I drink tap water all the time in nyc as it's very good, but tap water at my parents is disgusting (very hard). lots of coastal places like outer banks have nasty water also, the taste is a lot different.

2. Yellow water is not bad for you usually, it just means you got a little rust in a pipe you hadn't used for a while.

[/ QUOTE ]
Who the [censored] uses a faucet so seldom the pipes start to rust, then decides to fill a bottle with water from the faucet, and THEN decides to drink the water when it comes out discolored?

[/ QUOTE ]

This threw me too. I use my taps at least 99 days out of a hundred, and almost certainly more. Those pipes are not unused, ever.

And anything yellow I am sure as hell not drinking.

I buy distilled water for my fish and plants. If that runs out I drink tap water. Tastes a little worse but you get used to it.

I get bottled water when I'm out somewhere. I never drink soft drinks so if I'm thirsty it's either a smoothie a juice or a bottle of water. They're selling convenience, it's not the product itself.

It'd be interesting to know how much more a soft drinks company have to spend on filling the bottles, over whatever processes bottled water goes through.

I only drink tap water, paying for bottled water just irks me. I also live in Truckee and we have some of the best tap water in the country...but even when I visit other places, tap water is good enough for me.

bottled water simply tastes much better, depending on where you are. some places have very good tasting tap water, and i can imagine people from those places not being able to understand the sale of bottled water, but in some places the tap water is really disgusting.

OP –

Tell you what, move to New Orleans for a few years and drink the tap water. We’ll see what you think of bottled water then.

The first week I bought my house, I received a letter from the local water company stating it was required by the EPA to provide notice to all residents of a “high fecal content” in the tap water. Luckily the water department assured me that this is the same water its residents have been consuming for years.

Good times. Thank God I got the out of that hole.

The tap water here in Socal isn't that bad, i'll drink it. My gf won't, so we buy alot of bottled water. I've always preferred the taste of FIJI. I don't see how people can say it doesn't taste different. When I lived in AZ I drank only bottled water. The tap was pretty terrible there.

Re: People who buy bottled water are fish at life.

Memphis has some of the best water in the country out of the tap. I still don't like the taste of it so I have a Brita Filter but I don't see the problem with buying bottle water. I occasionally drink from the tap at my church through the water fountains but there is still a different taste. If you don't like it you don't have to deal with it. I wouldn't recommend buying Fiji water or whatever, but the local brand is probally good enough. Honestly, one of my jobs is to run a system that makes ultra pure water (US Pharmacopia Water). The tap water is around 150 microsiemens (measurement of conductivity) and has chlorine, etc. After using a reverse osmosis system our water is .7 microsiemens. So there is still a bunch of "bad" stuff in the tap water (it's really not that bad). You can notice it, water from the tap isn't that pure. I've tasted my purified water and it's probally too pure. It's actually not that good for you since it'll pull nutrients right from your body.

A couple more things:

1. Tap water has extra GOOD things in it, such as fluoride.

[/ QUOTE ]

Really?

[ QUOTE ]
In San Diego, is fluoride added to the water supply?
The City of San Diego currently does not add fluoride to the water supply. The State of California requires that water agencies serving more than 10,000 customers fluoridate their drinking water supplies if outside funding is provided. Presently, the City of San Diego has not received outside funding, therefore does not fluoridate the drinking water. The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (the largest wholesaler of San Diego's imported water) has elected to begin fluoridating their drinking water supplies by October 2007.

I see you've been in my fridge, you little bastard. Probably stealing my Dasani, eh? Yeah, I thought so.

How you can possibly compare central Iowa tap water with Dasani is beyond me. I think I pay, what, $.25 a bottle on sale? Well worth it. Tap water sucks.

[/ QUOTE ]

I drink so much water in the average day that even at a quarter a bottle it would add up at the end of the month. It's not that the money would break me or anything, I just hate the idea of blowing 100$+ a month on something I'm content with spending 5.

i have a poland spring water cooler in my apartment because it's baller. hot and cold water in an instant, and i don't care what anybody says, that ish tastes way better than NYC tap water.

besides, if the turrrists decide to poison the water supply i'm in good shape.

the biggest problem i have with bottled water is how wasteful it is to use those plastic containers for it. but when you have a water cooler they get re-used by the company, so it's all good.

if anyone is wondering we get like 20 gallons / month plus the cooler for 30 bucks. i think it's an awesome deal because i don't have to brew tea or coffee anymore, either.

[/ QUOTE ]

Hearing someone say the water in NY is bad is VERY surprising to me. Have you had water outside of New York? The NY water is so good one former mayor (maybe Giuliani) considered bottling it and selling it. I lived in Philly for the past year, and I could NOT drink that water without the glass being full of ice. Ended up with 2 filters, one for the faucet, and one for the pitcher.

Here on Long Island though the tap water is awesome...In NYC, most people consider it the best. I've actually yet to go to a place that has good tap water aside from the NY area. Only place was Lake Powell, in...Nevada I think. I was at Vegas, spent about a week there, and all I could get was crap water, so when I hit lake Powell, it was delicious.

In Houston, they actually did sell tap water from bottles. The agency that makes water down there just took their normal supply, put it in jugs and slapped a "City of Houston" label on it. I got the impression that they were leveling all of us, but the water was available in stores.

Bottled water is a joke to people who know what they're talking about.

Worst tap water I've ever had is in Nevada. I stopped ordering any beverage that wasn't pre-bottled there. Fountain soda even tastes like crap because of the water.

There was one restaurant in Laughlin I went to that would give you free bottled water because the tap water sucked so bad. They could have filtered the water, but I guess they wanted the appearance of clean water.
