pretty well, but he did exude weakness. He would 'have a read', but be unwilling to stake his chips on it, and both his bluff vs. Hoyle and his 10 8 all in vs. Hoyle, he was giving off very weak vibes - as Mike said 'you were begging for a call'.

Yea, this was the first airing. Good point about Chad's error, I realized it too. He probably doesn't know much about poker outside the WSOP. Anyway, I thought this show was very entertaining.

Some of the funniest quotes ever are from this episode. Matusow is my hero

Matusow, Hellmuth and Dannenman = GREAT TV poker!

just add a J.R. Bellande and a similar personality and you've got another winner!

Re: Tournament of Champions?

Once again Hellmuth is only entertaining when he has other people trashing him. Phil without a foil is just sad, as his insults are unoriginal and forced.

But when he has Mike and Steve to make him look like a fool, it is a grand day even with ESPN taking Mike quotes out of context to try and ruin it.

Another time they gave a guy a checkmark for the best hand on the turn - but the other guy all-in had a one out straight flush draw.

(Chan I think, with his 88, against a higher pair.)

They both had a flush, the other guy w/a higher flush.

It was KK v 88, both with a heart. The board was QhJhTh with another low heart, so the 9 of hearts gave both the Kh and 8h a straight flush, and obviously the Kh has the winning straight flush in that instance. Therefore 88 had no outs after the turn.

Dannenman- weak-tight with the AQ fold?

I forget the exact scenario, but I think Steve D limped behind Phil with AQo, after Phil open-raised and then folded to the Mouth's smallish reraise.

If you weren't going to call that size reraise fror Mr Gamble, why did you limp rather than raise in the first place, Mr D?

Pretty you've got it wrong.

I think it was like this:

Phil raised 4x blind with 10Js. Steve cold-called behind w/ AQo. Mouth raised in the blind w/K10. (don't remember the amount)

Phil folds 'cuz hes worried about Steve.
Steve wimps and folds.

A wimp fold - but not an awful fold. You have to hammer it or fold IMO. So not too bad a of a play.

He gave the mouth credit for a pretty legit hand since Mike was re-raising OOP against a tight raiser and a tight caller.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, 9 bracelets only equals 9 "world championships" in Hellmuth's fevered brain, and while this may be totally results-oriented, I'd say Hellmuth was the one who got owned in this tournament. Matusow's comment about Hellmuth's style being out-dated was pretty spot-on as well. Doyle Brunson has adapted to changing times and styles better then Hellmuth has.

Look at the way Phil was whining after it was over. "They didn't play right!" If you can't adapt to someone else's style to beat them Phil, then you got out-played.

Best televised final table I've seen.

Jaksiel 12-25-2005 12:42 PM

Re: Tournament of Champions?

Matusow whines as much as Hellmuth and just doesn't get called on it. How many times have we heard "I never win a coin flip!" How many times have we heard "One time! Just one time!"

Easy E 12-25-2005 01:10 PM

Re: Dannenman- weak-tight with the AQ fold?

Both parts are why I didn't like the play.

Why limp behind Phil and invite others in? And Mike M has been known to push a hand or two, especially when Phil is involved. With Mike behind you, you have to consider your actions based on Mike's possible moves BEFORE you decide to limp in early position.

I didn't like it, and not just because Steve's hand was best.

there was one scene where Matusow looked at his cards, saw AA, then said raise in the Dark.

Is that legal? or is that considered cheating? and if caught, could he be disqualified?
