i was listening to the radio earlier today and the discussion of brian sabean came up. the radio host is very high on sabean, claiming that the giants have enjoyed lots of success under his regime as GM.
ORLY?
I can think of a million things that sabean's done wrong, like signing a bunch of dinosaurs to long term deals, totally ignoring draft picks and trading away prospects.
and this success that they've had? the giants have been very lucky to have barry bonds carry them for the past decade and sabean has been disguising barry's success as the giants success. when barry is done with baseball, the giants are going to be in trouble (if they're not there already)

i'm a dodgers fan, so this is tough for me to say but...
i think he's done a fine job.
i think he did this:
like signing a bunch of dinosaurs to long term deals, totally ignoring draft picks and trading away prospects.
because of this:
the giants have been very lucky to have barry bonds carry them for the past decade and sabean has been disguising barry's success as the giants success. when barry is done with baseball, the giants are going to be in trouble

I'm always surprised by how positive the Bay Area sports media is about Sabean, Beane, and Art Shell. They all get much tougher coverage in other markets.

The best part about Sabean is that he's had to utter the phrase "I am not an idiot" in public.

totally ignoring draft picks
this is incorrect. he intentionally gives away first round draft picks by signing free agents who will cost them their pick. at least he has a plan, even if it is way off base.

Sabean has done what he's needed to do. His legacy will be cemented after Bonds retires...if he's even given a chance.

This was of course after he trade Matt Williams for Jeff Kent and Julian Tavarez, so he was right in that case.
I think he's done a fine job. You really only have one thing to base his performance on and that is success of the team, which has been pretty good. I'll agree he does make some poor decisions in the FA market but nothing that has been devastating. Aside from the AJ/Nathan trade, his moves in the trade market have been pretty good. The only other player he's traded away that made any significant impact was Foulke. This includes trades that at the time included highly thought of prospects (Grilli, Bump, Ainsworth, etc.) Also, he's done pretty good at finding quality bullpen arms cheaply over the years (Eyre, Worrell, F. Rodriguez to name a few). Overall, is he the best GM? No, but he is far better than the average.

Sabean has had a reasonably good track record in playing veteran hunches. He got two useful seasons out of Marquis Grissom, a couple of decent years from Benito Santiago, some very good numbers from Ellis Burks. Jason Schmidt and Jeff Kent have to be considered major successes. Even last year, Moises Alou was much better than anyone expected, and Randy Winn had 250 excellent at bats for them.
The Giants' payrolls have not been especially high during this period.
Has he been lucky? Quite possibly. Did he make a mistake by surrounding Bonds (and Kent) with spare parts, even if those turned out to be relatively useful spare parts? Almost certainly. Building a dynasty is very hard and very expensive under normal circumstances. It's much easier when you have a 15-win player on your team.
But, Sabean has mostly succeeded in what he's set out to do, and that's more than you can say for most GM's.
