I was just looking at the Lenovo/IBM website.
The ThinkPad Advanced Dock is supposed to have:
One full-height and half-length or low profile PCI Express Card*

So, the trick would be to find a PCI-Express card that would fit into the slot and handle the Dell monitor.
And, of course, get an IBM/Lenovo laptop. Unfortunately, all the links to the laptops on the website seem to be down

I believe that several laptops have dual link DVI ports, but just can't support the high resolution. And, looking at NVidia's website, I don't see anything indicating that they are making high res laptop video cards.

Bump. Does anyone know how to mod a laptop to achieve 2560x1600 external resolution?

Do a search for Clevo m570ru. I think it's the only non-mac laptop that can drive 30 inchers at full res.

ABS Mayhem Z5 seems to
http://www.abs.com/app/config.asp?mono=1957
Anything with the newest ATI Mobility or GeForce will work. You want the GeForce 7950 or the ATI 2600 XT or X1600.
(warning : there's some weird numbering stuff going on with ATI's offerings; the 1600 seems to be dual DVI, but lots of the numbers in between are not, and then the 2600 is the big daddy at the moment)
IMHO ATI is better than NVidia but YMMV.
