[ QUOTE ] Office Space, I think it says alot about humanity and our place in modern society, etc. Even though it might not even mean to. [/ QUOTE ] [/ QUOTE ] The beginning of Office Space had some of the best social commentary I've ever seen in a fictional movie. |

Bang the Drum Slowly, an older movie *about* baseball.

i was going to post that OOT was the only place on the planet you could get Napolean Dynamite compared to Saving Private Ryan. Well, Saving Private Ryan is good for about an hour and a half, and then it becomes a terrible parody of actual war. Speilberg has a problem with final acts. He's so good, and then he just kinda fumbles as he crosses the finish line. There are about 4 exceptions. [/ QUOTE ] Thanks you for the encouragement in your earlier post. You are right about Spielberg, except you give Saving Private Ryan too much credit. It pretty much sucks from beginning to end, from the jerky camera that I guess is supposed to make you feel like you're in the war (but actually just makes it impossible to know what's going on), to the sudden appearance of Becker in the middle of war torn Europe, to the long stupid debates about whether it is worth killing 5 people to save 1. (quick answer: it is not.) there was a great article on this in Vanity Fear 10 years ago or so; can't find it right now, busy at work. |

Falling Down? [/ QUOTE ]Again, this is the opposite. In what way did that movie seem shallow on the surface? I mean, wasn't it clearly trying to be a social commentary the whole time? Again, though, if you think about it, it said nothing. That whole movie is ruined by the fact that he beats up the Nazi guy - well, it would have been a bad movie anyway, but that scene proved that the producers/writers/directors had no courage or vision. And it was directed by Joel Schumacher - director of Batman and Robin, simply and objectively the worst movie ever; a movie so bad that all of his movies should be shunned in every way possible from now on. i need to stop reading this thread.... |

Also check out GWAR - Phallus in Wonderland. Seriously. But you have to be beyond baked to get it. I would add Boogie Nights to the list too. |
Re: Deep movies that seem shallow on the surface.
[ QUOTE ]
Napolean Dynamite struck me as a movie that had "deeply intellectual" pretensions but that was, once you thought about it, quite stupid. Sort of like "Saving Private Ryan." [/ QUOTE ] I have never, ever, seen a convincing argument as for why Napolean Dynamite is an intellectual movie. I thought it was pretty stupid and borderline racist. |

GWAR - Phallus in Wonderland [/ QUOTE ] I wouldn't call it deep, but yeah, great movie. Needs chemical enhancement. I wish I had seen them live. raisins |

Yeah, but the satire's the only enjoyable thing about it. |
Re: Deep movies that seem shallow on the surface.
Being there (forget who said it) is a fantastic choice, but when I hear this, I think "Election." On repeat viewings, you realize that w/ Alexander Payne, you are in the presence of a genius who really understands the nuances of comedy and realism like few American directors. If you don't believe me, watch the director's commentary. It's very clear this guy knows what he's doing (as he would show with later films).

I'll second Election. Very good, very subtle dark comedy.

Re: Deep movies that seem shallow on the surface.
Hmm...I'll go with White Men Can't Jump. Sure it's entertaining on a shallow level because of the great chemistry and dialogue between Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes, but there are also a lot of poignant moments regarding Harrelson's pride, his gambling problem, and the end of his relationship. I thought the bittersweet ending and the closing scene were very well done.

When Woodie asks Wesley Snipes how many meals his kids had to skip so he could wear his jewelry, it was a damn good knock. Woodie nailed Snipes really good with a few criticisms. |
